Very Beautiful Rusty 17th Century Pocket Knife Restoration. This pocket knife lay underground for 400 years! This is a very nice old knife with graffiti on the handle. A knife with such a handle is very rare. This knife is called a Cossack knife and was popular in the 17th century. I decided to restore this knife and preserve the history. I removed the rust and preserved the metal. I hope you liked my restoration.

I normally like your restorations but now I have to say that it's pretty rare to find such a piece of metal with not much rust even being 400yo.

Sometimes less is more! You did a great job and did not take the restoration too far. Enjoy watching you work.

( Brazil )

Sometimes with things this old,rare, and historical it is best to NOT replace things, and to clean it up best as you can to preserve the value/integrity and history of the piece. It isn't always about making it shiny and new. With things like this too much diminishes the value.

First your job is good for restoration part. You keep the metal intact is ot was But now first this is not a 400 year old folding knife. 400 yrs back the folding knife concept was rarely possible. This is a simple old folding knife from middle eastern area. I saw this type of folding knifes in turkey, Yemen etc where the knifes has a curved Handel and decorated grips. Secondly if it was under the soil for 400 yrs then tge rust and oxidation must damage the blade much more.
@ReXtorer
@ReXtorer 9 месяцев назад
This is not a knife from the east. This is a knife from Europe. This knife was popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was also called a razor knife.

I'm not sure what to think about it. I usually don't like touching things that are over 100 years old, except for cleaning, as it's best to keep such things in their original condition. But you have good skills, respect for that
@sallycarroll6329

Why is it better to keep them in their original condition? Are they not just going to rot away?

Não usou a soda, não usou a lixa de esteira para acertar as bordas da faca, não usou o afiador de pedra... Praticamente a faca não ficou funcional em termos de corte. O que houve com você?!🤔

@@dottednumpad your right. I retract my comment. I did more research after and found out there were various types of folding knives since the 600 BC.

Just my opinion, but that isn't a restoration by any stretch. It is merely a rough cleanup at best... Restoration is when you actually make it look and function like it would have when initially made... Obviously it isn't a functioning knife at this finished point! I do appreciate your efforts, but it is merely cleaning up the metal and that's it...

Well, there are couple schools of thought or techniques about restoration. One is to just rescue the piece and stop the deterioration and the other is what you propuse. In any case, it’s up to the restorer to choose which one should use. All depends on the antiquity of the piece.

Well if you start replacing parts it’s not worth as it would be changing crap out such as the blade and etc
@Zeromaru42
@Zeromaru42 9 месяцев назад
@@liljam92Yeah if you replace the parts depending on what you replace and how much it can become a big Ship of Theseus situation. So I definitely understand keeping it original and it has a charm to it as it's original form.
