- I've added timeline timestamps - As we are well into 2020 the Space Marines seem something I should put off no longer, despite still having some other races and factional elements I need to cover in the wider galaxy of 40K it seems the right time to begin the process of covering the Space Marine’s. While it is tempting for me to go all in on a weighty singularly comprehensive video that covers every possible detail of a legion/chapter, from experience this would become an all consuming sprawling multi-hour video that would likely take me months to create - I want these instead to be consumable and not hinder production of other material each month. I was all ready to leap straight into the first Legion… but then I realised in order to properly begin this series, it must establish how this all began. So this is a deliberately condensed version which I think hits the key elements from the beginning to the Primaris - so that I can continue on from there. Lastly I’ll say that as per usual anything or anyone I’ll omit related to a legion’s history or events will be by choice, to either save time, or pin til later.
@Luetin09, would you happen to have any thoughts on why some of the Primarchs developed strong psychic abilities while others did not, despite all being sons of the Emperor?
Astartes episode 5 followed up with an hour and a half of LT Space Marine goodness? You guys are holding back the darkness of this quarantine-thanks for yet another impeccable piece of content (only just started it, but I already know I'll love every second)!
How is Angron, the giant red winged demon of khorne not related? The dude who is known as the oathbreaker, and the betrayer, the Red Angel, and the Lord of the Red Sands doesn't look like the embodiment of war? The man's wargear is the armour of Mars, and he owned two chain axes called gorefather, and gorechild.
As much as I'm not a Dornian fan-boy, I felt summing him up as having the "mastery of building walls" was a mega understatement. I'd argue that he was gifted with the mastery of stubborness and defiance. As a master builder, including earthworks and fortifications if he chose to dig his heels in on a world (Iron Cage) very little could get him to feck off again. It was his stubbornness and defiance that led to the Imperial Palace being fortified so it wouldn't fall. It was his stubbornness and defiance that led him to attack a Chaos Warship and get his paws chopped off (because lets face it, he not dead).
He’s also a master of not giving a shit about peoples egos and self beliefs; Rogal Dorn Don’t Give A Fuck and he’s gonna tell you straight what he thinks no matter how it hurts
@@RecklessFables Honestly, playing 8th against old marines, tacticals and devastators can still put out a lot of shots. Scouts are still great at forcing someone to pay attention to a point (or gathering victory points if they don't go for them). Only having one wound, and armor saves not being as relevant makes them a bit squishier than in 7th and before. That said, this is just my experience fielding sisters or admech against them in a pickup store match (Oh I miss those...) and I don't consider myself anywhere close to a tournament level player.
I tapped out. Fantasy and 40k both started changing hectically. It's a FUCK TON of money i invested over 15 years in both, not to mention time. 40k is now moving a different direction. My sets are boxed and done and dusted. Tapping out of this madness hahaha
As thanks to big E, you shall now join us brother in fighting Nurgel by going outside and punch the corona demon in the face 👊 don't forget wash your hands after 👍
You consistently post the highest quality videos I’ve ever seen on RU-vid. Every single video is of the highest quality. Well done yet again. This is amazing, and just what I needed in this stressful time. Thank you Luetin. You’re the best!
It's genuinely incredible, right? I mean, there are many amazing 40k lore channels, but Luetin09 is arguably the best. You have people like Oculus Imperia, Baldermort, and 40k Theories, but Luetin does "epic" better than everyone.
If you like luetin's objective but personal take that is thorough and complete, I highly recommend my favourite RU-vid channel LikeStoriesOfOld. He does the best film essays on RU-vid, hands down.
Good stuff, though I do feel Primaris have a bit of an uncomfortable real world aspect. Games Workshop wanted to expand their Space Marines range and existing lore limited that, hence the story you just told of the Primaris development. Having them just be better tramples over the idea of a Space Marine candidate proving themselves then working through scout/devastator/assault/tactical to become a well rounded flexible warrior. I think it'd been more interesting for the Primaris surgery to be something that was available to a Space Marine in a window of a few hundred years after their existing organs had fully matured (after they had worked through the disciplines) and serves as a specialisation rather than a straight upgrade. Instead of 3 extra organs have a range of potential changes that force them into a few roles, losing the flexibility they previously had for more specific power. Those Space Marines too old or that decline the Surgery go on to be the Veterans we know now, their experience used to lead younger squads or deploying as veteran assault/tactical/devastator squads or using terminator armour.
1:19:50 I left YT on as I slept and when I awoke this morning, I was greeted with one of the most bad ass slide shows ever, excellent way to begin the day.
I always found it funny that many within the 40k fandom had much the same reaction to Primaris Marines that the normal Astarties had. Fear, Disgust, Confusion, Distrust, and Anger.
@@Xenith230 In the eyes of the firstborns? Probably because an entire new breed of space marine hid away in labs for ten millennia just appeared randomly. This same new breed was made by a distrusted figure of the Mechanicus who “tampered” with the emperor’s work. Also the fact that none of these Primaris understood the firstborn cultures or knew anything about them. Also the fact that the Primaris could make the firstborns obsolete.
You're one of the best lore youtubers out there, and as far as I am concerned the one with the best voice. A soothing, calm yet perfectly articulated voice talks about the grim dark future where there is only war, carnage and the laughter of the dark gods? Sign me up.
In Rowboat Girlyman's defense, I wonder if having mixed lineage chapters might eventually cause issues when they need replacements and have to pull from a mixed stock of geneseed.
@Hakageryuu "Historically Racist" Lel dont mention near every country evers history, US history of Racism isnt even anyones history except the US's and its very little. A country that takes anyone from anywhere having one of the simplest and open borders throughout history points towards the opposite. Dont even @ me
It can be summed up as thus: the Primarchs were the ultimate the Emperor could make, one step above the Custodes. Then came the Astartes, the legions to retake humanity's birthright. And when 9 lords and their legions fell, Gulliman ordered Cawl to create an improved version of Astartes for humanity's darkest hour. Let's be honest: the Astartes Firstborn were holding it back well and if things continued as they were, the Primaris would never have been woken. Them being woken is a sign of desperation for the Imperium. And for Games Workshop, because seriously, the stagnation of the plot had to be resolved SOMEHOW. You all begged for it and you got your wish: the plot has moved on. So quit your bitching already.
Primaris are just boring, it's just a different name. There's nothing unique about them, nothing interesting. They could have replaced the ultramarines or something, dunno. As it is, they're just not fun.
Oh my god how did I miss this upload! I have been listening back through the catalogue and I am so excited to see some newer uploads too. You are hands down THE. SINGLE. BEST SOURCE of WH40K content on youtube. Your videos have given me a clearer understanding of the Lore of this universe more than any other person
If I had to guess, the choice of mono-primarch chapters was out of both tradition and practicality. It’s easier and quicker to have the geneseed shipped in for replacement if the stock is compromised, and to screen for mutation, if it’s only from a single primarch.
Dude....i love the videos. I've been playing 40k since 6th edition. Your vids have given me insight on a lot of background that truthfully I'm too lazy to read about. I do appreciate the video for what the truly are.
Ive been watching you for the good part of a few months now. I have to say Im so thankful for this channel and your existence Luetin. Ive always had mental health issues, and sleeping is no easy task. More often than not I find myself staring into apparitions created by my mind or trying to silence the other people in my head. I started listening to your channel after my friend told me about warhammer and I wanted to learn more I started listening to you especially when Im trying to sleep and the past few months of sleep have been the best theyve ever been. Of course its still no small task but I just want to let you know how much easier youve made it. I have more energy during the day and Im happier, and I also get to learn about the insane 40k lore since Im also a lore junky. I know im just some random small person in a following of hundreds upon thousands, but if you ever find this comment I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Keep up the amazing work L, -Some random internet stranger
Can you make a video on Belisarious Cawl? His existence in the lore is very strange. He's able to just make massive innovations on occasion and no one cares? What's he been doing for 10k years? I'm not very familiar with the lore, so please forgive me if I am missing something.
I know nothing about Warhammer, have never played any games in any sense of the word, but your channel has made me incredibly interested in the lore and stories of the Warhammer universe. Great videos and narration, thanks for keeping me entertained in this lockdown!
I think the new primaris chapters made at the end of the war only using the gene seed of one primarch was maybe for logistical reasons, as it would likely be far easier to ship out the gene stock of one primarch to a chapter, rather than figuring out which group of genes to send out to which chapter
What also interests me is Alpha Primus - Cawl's personal space marine helper who was the first successful primaris prototype. He's much more augmented than the production primaris, which weren't all made that way due to difficulty of making, and also the fact that Primus spends all of his time suffering. Crawl's intention when making him was to create something akin to a promarch, but this plan failed, mostly likely because Cawl can make the physique, but he cannot weave a soul like the Emperor did. Primus is a potent psyker, however other psykers can't detect this unless he allows them. This if I remember correctly was somewhat disturbing to another space marine, a librarian who up until now had no issues telling his warp powered kin apart.
Corvus Corax, the only Primarch able to (psychically) turn himself invisible to the naked eye... >"He got the short end of the stick". Suuuuuuure. 😂😂😂👌 -a Raven Guard player.
THAT.....WAS....BRILLIANT! This is the first I've heard about the Primaris! (Yes I've been asleep!) Feel a bit like Gulliman waking up lol. Excellent video I need to read more of the new lore....still not finished the Horus Hersey yet though.....Well done sir!
Great work as always, lads... These videos help me in explaining to my friends why the lore of 40K is an incredible, complex and well-written story independent of playing the games or buying and painting your own custom Chapter. Again, Thank You. I know you have to put a lot of work into producing a video like this, and it's greatly appreciated. Keep up the great work.
19:25 *there is a book describing the event of MARS ALIGNING WITH EARTH* and some mechanicum guys trying to steal *EVERY KNOWLEDGE EVER* from the warp... which kinda works
Bro that was amazing I been watching 40k videos the last year and they been helpful and fun but you gave a really good overview not to much are lil I enjoy it thank you for makeing something so cool
An artist and musician I greatly admire recently asked on social media "Illuminate me. What is the general appeal of Warhammer? Who are the good guys?" I told him there are no good guys. maybe Imperial Guard.
"The ring passed," I've literally been switching between the lore of LOTR and 40k. So when I heard that, it had me bust out laughing. Love your content and thank you for the lore.
While I love Vulkan for various reasons, I believe Rogul Dorn of the Imperial Fistswas a gifted architect and his true power was tactical defense. He could probably build a snow fort which might end up causing enemies to tire themselves out and their resources before striking them down almost effortlessly. And he wasn't lacking courage or fury in warfare, considering what his Chapter sons - the Black Templars, had become. I also think that the emperor was able to essentially psychically shape shift his form in the viewpoint of others, especially considering what happened when he first met Mortarion and Leman Russ, all hidden from common view. Having said that I do believe he was probably tall for a human, like very tall. Probably somewhere between 8ft to 10 ft, but then in comparison to the Space Marines and the primark's themselves he was probably almost bought 16 ft tall using or unconsciously exuding his psychic powers to project himself that big. Which also involves The Golden Throne aka the Astronomicon, likely being many feet tall and wide. And I doubt that he suddenly started growing after his comatose, practically dead, state (which is one of the reasons why people call him the “corpse emperor”, as an insult. Because it's partially true).
I always liked to think he made a pact with Malal, as described in the old WFRP rulebook, the chaos god who's entire purpose is to foil the plans of every other chaos god. The other 4 chaos gods are angry because they found out that he'd agreed to turn all of humanity against them. though they never made it canon, it would make so much sense. also kinda makes sense that the Emperor's true initials are S.U
Thanks to you describing Thunder Warriors I've just realised what GW could do for new Chaos units... Khorne Thunder Warriors! the Khorne version of Custodes!
Astarte was forgotten because she had a nervous breakdown, had secretly (or so she thought) created a cadre of genetically obedient soldiers and subsequently destroyed all the research labs and gene stock, killing herself in the process. What she didn't know is that Malcador & Valdor were aware of it (as was the Emperor) and it was a ruse to misdirect the Chaos Gods, to lull them into a false sense of security, that the Emperor's plans had been halted.
the emperor reminds me of Conrad Kurze on nostromo. The emperor needed Astares warriors who could survive the surgeries ,live vivisection and mental indoctrination. I assume the process thunder warrior survivors though it would be obvious to apothecaries who they were. Quotas needs strong, well fed, warriors. Kurze needed the fittest to survive the processes. Who were the ganger, the criminal, the murderer! To Conrad's ultimate disgust and revulsion!
As a long time Space Marine junkie who drifted away and came back to see the Primaris overshadowing my regular marines this video really helped me grow to care about the new boys in the market and better envision how my mixed personal chapter will exist.
Bobby-G upon being reawaken was miffed that what they haven't improved upon his Codex in 10k years. I mean, religious dogma is something he and the Emperor fought to be rid of, and now some of his successor chapter deemed his writing as sacred writ.
The Emperor traded total darkness and savagery for a twilight of eternal war. Unfortunately that hasn't allowed for any improvement in 40,000 years. Some institutions are past their usefulness and might be preventing improvement. It might be interesting to see what the Emperor would do if he woke up.
I think GW has a big problem with their current writing in that during the Emperor's fight with Horus, he held back, he so loved his son that he held back his full power and only after being fatally wounded did he blight Horus out of existence, I think it was after this (edit: In Horus' last moments, not after he was blinked out) that the Chaos gods and gifts fled Horus and he was left severely broken and understanding the depths of his betrayal. It was supposedly a huge emotional toll on the Emperor but now with the writing, his talk with Guilleman and with Korvus where it's hinted that they've seen through his facade. They are now going in the direction that the Emperor didn't really care for the Primarchs or Space Marines in general and saw them as his tools. I think this is a product of them choosing a path forward that involves conflict between Guilleman returning to lead the Imperium only to enrage the Emperor that intentionally left Humans in charge and seeing Space Marines and non human. I really think there is conflict in the lore here that I would really like to see resolved.
The timeline of the eventuality leading to Astartes legacy suffering, existing for real has now been mostly erased and re-written to not require it, for real and not much cheating to be honest. We have a different, better timeline now. A bit like the good Startrek and co-existing multidimensional multiverse. Rest in peace Astartes timeline. You will still be remembered as at least a hypothetical possibility to be weary of the events that could lead to your and others as a result of your mistakes, existence and your own suffering being required, for whatever reasons in the timeline
Me at 10PM: "Just one Luetin video won't hurt, right?..." Me at 4:42AM: _"ALL PRAISE THE GOD EMPEROR, FOR HIS BEING IS DIVINE. THE EMPEROR PROTECTS, THE EMPEROR WILLS, AND SO, WE FIGHT."_
Me driving the truck from coast to coast at 3am: Nice! New Luetin video couldn't hurt After 5 minutes driving 200mph: *may Astronomican shine before my path*
I see a strange glow outside my window. My mother says that I've binge watched youtube the whole night and it's now dawn. I say the holy light of the emperor is upon me.
Shamans: Wait, *HOW* many of us need to die to make this Emperor guy? Malcador: Uhh.... All of you? Except me ofc Shamans: OK seems legit, we trust you Malcy! Malcador: **pents fingers** yeeeess.. goooood
I believe this is not cannon, in fact the origins of the Emperor are shrouded in Mystery as the Origins and how Politicians Amass such wealth with their salaries as such... XD
"What's that guy's deal?" "He's an angel." "Wow! How about that dude?" "He's a werewolf." "Woah! What do you do?" "I'm space Genghis Khan. But I've got a sweet mustache."
Well done, Luetin! On behalf of us "newbies" to the 40K universe, thank you for keeping your videos clear and concise. I know it must be easy for those of you who grew up with this, to want to just go off on these subjects that you learned quite some time ago, but for us newbies, this is one of the most intensely detailed universes I've ever encountered. I patiently await your next video, sir.
@@pyroplays2017 Everyone has to start somewhere. Even the old, rusty venerable veterans need new blood to carry the torch to the darkness, bringing new light to the Emperor's Realm. The Emperor protects.
