I've been fishing for over 50 years, worked for a living, raised a family, all of it. The best time to fish during those years is when you can. Life does not often give you the opportunity to pick and chose when you go. Now that I'm retired and can go when I want, I go early and watch the sunrise and enjoy the day that's been given to me.

Heck yea well said. I started going early-early because of responsibilities of family and just life. I could get out before sunrise have a “full” day of fishing and be back home before 1pm. No harm no foul and I could still get all my chores done while not neglecting time with my wife and kids. I think doing that for all these years have kept me sane and a better version of me.

Very true. But on my home waters the barefoot skiers get out on their wake boats right about then. Because the other boats make it difficult later on. And the boat wake bite doesn't start until afternoon. As obnoxious as the barefoot guys are. They are more respectful of the rules and fishermen than jet skiers and the rest of the pleasure boats

I don't care what studies say. In my 40+ years of fishing, most of my biggest bass were caught either early morning or later in the day. Only time midday has been better, is ice fishing. That's just my personal experience.

I don't care what the study says either. Summer bass fishing is way better in morning and sunset. Everyone knows that. Anyone that says otherwise is to lazy to get up early and stay late. 2 exceptions is early in the year and late in fall where alot of better bites happen mid day. Another exception can vary of what kind of cover is dominant on an individual lake that majority of the anglers target. If its docks or Lilly pads, bull rushes, rice weeds, flipping mats...Everyone knows this bite gets better in the sun heat of the day..but I also have record days early in the mornings throwing out out some kind of cast and retrieve bait out in front of the cover before the bass go to there cover

No I won’t stop getting up early to fish. Fishing for me is more than just the “catch”. I do it for the full experience. I love to watch the sun come up over the water. The serenity of it all. Deer coming down to drink. The beaver and otters playing in the morning. I’m surprised Randy you’d use that on your thumbnail. You of all people I would think you’d understand. And yes I’m not an idiot. You are talking about the most productive time to fish. Most of the fish I catch are caught between 930 and 1130. But I can’t give up the feeling I get when I’m the first at the ramp and out there before first light.

it all depends on the light... as a scuba diver who has dove at night I can tell you the bass sleep at night... you can sneak up on them and pet them if you wanted... but put light into the darkness and fish activity can happen... like when you fish for crappy at night with lights... my experience for striped bass is they like to eat around 10 in the morning and around 3 in the afternoon.... the birds will show you the times...

I had a pivotal moment in the late 90s when it came to my understanding of time of day vs fishing. It was high noon and a thunderstorm was rolling in so we were getting our last casts into this little feeder creek before having to jet…I flipped my little popper into about a foot of water and this shadowy figure engulfed it. As I was fighting this fish, thunder started cracking alarmingly close and we were beginning to panic a bit. Long story short, I landed a 6 pound bass (my personal best at 12 years old), we parked our boat and ran back to the cottage in the torrential rain. That was a major turning point where I began to realize that all my best fish were caught during the day and toward sunset. It remains true to this day.

One idea i occasionally see on bass fishing videos is that bass do not have eyelids so "during the heat of the day" the bass go deep. Or at the least, they look for shade. Casting under docks or overhanging bushes during the day seem to be very productive.

Great Video as always, But I notice that you left out one thing, that is Pressure. being someone who fishes in the Northeast from shore and kayak mostly, I found that I would catch more fish earlier in the day on pressured lakes and Ponds than I would during the middle of the day. I found that my number of fish was less during the middle of the day, when most jet and water skiers were on the water, than those few hours just before sunrise and active on the water was minimum. I believe that bodies of waters that are less than 1000 acres with heavy water sport activities, are better fish earlier in the morning and late at night, rather than mid-day.

60 years ago, I had a trout fishing expedition planned with my grandfather, and I was anxious to get on the water early. I asked him if we would be getting on the water at 6:00am… He replied,”why do you want to wake up the fish?”

In the middle of summer I have the most success at the crack of dawn until about 10 am. Then it usually starts getting good again in late afternoon. I've had some great nights too in summer.

Back whenever I'd actually fish and have success I'd find the afternoon was good for me to catch bluegill and bass then about 10pm I'd get into the catfish and about 3AM the bass would move back in during the spring and summer season in NE Tennessee. Thanks

I’m a steelheader in Oregon. We gotta be on the river crazy early to get The spots first. I’m walking through coastal brush and an hours and a half before daylight with a red head lamp lol

I've fished for Northern Pike for over fifty years, I've caught thousands. I fish at all hours of the day but I've caught at least 75% of my biggest ones from sunrise to mid morning.

Around 2pm and just before sunset have consistently been the best times for bass fishing for me during the summer. Exception is when the grass mats start sinking back down just enough to run a light buzzbait over top, then I'll get some solid hits an hour or two after the sun has completely set.

I completely agree however I’d like to add there are specific times when the dinner bell is ringing. Here in Texas that’s typically early morning or in the late evening right before the sun if about to go down and about 30 minutes after it’s set. I just simply put it like this…there are windows when fish typically feed more than if your fishing at say 3pm. Sometimes fishing is great but sometimes you’re having to adjust your technique for reaction fishing inside of setting the lure in the shallows (3-6) feet

My great uncle use to fish topwater an hour or 2 before daylight and would be leaving the lake when guys were coming out !! And he had a stringer full during the depression!!

In spring\summer\early fall We put our boats in at 7:30 - 8pm and fish until about 1 or 2 am sometimes later depending on the bite. Got the lakes to ourselves as it gets dark and we catch way more bass than during the day.

I live in a mountainous area. When the wind blows, stay home, drink coffee. The bite will quit any time the wind gets up. It doesn't matter the time of day. Nightime is good if it's quiet. Daytime is good, if the prevailing wind stays under 5 mph. Not much else matters, they sulk when the wind blows.

Morning is best especially in the streams and rivers because you get to the holes before others fish them not necessarily because fish are feeding at that time. You definitely catch more fish if others have not hit that hole in the last few hours and usually mornings guarantee that.

Summer: 9am-1pm for trout in the high country. Later, just before sundown. Dawn patrol is WAY overrated. The mountain water has to warm up to get the insects moving. One stream I know of, forget about fishing before 10am! Perfect for a bit of a hike in the cool of the morning.

I bank fish a small lake that has several areas of weeds and moss. I fish before sunrise out in the open water. After sunrise, I start throwing weedless baits on and near the weeds and moss.

We used to go out at first light like 30 or 40 years ago and never really caught much. The only thing I like about it is being the first lure that they see we stopped doing that years ago.

Relax and go when you can , sometimes they just don't bite , people take fishing to seriously, then get mad when they can't catch any, enjoy life and don't stress it out , I'm old man now and still use zebco 202 my favorite you take the line off that came on it and put you some 6 pound line on it and it throws really far,

Morning shad spawn in July is fantastic. They seem to bite late into morning for me. Shad colored frogs in weed beds.👍

Early morning and you beat the crowds. I would fish a small lake in Florida from 1am and wouldn't start to catch fish until after 9am. No hula popper for me.

Summer mornings starting ant daylight are usually very productive for me and I also miss the lake traffic.
