How to Wire a Telecaster 4 Way Switch

The Telecaster 4 Way Switch offer a powerful tone upgrade to a regular Telecaster, adding an extra position to your tone arsenal. With the switch in position 4 the pickups are wired in series, resulting in a full and fat tone. A series circuit feeds the signal of one pickup into the other, doubling up the signal which results in a boost-like quality to your Tele's guitar sound. The rest of the positions work the same as a regular Telecaster.

I was just considering doing this very mod to my Telecaster,following wiring diagrams has never been my strongest point so this video was a revelation ! thank you ! i just have to get the same 4 way switch as you so it all goes together the same as yours. Thanks again

I have just completed this modification on my Squier CVC and fitted the 'Vintage' wires. That 4th position gives a great extra sound. I have cosidered doing the modification to my Japanese '52 reissue, but chickened out, as I have just fitted Fender Vintage pickups, and don't want to mess about with them. This guitar comes with small pots and a cheapo switch. I am upgrading with parts from Northwest Guitars. Great value and service.

Just did this mod on a tele style guitar with P90s. All I had to do was flip the pickguard and replace the switch, wiring it as instructed in this video. P90s already have a seperate ground so it worked out fine. This is a very good tutorial.

I did the 4 way switch modification. It adds an great feature for little cost and little effort. I recommend it for any Tele player.

What does it do ? Is there any ex. of the 4 way Tele wiring sound? I just changed my pickguard on my Tele in the process the Neck pups went dead? I think maybe I may have broken one or both leads to the pickup?!?!?!. Have you ever had this or any suggestions i.e. vids dealing w/this it issue it's a "Boutique 52 Tele neck" pup chrome covered. Thanks for any help.

Cool , thx ! Why don't you solder the ground of the jack to the back of the volume pot, rather than to the back of the tone pot ? And, isn't it important to wire the bridge to the ground as well ?

We solder the ground to the tone pot on this particular mod just because the wiring diagram says to do it that way. We've found that if we try to ground it to the volume pot it doesn't work correctly. It's not usually necessary to wire the bridge to the ground as the bridge pickup in a tele usually has a brass plate on the bottom, which is then connected to the bridge by the mounting screws, therefore grounding the whole thing.

So if you neck pickup does NOT have a metal cover, you do not need to mod? And if it does have a metal cover, after severing the one connection, they all 3 wires go to the same place on the pick up? Thanks.

Great video. Thanks for making it. I noticed there’s a difference in the video you wire the cap to the 3rd volume lug, which is not shown in the schematic. Is there a reason or difference? I’m asking because after wiring according to this video I’m only getting sound when the volume pot is maxed out. Any advice?

On my T-Style I use a 4-way, but the 4-way gives me both PUs in series, so I added a push/pull-pot for added out-of-phase. So this wiring will be different. Actually, with the one I use, I have 6 different sounds, out-of-phase on parallel and serial switching of bot PUs.

Question. I'm kind of new to soldering. At 8:30 when you're wiring those two wires to the contact, do the wires need to by physically touching each other before you solder them? Or do they just need to be touching the same contact?

This is great! One question, though: Do you know the alternate wiring for: 1) BRIDGE, 2) B/N/Parallel, 3) B/N/Series, 4) NECK? Any idea where I might find a chart? Thanks again for this video, you make it look easy!

Where exactly does the ground wire go to on the bridge? Been looking everywhere and can't find any info on bridge grounding.

Nicholas Noble hopefully you’ve sorted this by now, but usually it will just be pinched between the bridge and body. Make sure some bare wire is showing, of course.

Hi, I was looking at buying this 4-way tele switch kit from you guys on ebay, but was wondering if you could tell me whether this wiring would work with 4-conductor tele pickups such as the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails for neck and bridge. Your wiring diagram and the one found on Seymour Duncans web page (www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=tele_2h_4ws) seem to be near identical other than the way in which you ground the bridge and the capacitor. Any help would be great, thank you.

Can someone help me here ? I wired a 4 way switcch into a telecaster. I wired it the same as standard 4 way mod. Although I used a P90 in the neck. And wired it as if a standard single coil. The P90 has braided cable. I soldered the braid to the appropriate lug on the switch and continued the hot to the appropriate lug. There is no metal cover so didnt earth that. The problem I have is that the bridge plate is noisy. There is no hum. Not so much thats not the problem. Its that I fingerpick and all I hear is my nails constantly banging the bridge and its annoying as hell. I even broke the connection on the back of the bridge pickup plate and wired a seperate wire to ground. Nothing makes a difference. Poor guitar is in pieces on my table and I am thinking to rewire to standard. But I love this humbucker type sound which is the point of doing this mod !?

Man, I did step by step but got no satisfactory result, when I select the pickup position, only got the neck and bridge. Already checked all circuit a million times and is identical, not so good because I'm a beginner.
