My uncle's 79 Malibu ran 13.3 with a stock bottom end 327 w/flotek 180 alum. heads, comp magnum .480 cam, performer rpm intake, holley 650, headers, th350 w/ 3000 stall, 3.73 gear, and 275 60 15 drag radial. Street car that drove to track. So you guys are doing great. Right on track.
Yes they are! They Launch straight and great street cars! I had a 79 like this one, had a 406 mild engine, Dish Top Pistons, 461 Straight Plug Double Humps, Small Cam, 2500 Stall 350 Turbo with Shift Kit, 323 Gears. It would smoke just about anything on the streets. 7.80 on Street Tires and Pump Gas 93 Octane. 1/8 miles track. Mustang eater! I was tearing them up, Supercharged/Nitrous Mustangs
Im about to build a 406 after my 383 finally bit the bullet, first video that came up was yours, saw the thumbnail and i was like hey that's my home track!
If the motor makes as much power as claimed in the install video, it 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 be capable of much quicker ET's. Probably into the 10's depending on total weight. The rub is that everything else needs to be taken into consideration and optimized to do that. The gearing, the suspension, the torque converter all need work together to put maximum power to the ground as soon as possible. He's not using a transbrake or 2-step to get the engine near converter stall speed before launching. He doesn't even appear to be loading the converter at all and the shifts are spaced pretty far. Lastly, with how the car squats on launch, there is a good amount of suspension work that needs to be done before things like a brake/converter/gearing can be upgraded or the car will just blow the tires off at the line.
Malibu is a great drag car. My dad's buddy had a couple of hemi chargers, stock, '66 and a '68, honest 150 mile an hour cars. He built a malibu, 400 small block, 202 heads, big cam, 400 trans, thought it was quicker than his hemi's. Pretty much what your buddy has. Pretty cool.
Had this same car. 406, Dish Top TRW, 461 Straight Plug Double Humps, Small Cam I think was Crower? 2500 Stall 350 Turbo Shift kit, 323 Posi gears. Everyday Driver. She 7.80 with Street Tires, on Pump Gas 93 Octane. 1/8 mile track Very low budget engine, but would smoke just about everything that pulled up beside me on the street. I was beating supercharged/Nitrous Mustangs like it wasn't nothing. I'm looking to build another 400, just wondering if it would just be cheaper and less leg work from running down parts and to and from the machine shop, to just buy one off the internet that's already built and Dynoed and ready to drop in and crank up. Does anyone have any suggestions on engines? Thanks in advance
A little trick that helps the G bodys from pulling up the left front tire at the strip is punping up the right rear air shock to the max or some guys would make a kind of solid shock for the right rear, like a peice of box tube with holes drilled in the top and bottom, or with heim joints or whatever. Something about the frame on those cars, if you reinforce the over the axle part of frame or wrap the rest of the frame then it won't do it either.
Drag Bags work pretty good. Adjustable upper and lower control arms with solid bushings, get that instant center dialed in with upper control arm extensions, 50/50 shocks and some slicks, Moroso supertrick springs on the front, 90/10 Comp Engineering shocks, shit can the sway bar and it'll launch like a NHRA stocker. Loose 10 inch converter and a 4-33 gear, should be deep in the 11s.
@@thereluctantgearhead4544 you right! I was just trying to throw in the ghetto fix the old guys did back in the day. I remember 3 dudes picking up the right rear of a G body and someone underneath shoving in a piece of square stock in place of the shock, the car would sit like 3" higher on the right rear, but it would leave straight as an arrow and you wouldn't get a 1 tire fire lol. This was late 90s btw, obviously there are way better and safer ways to do it nowadays.
I have a buddy that runs a NHRA stock Malibu wagon with the 305 it was born with, it runs 11.60s in the 1/4 with a few inches of air under the front tires on launch. The engine makes around 400hp. Basically all stock with a few exceptions. The cam is weird. Stock 390/410 lift, shitload of duration and extremely tight lobe separation. People can learn a lot from cars like that. Making the most with the least. NHRA Stock and Superstock are a good example of how to go fast with many rules trying to keep ya from going fast.
I have a G-body that I've had for 25yrs, I'm shooting for 9.50s with a NA 496 Chevy. It's pretty basic. It's already run 10.00s with the old combo, but the revised build should be at least a half second quicker. It ran 10.40s with a 357ci SBC. 10 flat with a 468ci. Damn tracks are all closed down around me now tho, gotta drive 3-4 hrs to the nearest track that's still open. The bitch is I live 15 miles from a dragstrip, but it's been closed all year.
Are you kidding me? It is a high 12 second street car and a lot of factory stock cars can run the 1/4 mile from low to high 11 seconds. And many modded cars and trucks nowadays run far quicker than that. But if that is what you think is fast in today's world and that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy then go right ahead. Lol
Runs a hell of a lot better. I'm a big fan of the Malibu, I have a 81 wagon I've had several bigblocks go thru. Been sitting for years tho. Too many projects.
Good luck with it but something happens, my old school setup on my 89 Iroc-z was, 355, cast flat pistons, factory connecting rods, stock crankshaft, 292 302 550 571 Lunati camshaft, 462 casting heads full porting, Victor jr intake manifold, holley 750 carburetor, 5500 stall converter and 3.70 gears, 12.20 et with 108 mph,
Love the malibu I'm that guy. Those distributor hold downs are very important glad you guys got it right. Awesome I wonder what rpm they were shifting and what gears in the rear. Did seem to hook well.
I was wonderin what your thoughts would be on how well a stock 2005 cadillac sts with the 4.6 northstar would do.... I;d like to play around with the pcm and adjust some stuff.. From what i read you need caddy's tune program and that is quite expensive do you know of any programs that will work? Thanks love the vids
I am 70 years old. I have noticed in my life that people that cuss a lot think that it makes them tufter. It’s like a person that drinks 3 beers then wants to fight. Don’t forget the backwards ball cap. Thanks
I have literal zero interest in being tough and I don't want to fight anyone. I view cuss words as enhancers. Like, when you wear new pants and your friend is like, "oh, cool pants" VS them saying "Great fucking pants!" Which one is gonna make you feel better? Conversely, when you're upset whats gonna get the point across more? "Boy, this sucks." Or "Man, this really FUCKING sucks!" I'm not one of those people that has to swear to form a coherent sentance. I'm very capable of speaking with respect when the situation necessitates it. Like, when I'm in church, I'm not dropping F-bombs left and right. But this RU-vid channel isn't church. Its a visual representation of the things that interest me. I don't ask anyone to be anything other than what they are and it would be respectful if you did the same.
@@SniderTron3000 I was respectful , I didn’t cuss you out to enhance my conversation. Liked I said , people don’t need to cuss to enhance ( as you put it ) their vocabulary. Either way , carry on young blood. Thanks
I know y'all are happy with it but something still isn't up to par if it's got some good stuff in it. Honestly being a 406 and decent cam it should be closer to 11.50. Is the convertor set up for that cam?
It's a pretty tight converter for the setup. This 406 was toned down a lot from the previous setup when he bought it. Smaller hydraulic roller cam, went from 1.6 to 1.5 rockers, the headers on it aren't super great but he doesn't have a new setup. I'd bet with the new headers, a looser converter, football in the spring, better shocks and some soft tires it would see real low 12's
That’s awesome! 13’s is fast ! Love the car! Nice and clean 👌🏻 Lloyd seems like a pretty good guy👍🏻 Congratulations hope to see more of all you guys racing ! Love it !
I think there's a lot of variables. This car is more of a street cruiser. It has like a 2000 stall converter and if I remember right it was shifting at 5500rpm? I don't remember what timing was in it
A 406 is a lot faster your running a pretty mild set up for a 406 I hope you have 5.7 or 6 inch rods the factory 5.56 rods are weak ! They cost me 3 blocks before I went to 6 inch olds rods back 25 years ago now days they have lots more options but the 5.56 will bend in half like a horse shoe I have some around my tools as reminders of what not to run and this combo is about as good as a stock rod will do so im guessing you have stock rods high 11s low 12s is about as good as mine did before id window a block with stock rods, just swap a lunati crank they used a cast steel not forged but cast steel , and they don't cost a lot go with floating pin 6 inch rods spiral locks and a 600 lift comp cams or Schneider 302 or 305 duration roller cam lifters and rockers, better shocks and 390 gears and its a 10 sec car with no bottle.
2900 lb car , it could run those times with a 327 or 350 , a 406 with pro1 heads should have it in the 10s with 550 hp lol.... more like you have a weak motor with low compression in a light car about 375 hp tops....
