Warhammer 40k is a setting that not only glorifies being the bad guy, it also rationalises evil. This is one of the core essences of 40k. This is NOT for everyone as a lot of people do not like being evil. This is why for example, my favourite faction in the setting are The Night Lords, unlike most other factions in 40k, the Night Lords do not deny that they are evil and this is not for everybody.

Agree, and more spotlight. We also need more female protagonist in books and lore events, like Greyfax, Lotara or Celestine. The Pariah Nexus show is a good example, it was perfectly balanced in my opinion.

I'd love to have new Warp Spiders, its a shame GW let our hatefull space elves down and so many other factions. That said, new units for the sister would be cool, many of the last entries were pretty disapointing (I'm looking at you baby carrier and dogmata). Overall the problem is more that any chapter of the SM has more models than 3 other factions together. I know they are the poster boys and the cash printer of GW but its just infuriating...

Pretty sure there is already "female" SM, but you can't tell as so many modifications and hormones turned the former person into a living muscular killing machine. As you said, SM are more flesh golems than gendered individuals at the end of the day. I really understand why some people want female SM, and they can make them all they want. i've seen several hobbyist on instagram converting or kitbashing their owns and they are wonderfull. Custom faction are here for this. There is no need to change the setting for it. It perfectly fits with the grim, parodic and dystopic aspect of 40k. I'm a fervent feminist, I'm all about inclusivity and diversity in medias, its heavily needed. But it should be done correctly. GW started to make diversity in all the other factions with female variations of most of infantry troops and that's great, they should continue this way we need more important female characters, badasses like Lotara or Greyfax. A female Magos from the mechanicus would be really cool (a lore-friendly one, not a s3xy one obviously...). But SM allready have a female chapter. Its the sisters of battle (and they are wwwwaaayyy cooler imo). I get the point "Yes but SM are the poster boys of the setting." In my opinion, its the only valid point about all this debate. IBut I think its better to push Sisters as the poster girls of the hobby - as GW started to do- than adding female ultrablueberries. GW have said in past Q&As that there wouldnt be a difference due to the gene seed and in the OG model line there was a female space marine and she didnt look all that different from the males it didnt sell well and that is why they dont make them essentially @@ellhann5340

One of the realest things I've seen. I feel like a lot of the hate the 40k universe is getting is due to a lack of media literacy, the universe has always been an absurdist, extreme setting that is meant to be dark; hence, grimdark.

I was super into Star Wars. Then the Last Jedi happened. Shortly after I found 40k. I think that a lot of people had that experience. When I got here I didn't want everything to change, and I still don't. I too am worried that too many Primarchs returning might push the setting away from Grim-Dark. Point is this is my home now too, and I thank the community for being accepting of me. I don't want to see this ruined either. I love Warhammer (both fantasy and 40k) because it let's me step away from real world shit. I will not stand to have it infected by the same shit that's destroyed all the other culture around me.

NGL, I love this video sooo friggin much. I quit warhammer tabletop back at the end of 9th edition, I played guard and orks. My local gamestore at the time got really political and I just wanted a place to have fun and blow stuff up. This vid makes me wanna pull out my unpainted cadia stands box and paint it. I want to get back into 40k tabletop but I just dont know if I have the will to go out and try to meet more people right now. I'm still studying and I know later this year my homies I met playing the first space marine game will be with me still when I boot up space marine 2. I just don't know if I have the patience anymore to argue with people on terrain rules or deal with not getting 10+ points because my bases are not painted on half my models. I love 40k but it feels like Dark souls 3 for me right now. Idk if I want to get to NG+7 or just chill with a summon sign down by a boss to see if I get summoned. Maybe if 11th edition comes out I might hop back in the tabletop. Still read the books, still play many of the games but tabletop has been on a break for me. There's something for everyone in 40K but 40K is not for everyone. If these people truly want to be a part of the hobby than should understand that isn't Star Wars, Star Trek and especially not Mass Effect.
At the beginning of this video I expected a "ugh wimmin bad" take or whatnot as an ex-4channer who has been exposed to some really deranged people, but I feel like you expressed the perfect balance between both extremes. 40k doesn't have to cater to your sensibilities, but people in the fandom shouldn't judge you for choosing to make your own sub-faction that goes against the lore. That's the great thing about Warhammer. If you want female Space Marines, kitbash them. If you want Tau Marines, kitbash them. If you want Demon-posessed Custodians, lore be damned, KITBASH THEM! Don't bicker about established lore if you don't like it, be the change you want to see. Hell, I am currently using some of my old resin Firstborn bits and female heads from Fantasy to kitbash my very own "female Chaos Space Marine" as a stand in for a master of posession (Human female apprentice of a CSM psyker who lost his "Space-Marineness" after a Faustian bargain gone wrong, she managed to score some old power armor scaled to a human from a space hulk formerly belonging to a rogue trader, she came about because a lot of my Sergeants and Characters are music references, and wanted to do a Diana Ross). As long as you are willing to come up with a cool story, anything goes.

Outside of that, I used to frequent /tg/, and heard some people complaining about there not being female Space Marines, but never really experienced that more than the occadional twitter screencap. As I don't use Twitter, I generally don't pick up very much drama, and even then, have been working on keeping away from internet drama ever since I went to therapy.

My perspective on the female/lgtbq space marines is as follows. I think it's awesome that people express an aspect of themselves in their minis, whether they're painting a trans, gay, or other flag on their space marines or making their astartes female. Amen! As for the 40k show. GW is going to have a more hand-on approach than tolkien esteate had on rings of power, or the writer had on witcher. fun fact, (usually) people that say they are tolerant to everyone are the most intolerant pieces of shit. anyway as for 40k the only area of it that am familiar with is some of the lore and the games (TTRPGs and computer).. most recent once being darktide and (hopefully) rogue trader, and honestly ever the 8 or so years i have come to love the setting, some of the changes in recent years are in universe and done by GW are a bit eh but regardless i still enjoy the setting.
20+ year veteran of the hobby, old enough to remember that when I explained Ghazkul to my dad, even he instantly recognized the Margaret Thatcher reference, chiming in to say this is a *bit* of an L take. 40K absolutely *is* for everyone but not everyone necessarily will vibe with it. Also, I want to say that there is actually no in unchangeable reason for there to not to be female space marines. Very many “established facts”, such as the space wolves being incapable of having successor chapters, changed with the Indomitus crusades. Or the Squats being extinct. Or Cadia no longer with us. Or the expansions and further detailing of the Necrons. Or how originally even Space Marines were envisioned more as brutal police type figures vs the monkish warrior brotherhoods they became. Now regarding female marines, one of the best in lore references we can find for this possibility is in the Bile series of books. Fabius Bille creates the New Men & Gland Hounds across gender/sex spectrums, he proved geneseed can be used on non atypical male forms. He even mused that perhaps to exclude women was an attempt by big e to deny astartes from ever envisioning anything like a normal human life. Many references to the mainline Horus heresy itself reference that this was an active choice versus an immutable fact (examples Scars; Malcador chastises big e for “not giving them (the Primarchs) sisters.) And wanting the imperium and humanity to go beyond the unrelenting, grim dark, they are drowning in, is a wish matched by Bobby G himself. In fact, when we even look at the salamanders, one of their most beloved aspect is their humanity, same as the lamenters. It’s been very odd seeing these waves of new folks in the hobby over the years, celebrate and uphold these very humane and virtuous aspects of characters in the setting, and yet cry, when people say that they would like to see rays of hope, enter the equation. Or even to see a non-overly sexualized approach to female characters. With the revival of the sisters of battle, we saw a much greater more grim-dark, much more scarier and uglier approach to representing the sisters, and it was universally adored. And it makes sense. (in so much that things can make sense in a universe where giant titan machines that use psychic powers use human psychics as batteries.) Or say wanting a deeper and richer expansion and representation of Xenos and non human factions. The recent Necron book such as the infinite and the divine, and the twice dead king, prove that there is an audience starved for these kinds of perspectives and richness. I’m going to be real with you there are eldar models that are legally old enough to drink at this point. Meanwhile, how many space marine lieutenants have we seen? It’s been wonderful over the last 3 to 5 years seeing the explosion of interest and passion in this crazy and wonderful setting of trauma, giant fucking robots and power armoured fantasies caught in endless violence, but I’m afraid I’m always going to be one of those old timers who is proudly a gate opener versus the gatekeeper. The more people that fall in love with this universe, the more options variance, and here comes that word, *diversity*, serves to grow and nurture that growing community. Much as I agree with pretty much everything you've said, just felt like mentioning that the 40K from the Maggie Thatcher satirising days is long since gone and that 40K does genuinely rationalise much of the evil in the setting. It's not that it's doing that deliberately, necessarily, it's just that it's bad satire, if it can even be read as satire at all. It has all the talking points of fascist ideology (racial purity, luddism, a state-enforced level of ignorance amongst the general population, extreme religious adherence, xenophobia against outsiders coming to destroy your way of life) but the problem with the setting is that it fails to actually satirise them in any meaningful way and, worse than that, it shows them as not only acceptable but entirely necessary. Obviously we know things like nazism and white supremacy are absurd - there is no need for racial purity, there is no effort by foreign invaders to wipe out western civilisation, knowledge and betterment of the self have a lot of proven good things to offer society and religion is largely only belief. But in 40K there ARE invaders coming to get us. There ARE alien creatures that want nothing more than to see us dead or enslaved. There IS a genuinely divine figure that leads humanity (even if as a corpse from a throne) with his army of what are effectively ubermensch analogues. There is also a very real threat of mutation from chaos or other factors should an apparent 'purity' in humanity not be preserved. If people learn too much about the universe, that mere knowledge can be a literal gateway for demons of hell to pour through. If it was good satire this wouldn't be the case, or there'd be a counterpoint to the Imperium that demonstrate these things as unnecessary. I like the early Heresy era stuff because there actually are a few human factions shown to just be existing, sometimes alongside sentient non-humans, without any of the previously mentioned problems, but obviously they get wiped out pretty quick. My point is, I don't think that there really IS a 'point' that 40K is trying to make anymore. All the satire stuff came about when a bunch of friends living in Thatcherite Britain made a setting and inserted politically relevant (at the time) jokes about the current tory government, the notion of Britain becoming a police state and other elements of our culture that they just found amusing. GW hasn't been that for decades; it's a company that exists to make money and I think it can be a bit disingenuous to try and suggest that there's any kind of 'point' trying to be made by the setting or the company. I don't have any issues with people enjoying it for what it is. I personally love the inherent tragedy of everything humanity COULD have been and how it's all fallen so far. But in the same vein, I think it's reasonable for anyone not intimately familiar with the setting to look at it and think it's questionable, but I feel like that cuts both ways and that it does also make sense as to why so many people who genuinely hold fascist or politically adjacent beliefs to enjoy the setting - because it DOES justify those beliefs, if you choose to read it that way.

They are kind of their own separate thing but the ties to the Adeptus Ministorum can't be cut which is why the Inquisition sorta watches over them to make sure that the Decree Passive is upheld in spirit if not letter.

They wat to "fix" Warhammer the same way they "fixed" Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, James Bond, Indiana Jones, Marvel, DC, D&D, MTG, Blizzard, and on and on and on. As another youtuber said about 40k; Warhammer 40k is not for everyone, it is for anyone. To give the same explanation that he did; It's not for everyone. It never will be. It never has been. However, anyone is welcome to join in the hobby... so long as you don't try changing anything. It's nice to see other 40k youtubers having the same kind of mentality.
People ignoring Sisters of Battle gets my goat because they're way cooler than Space Marines. You get interesting female character in the guard, plus female models. The guard are cooler and more interesting than space marines. There's no* female space marines because there was one mould with one pose for marines in second edition and they made up some lore to justify it. That's what's established. * Apart from two ancient and incredibly ugly models from RT.

Yep, Warhammer 40k is a glorious setting, larger and greater than almost anything else because of it's flexibility and scale. It is more than just grimdark, it can be comedic, heroic, noble, horrific, or even fun, and being spread across a myriad of worlds that can accomodate any story, of any genre, it is a gift to imagination.
I do not play tabletop games but I love the lore. As a video game player and cinephile I warn the 40k community, man the gate at all times. Just as the imperium is besieged on all sides by their enemies so too is nerdom under attack by the insidious creep of normies. Gamers did not remain vigilant and the product got worse. Movie fans did not remain vigilant and the product got worse. Comic readers did not remain vigilant and the product got worse. 40k and indeed all of tabletop gaming must remain vigilant. DnD becoming what it is now, thanks to shows like Critical Role, is like the beginning of Mulan. They were the first guard at the wall to fall, let it be a warning to the rest of the tabletop community. Welcome in only those who would add their own creativity and passion to the established setting. Never think you are being mean or petty when you're protecting your space. I'm more into Warhammer Fantasy, but I can see the appeals of 40k. I look into it every now and then, granted I aren't as dedicated to it as Fantasy but I do enjoy bits and bobs here and there. I do enjoy making scenarios where Fantasy and 40k interlap together, for example, Lizardmen killing anything related to Chaos in the deepest sections of Imperium Hive Cities. This is just my imagination, but I've been verbally crucified for making such suggestions. Otherwise, either is decent nuff I suppose.
I'm concerned with politics aspect of 40k sometimes, some people fall for the fictional propaganda really hard. I like the Imperium being a completely backwards dying empire but some people keep insisting it's actually not that bad to live in and if it is it's only due to xenos, heretics or chaos. Also for the "stop injecting politics in mah apolitical hobber" this entire setting is based on political satire just like how the og star wars was a critique of the American empire's war against Vietnam. Nobody injected politics, you just were too blind to see anything beyond the surface level.
I understand the intent of this video as saying that it's okay for you not to be the intended audience of something, but the hobby is so broad that it can be accommodating in so many other flavors that it isn't prohibitive if one doesn't 100% vibe with a specific small part of it.
Been a fan for a while but recently I've started really collecting. The only thing I hate is Fomo by GW. I want to collect Kill Team but I can't get the old terrain so it feels like I missed out. It would be nice if they made it all available even if it's separated. Now I just won't bother to buy anything Kill Team related. Focusing on collecting the normal range for now. My only negative opinion about it. Blackstone is so much fun but the expansions are sold out and hard to find. It's weird to me they still sell the OG Base box and not the expansions. If you're new to Warhammer I say do a little research and pick your niche you wanna jump in at. Now is a good time if you wait for new models and codexes to release for 10th edition.

Not entirely related, but one thing I've found peculiar as a Brit who grew up with Warhammer (both Fantasy and 40k) and seeing the massive influx of Americans in the last several years is this insistence that Warhammer is "not for children". In the UK Warhammer's primary market was boys aged about 8+. Most people in Britain of a certain age either heard about or got into Warhammer when they were young. So while Americans are obviously very welcome to the hobby, I don't appreciate them trying to pretend it's some really grown up thing that is super serious and dark; I don't think it's right for people to come into a hobby and then try to gatekeep it from the people it was originally designed for in the first place.
Yeah, unfortunately in the 90s alot of warhammer went through the edgey faze, hell it got rid of the squats because "dwars making up biking gangs riding motorcycles in space" was apparently too silly
eh I am annoyed with how games workshop manages the hobby. They're really bad at turning out new models and make terrible decisions with production and prices. the hobby makes more money in the United states than any other country and they have yet to have production in the United States. they pay people poorly and well they are maybe the worst company when it comes to

I think the main mistake people make on this whole female space marines debate is that they think those on the other side are either dumb or uninformed. Oh please. I love the lore of 40k, but I fully accept that it can be, and indeed has been, broken countless times to make room for whatever new plastic crack GW are selling. I also accept that it's pure edgelord territory that's differed dramatically from the slightly tongue-in-cheek days of 1st edn when I started playing. The reason why it's not for everyone isn't because it's handling "weighty themes that some people can't handle (easily one of the most absurd statements I've heard in relation to 40k 🤣), but because GW know their player base (sweaty male prepubescent nerds with no social skills or hygiene products), and therefore appeal directly to THEM. There's a reason why their poster child is a Space Marine, which is basically every sweaty male prepubescent nerd's idea of macho male power fantasy with daddy issues, even down to being castrated. I know that's going to piss a lot of you off, but I just don't care. You know everything I said is true. 🤣

He doesn't seem to be a gatekeeper from what I've seen, just someone actually able to identify the fact that the hobby isn't for absolutely everybody. I DESPISE gatekeeping and it's a shame it's a major part of the Fandom, but he really hasn't shown any signs of it like achcast does
40k is for everyone. @2:04 you say the exact thing, the Imperium doesn't give a shit about your orientation, sex, creed, skin, age. All that matters is will you put yourself on the line for the Emperor and the Imperium. So I really don't see why this is a debate at all, the OG line for Boys only space marines is from an ancient era of White Dwarf. Bit before my time, but at that point Necrons were Chaos war machines. The Lore is whatever GW wants it to be, and I really don't see the need to throw a tantrum over the idea of FSM there is already so much inclussivity in the setting already. The Imperium hardly cares on the matter why should we?

Because the lore builds upon itself. The Chaos Androids existed but they weren’t even a faction with any development, just a few models and an army list. To reuse those models and flesh out the lore by revisioning them as an ancient alien race is different to now having to explain the presence of female space marines despite them never appearing in any of the novels, video games, or updates to the Space Marine model lines. The C’tan were reclassified as shards rather than being the gods they previously were. They did not suddenly become former necrontyr. The lore was reinterpreted but in a way that did not invalidate what had been established.
videos like these make me consider how the community is going to react to Henry Cavil’s warhammer series becoming mainstream. If this is how the community reacts to people asking about why there aren’t female space marines, just simply ASKING, then they should dread the day and pray Amazon goes back on the deal.
A chapter that was thought to have been lost could be made only of women? This way we could keep having MOST Space Marines being males while having the option for a few females, without changing all the whole setting. We know that GW do retcon when they want, and they could create some sort of explanation.
That insult typically is used on people who have no life and focus on completely unimportant factors in life typically outside their control. This is not how it’s meant to be implement.
