Yep, it's just 40 pounds to perfection; give or take a month or two. Our cattle grain finishing experiment continues, and today Hilarie and I have to pick up our pork at the butcher. This gives us plenty of meat in storage to last through the winter selling season. On the way to the butcher, I show some of the farms and fields in our area, and talk about what is grown and raised. I visit with the cattle and piglets, and check on Brownie the sow's pregnancy.
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours or accept visitors
-We do not sell from the farm
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

As a confirmed member of the "Old Farts Club", I couldn't agree more with your observation. It's sad for me to take a road trip on the state and county roads and see the remnants of formerly thriving little towns and each house (what're left of them) being different than the one next door. Stores closed up permanently make me sad. I remember the 5 and Dime stores and the 'emporiums' of the 40's and 50's with fond memories---I can still smell the uniqueness of their merchandise which was much better than the forced air perfumes of today's stores. Actually, the best was a trip into a big town and visiting a Sears with the pneumatic tubes to each cashier and the wooden floors----ahhh, great memories! Thanks for jogging this OF's memory button!

The banjo and drone shots are primo - keep it up! Pete, you are correct that modern music is homogenized, and that is largely governed by record exec behavior. Once market analytics became commonplace, studios started aiming for new music that sounded like existing successful tracks, and therefore innovation was stifled. For a renewed faith in humanity, check out your local music scene ("local" for you being all of the Northeast). New bluegrass, rock, folk, soul and punk music is being made by a lot of great bands.

When I was a kid, my mom would occasionally turn off the main road onto a red dirt road. It had 2 whee hills in a row -they were pretty steep. The brothers and I thought this was wonderful. She’d turn around and go back over them and back to the highway. Big thrills in South Georgia..

a cheap way to get a thrill without paying $$ at a carnival/fair!! Our family used to just get in the car and drive around in the country - stop at an old apple tree along the road and have a snack - that was back in the 50's - that time is long gone. People don't know what they are missing by not having a simple life.

At 57, I can already tell that if I live long enough, I'll probably end up a very grumpy old man cause as I age, everything is turning into one big cookie cutter. 100 years ago, we would have been complaining about how everybody is ordering a house out of the Sears catalog, and they all look the same. Kids these days buy entire BOXES of nails; Back in MY day we had to fire up the forge any time we wanted to put up a door. I'm also a proud member of the "Old Farts Club" but even I have to admit that there's some nuance to it.

Well Pete, I believe we're about the same age - 50 something. And yes, I'm with you on the view of 70's music being way better than the music of today. Interesting how you observe on the old family dairy operations - there are plenty of those former dairy farms in the hinterlands around Seattle. Now, they're not too far from suburbia - but back in the day, they were out in the middle of nowhere. They're easy to spot with the old barns and adjoining buildings and the now overgrown former pastures / corn fields / hay fields. There's still a dairy in Issaquah (an eastern suburb of Seattle) and every time I go by there, I see the double tanker trucks unloading the raw milk. Clearly from a bigger than a 30 cow operation. I'm looking forward to see how your experiment with grain finishing on the cows goes. Ditto the adjustments you're making on the pig feed amounts. If you find success in grain finishing the cows, would you ever consider growing a few acres of corn of your own to eliminate the need to purchase this input? Just think - a classic 1 or 2 row harvester to fix up could be in your future. I've seen one on Tractor Time with Tim. :-)

Hi Pete! Another great video, keep up the great work! I'd be careful about a wife who is great with a shovel...that can backfire on you if you say the wrong thing! All kidding aside, it's great to see the two of you enjoy yourself and life on the farm together. I think it builds strong relationships and it's something often missing from couples who spend most of their time apart because of hectic schedules. One quick point on what you mentioned about the butt roast and why it's called a butt roast. In colonial New England, butchers packed inexpensive cuts of meat into large barrels, called butts, for storage and transportation. The shoulder meat packed into these barrels became known as pork butt, and the name stuck. Just a bit of trivia for you Pete! Keep up the great work.

I always enjoy your insights to life. I would like to live, again, the way I did in Southwest Ohio in the 40' and 50'. I never knew anyone who carried any level of stress. The area was mostly farms and the fields were small. None of the buildings were new, nor the equipment. A farmer would have a car at least 25 years old, but it looked and ran great. Gas was cheap, at a "full service" station. Neighbors talked to each other. Kids all played well together. What was a "bully"? Some things you shouldn't let die.

One thought: your 'dramatic' videos are so delightful, have you thought of doing a bloopers reel? Or a drama/comedy starring the animals? I'm sure with your sense of humor and style it would be hilarious. A lot of work for you, I'm sure, but a lot of fun for us!
