I'm glad you just came out and said Kickstarter is not a viable pathway. The documentary Game Master featured Exploding Kittens and even as the most successful kickstarter of all time, they said it didn't make them rich, it just helped them start a business because of the costs to produce all the games, pay Kickstarter's cut, ship them all out, etc.

Yes from everything I’ve read about and researched about self publishing, it is A LOT of work with very minimal potential financial gain. People actually usually end up losing money :( That’s why I only pitch my games now.

@@PamWallsGameDesign Ive been a publisher for about 6 years now. Currently sitting around negative 70k over that time. While the ceiling of being a self-publisher or a publisher in general, has a higher ceiling that being a game designer does, its also ALOT more work and ALOT more risk. Both supporting yourself though design or publishing is a monumental task. Similar to video games and most creative jobs, its a hit driven business, the hits make a LOT of money and then the 99% of all other games either dont make enough to have made that project really worth it, or lose money.

Thank you for sharing your experience! You are 1000% right, there definitely is potential to make it big, but yeah like a 1% chance like you said. But we can get so focused on that carrot just out of our reach… I know my chances of being able to support myself pitching games to publishers full time is very small, but at least I know I won’t LOSE a ton of money, like I could if I self published. I’m sorry you’ve incurred those losses, but hopefully you can recoup them soon. Thanks again for watching and sharing your story!

@@PamWallsGameDesign Honestly its probably closer to a 0.1% chance 😅 There are close to 26k publishers listed on BGG, and probably less than 100 that are actually sustainable businesses for longer than 10 years and actually have employees and such.

As a small publisher I agree that self publishing is not a viable way to become a full time designer largely because if you do make money as a publisher most of it will be from selling games - not designing games.

This is great! We need more transparency like this if we have any hope to change the industry.

This was an AMAZING video! I already joined the facebook group and wrote a note down to talk to my financial advisor about “financial independence” Every new thing I learn is one step closer to running my own game development studio :)

I’m glad this was helpful for you! And be sure to get info from impartial sources about financial independence since it’s not in most financial advisors’ interest for their clients to understand it……. Best of luck on your board game design journey! 💪 🤗

Great vid! I am personally moving country to make a full-time freelance career more viable - cost of living is lower in Thailand than UK (or USA). I find it interesting how you ranked them in terms of 'difficulty'. I get that there are some general truths, but I do wonder if there is a lot of projection going on. Personally, I only tried making videos for 3 years (and did a hundred internet radio shows before that) but I found growing that audience MUCH harder than self publishing.

Hi Bez! 👋 Nice to see you over here :) Thanks for watching and best of luck with the move. I think it’s super smart moving somewhere with a lower cost of living. And yes, this list is definitely based off my experience and research and I’m sure it’d be different for others. That’s why I made sure to say “in my opinion” - definitely not fact! I’m super excited about this next chapter for you Bez!! 🤗

Another great video. Thanks for putting the effort in to share what you've learned thus far. Amazing link to the Cdn For Fee IFA, super helpful for me living in Ontario.

Thanks for watching! And yes I met with an advisor from that list (Anita Bruinsma) and was very happy with her advice and guidance.

I considered applying for a game design position at a pretty big board game company that I happen to live close to. However, after reading reviews of former employees, it was a common trend to read that working there killed their enjoyment of playing games as a hobby. One more thing to consider if you go that route, though the consistent paycheck is very appealing haha

Yes! That is another reason I don’t think I could work at a board game company as my day job… I agree that it might take some of the fun out of it and I might even get sick of board games for my day job and my side hustle. But yes at the end of the day being able to pay your bills is nice 😅
