Farming the Hard Way

I'm farming the hard way, and I'm proud of it! I have some fun watching the pigs playing with cardboard boxes, spend some time showing how to train a calf to approach me, paint some Farmall MD parts, go to visit Sammy the bottle-fed steer and other Dexter cattle, and joke around with Hilarie a bit. During all these things I have some things to talk about: the poor Fedex service I have received and why everything in our culture seems to be in a "race to the bottom," why efficiency in farming can be harmful and the benefits of farming the hard way, with more labor and less machinery, and how our society is trending toward instant gratification over craft and patience. Oh, and we are running out of hay!

I recently started watching your channel, and my father watches you all every week, and as a ups employee I agree with your assessment of the parcel industry. And its the entire industry that's going to crap. We use to sell a service, and the company heads have forgotten that. It's all about profit now, and it's made the industry suffer to the customer. It use to be an exciting thing to see the brown truck roll up, now you wonder what broken package you will have to send back this time. I really want to start a small farm soon maybe the next 2-3 years, but until then I will gladly enjoy watching and supporting Just a Few acres farm

Pete, I think your philosophy on work is born into farmers. You can work all season on a crop or animals for weather or sickness to sometimes ruin the end product. Farming is a hard process, if in some way you can't find joy in the hard work. The results are a bonus and blessing from God. GREAT VIDEO.

I enjoy hard work, always have, always will. I dont know that many people get that, but hearing you talk about society today running on instant gratification, makes me wonder, how many people understand that hard work makes the the fruits of your labour so much sweeter.

The string hangs his head and leaves. Just outside the bar the string has a brilliant idea. He He ruffles his ends and ties himself in knots. The string goes back in the bar and says "Bartender, I'd like a beer!" The bartender replies "hey aren't you that piece of string that I just threw out?" The string replies "No I'm afraid not!

Yeah, I find myself agreeing with you on all your points today. Although, I do think that we need to be able to tolerate a hybrid kind of life experience - some instant gratification, some artisanal experiences. I am hopeful when I see young people who are craftsmen, organic farmers, restoration specialists, etc. And then there is you, Pete - you are a throughline in the American agricultural experience, beyond the cacophony of factory farming. If you want hope - look at yourself. Old time farming with modern social media delivery. This is good stuff, man - keep the faith.

I think people want it cheaper because its so hard to make a living nowadays. I see 80/20 just regular ground beef for $5-9 lb, eggs $3.99 dozen. So hard to feed your family let alone buy other essentials. I once wanted to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving from a local farmer but it was $90 for a bird. Its nothing personal against local farmers but I can't afford it. While the heirloom tomatoes look lovely, I can't pay $5.99 lb at the farmers market when roma tomatoes are $0.68 lb at the big box store. Why is a bottle of water more expensive than a bottle of soda? Why is cereal upwards of $5 a box when those subsidies are so high?? Its not like companies care about people beyond their bottom lines. We are just the poor creatures they leech off of.
