One of the first trees to be planted back in 1980 when the nursery began 40 years ago - This gorgeous fruit tree is a fine example of Cauliflory.
Cauliflory is a botanical term referring to plants that flower and fruit from their main stems or woody trunks rather than from new growth and shoots.
Incredibly the Jaboticaba is in the Myrtaceae family - although this species is from South America it is related to the Eucalypts, Mealeuca's and Syzyigum genus that characterize the Australian landscape.

I have a 25 year old one in my yard. Sharing a few fruit with wildlife at the moment. It seems to fruit every time we get good rain, usually several times a year. A dry 2019 was a bit of a right off, but 2020 looks good for jaboticabas with a wet start up the east coast. A beautiful small tree, very hardy, doesn’t mind wet feet in my clay soil. The only “issue” is what to do with a bumper crop, these are abundant fruit producers at times.

Wow 3-4 crops a year! Thats amazing. We have a jaboticaba in Daintree but only get 1 crop a year. What can I do to get more?

You need to have seasonal change in the weather. Down south you get the main crops in spring and autum or the shoulder seasons im guessing that in the tropocs you only really have 2 seasons wet and dry and not much of a shift in weather to promote flowering

You can have them sweet, sour or both! Depends when you pick them I enjoy all 3, Sour, Sweet/Sour & Sweet. When they are fully ripe super sweet & complex delicious grape-like taste!

@Chapstick I agree, they are slow-growing I noticed watering them TONS in the warm seasons really supercharges them, my seedling fruited in 5 years.

The foliage looks a bit like my Ugni molinae, the Chilean guava, also from the Myrtaceae family although that flowers in a more typical way.
