About to take on my first 50 gal. water heater job. Perfect video for beginners that have some handyman experience. I liked the thinking out loud, no filter, just doing what you do! Thanks Steven.
My tank just started leaking yesterday after 17 years. What a blessing. I say blessing because 17 years is great I think. Guess I have something to do this morning. Thanks for the video!!
I know it's a small detail, but the white tape on the wrap is a good idea. Home owners are always worried about how something looks, and the white tape made the wrap look clean. Nice job, and thanks for posting.
Love your videos. I am not a plumber however am a certified Cross Connection Backflow prevention Surveyor through New England Water Works. I always have a Master Plumber with me during surveys. I really like the AVB on the water heater, nice extra step.
If you ever get a pair of Knipex cobra pliers and you'll throw that pipe wrench in the trash. I would've never believed the grip they get before using them. Worth the $30. Grip like a pipe wrench, work better than channel locks for those situations as well, compact and pocket carry light, work in tight spaces, jaws open super super wide for pliers, made of high grade tempered steel, thin handles also help in tight areas, can't say enough about them. I use them for everything but I'm mostly into auto mechanics but they're actually a pipe tool. Thanks for the video!
Excellent video Steve. You are a superb teacher and that is hard to come by. Keep up the good work! Honestly I would work for free with you to learn your trade.
in my state you are encouraged to use flex lines and vacuum breakers are only if your water heater is at the highest point and if you do for some reason hard pipe it, there must be a union. Each state has different rules and regulations. but this is still a great video. I like watching Steve videos when I'm sitting around doing nothing. I know my state laws but it's fun learning other states laws.
Beautiful solder joints! All in all this was a very educational video, I like your tricks ("....... that's the way i do it ") I'll be watching this again.
I'm doing one tomorrow. Very good teaching video. Nice tips on soldering too. LIke the other guy said, I like you talk thru what you are doing. Enjoyed this one. Learn a few things too.
Very nice job! I would have run PEX but then again I don't think my soldering skills equal yours. I would have no doubt had a burn on my arm or hand the way you were reaching around the pipes. LOVE the way the T&P would drain into the HVAC- ha! Hope it never blows. Again- Very nice job!!
Thank you ever so much for all of your insights! You have helped me so much with all of these nice videos you have been putting together! Thank you, Steve. You're absolutely awesome!
T&N Services LLC. the old tank was wrapped and the owner wanted this one wrapped also .. i agree i do believe its a waste of time .mass save program goes around and does this to save energy they say .
I changed alot of them through years in different houses. Sometimes draining is time consuming as limestone builds at the bottom of the tank. I fitted a portable air tank with a hose and adapters, so I plug it on top of the hot water tank on the hot and cap the cold. Provides good pressure and drains up in record time.
That's existing heater looked like a Home Depot special install , Good job with the rrplacment and setting it up like it should of been done from the beginning.
I love how you are so knowledgeable and confident! (you don't care that solder drips in your tool box either, HA!Great video. I need to just dive right in and Do IT!! Thanks!
Good job, Steve. We have to put armaflex on lines here in Texas. And we can use flex copper connectors. If in garage has to on stand 18" with secondary pan..
Nice job! Thanks! Very nice the close ups for the soldering. I can see exactly how the solder needs to flow to do a good job. Excellent lighting. Good camera work.
Thank, you for your VIDEO! The plummer is coming to replace my water heater soon. The water heater made a big pop. Then the the hot water stopped. My Plummer is also my furnace man too. I put in heat pumps and did service work in the late 70's. But I am to busy now to take on this project. The cost of a 50 gallon electric water heater install $750. A O Smith brand. It seems that water heaters are breaking soon after installing it. A O Smith won't honor their warranty. Could you tell me what kind of water heater to get ? Then. Shawn
Great video. The only thing I'd do different is solder lower joint first. Just the way I was taught since heat rises. Otherwise when doing upper joints first you risk that joint losing its seal while soldering the lower after it since heat rises. I notice you only did that with the pressure relief elbow.
I had trouble understanding what you said about the galvanized pipe on the top of the old tank, were you saying galvanized pipe is not legal in your state?
starting at frame 15:10 i noticed the blue plastic cold water tank plug still in tank inlet. Then you applied the pipe dope and the 3/4 tank tee was install. ?? did I miss something.
Harry Dickson i am not a big fan of wrapping the water heaters she wanted it reinstalled ,like the old tank ...so i reinstalled the duct wrap for her .i myself think its a waste of time
I was wondering about that cause I haven't seen you wrap any of the other water heater you installed in your Videos! Getting ready to watch your vlog now
Good video!! I installed a new electric water heater the same way as my old one was (properly) I don't get any hot water at all but I pull the flush valve and there is hot water, I noticed my cold input line to the water hater is hot? Do yiu know why is that happening?
why do you need an 8 inch probe t&p on top? isnt that only required when you have to run it through a tee or other fitting so the temp probe will extend into the tank?
How does you water heater code not require a pan under the heater? Especially inside next to a floor air register? We require them even in a garage install. Also an expansion tank.
Nice explanation, at first I thought this looked like a gas heater due to all the connections. I was trying to see about getting the air out from the hot water side. The tank has been in over a year and still the kitchen sink faucet bounces when the hot water side is selected..The item in the middle of the tank...does that not have anything to do with purging??? Thanks
Top notch install! Never seen the vacuum breaker or longer T&P being used here in WI, but I think were behind on a lot of things code wise lol. Man those flex lines are a joke. Even worse are the braided SS ones. Sweat in is the only way!
Excellent job Steven Soldering away from dialectical nipples preventing damage to plastic liner - check Tidy soldering - check Tidy routing of plumbing -check Local codes observed - check T&P piped neatly to floor - check Bled tank - check The blanket will give minimal insulation benefit as E.F is an every decreasing spiraling return for each inch of insulation. However, most water heater companies are going to 3" insulation standard for NAECA 3 (2015) Drain pan?
I thoroughly enjoyed this video, Steve. The additional comments made an ordinary video much more interesting and I plan on applying your techniques to my upcoming project with the replacement of two hot water tanks. May I ask which city and state was the hot water tank replaced in your video?
Awesome video. I have some questions: 1. I have a broken 40 gallon electric water heater I want to replace with an 80 gallon heater. Is that doable? The new heater will be about 10" taller than the old one. 2. Well, not really a question but, I would love any tips you could offer for someone who is doing this for the first time and really just getting into the DIY thing.
Steve is there anything to shot the main water off (like a solenoid valve) if there is a major water heater leak or a pressure sensor so the house does not get flooded.
Sr.Diaz, an aluminium pan that drains to outside is the code requirement if the tank is in an area where leakage may be destructive. Pans are sold at hardware stores.
Yeah there is a flex capacitor in the fuckin GARAGE THAT ISNT THE HOUSE THATS ON CONCRETE WITHOUT A FUCK DRAINFUCKPAN! SO YEAH WERE ALL GONNA DIE CAUSE HE SWEATME LONG TIME!!
it looks like the pressure relief valve is close to the duct register. So if it blows its going in the direction of that floor grille. Was there a drain near by in that room?
+Jonathan Pabon no drain,,, lets use the register for a drain what do you thing i am all for it lol ..who really gives a fuck . really ,its a relief valve .probley will never go off in 20 years get a grip man
+steven lavimoniere : Hahaha, you guys from the east coast crack me up with your tell-it-like-it-is, no BS demeanor. Hilarious comments while doing the job. Really enjoyed this video, very informative for me. I'm trying to save a few bucks installing a water heater for the first time. Thanks
Steve you are a cool guy My uncle was a plumber so I know the deal lol I love the Why do ya wear gloves lol The food ya cook guy when can I move in? Real good food ya cook Keep on.KEPPING ON .. EVER IN Vermont LOOK ME UP
Asking for a pro opinion, should you use tape or pipe dope or nothing at all on the inlets if you are using flex piping directly to it that have grommets?
+Justin Frias i never use flex pipe,,,,,,,, and if you do and they have rubber inserts thats all you need , i always pipe my stuff off with ridged copper pipe , i use both pipe dope and teflon on copper threaded fittings
So, I saw what I thought were plastic debris caps on the hot and cold threaded connectors on the tank. I was wondering why you didn't remove them before putting your pipes on. I guess they were some sort of valve?
nice job man. :) i need a new electric water heater to. i would like to do it myself to save some money. but i've never done that kind work before . so its time to learn how..lol :)
Does soldiering real close to a ball valve ever melt the plastic bushing inside the valve the ball rotates on? What if a home has pex for water line? Should the heater have so many foot of copper before the pex connection to the hot water side?
Why did you face the relief drain pipe towards an airconditiong register? I didn’t see a pan underneath the heater either, it would have made more sense to shunt the water to a drain rather than on the floor in a room. I’m hoping there was a drain in the floor or that register was the drain
Can I use you video for personal use. I bought same 40 gallon electric heater for my duplex in a foreign country amd instead of their conventional method of installing bits of heater all over the house I want to have just one central heating system for the entire building.
At the 15:01 mark in the video you add the "T" and valve to the heater but it looks like there is a plastic plug still in the pipe. Does that not have to be removed prior to installation of the fitting?
Hey Steve, I'm a new subscriber and I'm hooked on your videos🙂 I was wondering did you ever use dielectric connectors on the water tanks to help prevent corrosion? The water tank manufacturers say to use them but I've never seen them used. Also how close can you safely solder fittings to the water tank without ruining the plastic in the inlet and outlet pipes? Thanks again for the great vids 👍
Never seen a vacuum breaker on a water heater anywhere in Canada. Flexible copper like that in conjunction with tank straps is only common in areas that experience intense earthquakes.
If you have extra insulation on the outside it does help. To check all you have to do is open the tape and slide your hand inside next to the heater. You will feel the heat being saved.
Nothing beats proper hard copper lines and sweat joints. All others are inferior in every way and are only preferred by rookies and communist states Ike California.
Excellent Job on the water heater Steve very important information on T & P . Have you installed any pressure tanks on with check valve over the water heaters? Are there any videos i'm missing. Thanks >>
+rmwaseem we do not use ex tanks up were i live because the water meter does not have a check valve on them so the water will expand back into street piping ,if there was a check valve then i would have to put a ex tank in
That customer is wise about her $$$. I do the same thing with my WH, only turn it on when I need it. Otherwise it cycles on about every half hour..."For what?" I say. I can get up to two days out of it between heatings during the summer, one day in the middle of winter. Of course laundry and dishwasher will require turning it back on for a while. Definitely the HD special. If only they would be smart enough to not sell products that are not legal in the state which the store is located. But, that is what keeps folks employed, ripping the junk out!
