Someone had well & truly butchered those carbs long b4 you set eyes on it. You did an amazing job fixing someone elses mistakes - well done. What a fantastic job

I just don't understand how can anyone neglect such a beautiful motorcycle and they were not cheap when they were new either!

Nice job dude. I am doing some of this right now on a 2000. Same problems. Been sitting for years. Carbs all gummed up so any little tip, trick, magic, is welcome. I got pods on mine. It ran great 3 years ago, but it was in storage and the gas looks like pancake syrup. Stinks too. Hopefully I just clean it all really good. The jets are correct so I am crossing my fingers.

My 1st gear is slipping out after adjusting some parts. Might be a transmission issue 🤦‍♂️

Sounds like you got it tuned pretty good. Nice job.

You should have never tried to start it with old gas in it. Had you drained the old gas first and added fresh you might have been ok-maybe. But trying to start it with old gas ? Not smart

Wrong. The bike was ridden to my house by the owner, who had been running it prior to that as well. The issues were not bad gas related. Whoever messed with those carbs before me had them adjusted wrong. Float valves were replaced, petcock rebuilt, new bowl gaskets, a new slide on the driver's side carb, can't remember what else. But no, I didn't do anything stupid and doing what you suggested would have yielded zero benefit. Thanks for watching!

Would be the first time ever that it ran as it should

You definitely know what you are doing. I am currently in the same boat. I bought a 2004 Yama v-star 1100 classic. It was sitting for a couple of years as well. I have taken the motorcycle to two different mechanics and the bike is still running bad. The second guy that worked on the bike got it running better but it backfires a lot. Recently, the bike lost power and I can’t find a local mechanic that knows carburetors. Now that I saw your video I have an understanding of what needs to be done. I don’t know where you Reside but I wish you could fix my motorcycle lol. Thanks for uploading that video. I might try to work on the carbs myself.

Shops are a rip-off with these older bikes. I have a friend with the same bike, similar situation. He took it to a shop and paid about $2500. All in, parts and labor, the owner of this bike paid $550. I've since helped that friend repair that bike twice. One starter clutch and another carb rebuild because turned out the shop didn't replace float needles. Best of luck with your bike! I highly recommend ultrasonic cleaning, the harbor freight one I bought paid for itself in an afternoon.

Watch out for the tiny o ring on the bottom of the carbs when you put the bowl back on.

Hopefully, you could help me with my 03 Yamaha XVS 1100 custom. Trying to bring it back to life & out of hibernation. Not long ago I had the carbs rebuilt&jetted. I’ve now found that I get no action on the throttle body. I will be replacing thr throttle cables but the throttle body will not budge. What can I do to loosen it up? Thanks

They are CV carbs, so the throttle is controlled by a butterfly valve at the carb opening. It is linked between the 2 carbs so if it isn't moving there is something stuck in that linkage. I would take the carbs out and find out what's holding it up. A few bits of caution here: Passenger side on the end of that linkage is a throttle position sensor, this is set from the factory and hard to recalibrate so I would highly recommend not moving it in your troubleshooting if possible. The carb sync adjustment is at the bottom of that linkage. Carbs should be resynchronized any time they're worked on but try not to move that adjustment screw too much or you'll have more to do when synchronizing. With the cables removed you're unable to rotate the throttle at the carbs "drivers" side?

A friend of mine with the same bike had his throttle push cable go bad, we removed it so that his throttle would close when released using the pressure from the return spring at the carbs. Just a thought, perhaps they are backwards at the carbs?

Cable routing is critical on those bikes.
