A tau and a drone spot a mechanicus and a servo skull. The drone beeps. The tau laughs. The servo skull screams. And the mechanicus bludgeons the tau to death with a toaster. And it's all lorgar's fault. #BlameLorgar
tau: take care of machines because they are cute imperium of man: takes care of machines because they believe they have spirits and those spirits will at best refuse to work or at worst try to murder them if they don't take care of them.
if science fiction has taught me anything it's that if an A.I starts questioning it's existence it's probably a good time to pull the plug. also damn I didn't think my comment would get so many likes let alone a heart from arch. speaking of arch I don't know if you saw this in the bolt gun video but you should check the star wars legends lore about the pias dias, thousands of years ago the republic decided to create their own imperial creed
Immagine this, you had a long night just woke up and you want a cup of coffe. Your coffee pot how ever has a pissed off old crotchety machine spirit because you keep forgetting to clean the pot and appease it's spirit.
Being part of a Titan might not be so bad for them. In the the old Titan graphic novel, the servitors actually look "happy" about being part of something so powerful.
Funny thing is, considering what all is considered crime in Imperium, and thoroughness (or more specificaly lack of it) of courts dealing with civilian population, I would expect much more combat servitors on field, but when you read novels, they are rarely mentioned at all and even then most of time only in role of domestic servants or number munchers working on positions where regular human would die of boredom.
@@libertyprime2013 beat your children, we(zimbabwe) dont have school shootings (and i dont know anyone who has heard of it actually happening in zimbabwe) we also have roughly the same gun control law being a republic in constitution at least.
"Please! Don't leave Farsight! The drones need you! they look up to you.!" Commander Farsight look to the little machines and nodded his head. He took them with him.
3. The drone is SECRET. It does not leave the barracks unless it's in its box or you can make it look like a servo-skull. 4. Sarge will be the judge of whether the drone ACTUALLY looks like a servo-skull. 5. The drone is NOT a she. 6. The drone does NOT have a gender at all. 7. The drone is NOT named Hannah or Fio'whatsit. 8. The drone is NOT named after ANYONE, regardless of if we've met them. 9. The drone is named Spot. It is a good name and is actually sort of witty. All complaints must be hand-written and submitted in person to Interrogator Sarge. 10. Anyone who violates these rules or actually submits a complaint will be made to suffer in ways they cannot possibly imagine.
My Grandfather ordered a pizza once. Extra thick with protein bars. Took over 100 years but it finally got here. The pizza delivery boys grandson was a nice dude. Told me how his father meet his mother while delivering this pizza. Was the most romantic thing I heard in years... I mean it was the only thing I heard in the last 20 years I waited for the pizza. Can't leave home if there is pizza to be delivered to my home.
The fact you so heavily emphasize how the Tau anthropomorphize their drones and use them for everything make me rather curious/worried about Tau drones in the Tau's sex industries.
So I'm not the only one who was thinking this. I'm also thinking about that 'Stealth unit is stuck out there with his drone all alone for long periods of time' and going: "Those Stealth Tau are probably fucking the poor drones when they get to lonely aren't they?"
The Feminist Tau are obviously complaining about fire caste males not looking at them and instead looking on their AI waifus. Then again the Feminist Tau's are not of correct sub-species of Tau to produce offspring capable of reproduction.
I had a dog that did grab a newspaper first try. Of course she then probably thought that if grabbing one of those things made me happy, getting more of them would make me even happier. At least that's the only explanation I can think of for why she grabbed all the neighbors newspapers.
There are many other examples if it knows the words your saying they can get it right first try 90 pacent of the time like it knows what fech means and it knows what a newspaper it is possible
Worse they have Hague at his worst times ten. And that is the minumum requirement to even become a captain. But one has to give it to them, it may take years and millions of lives but they will breach it eventually, only to have marines strom in at last minute and steal all glory leaving the poor bastards to continue their repentance for sins of their ancestors.
Melchett is more just an idiot who is detached from reality so it is a bit different. The soldiers of the Death Korps of Krieg are outright suicidal and will charge trenches with the closest thing to a smile on their faces (maybe, who knows how they look under the gas masks) and their commissars are needed to prevent them from needlessly throwing their lives away because they will do so until no one is left. So more Melchett is in charge and instead of Captain Blackadder we have George be the captain and crank his support for suicidal actions up to 11.
As a military contractor, I confirm that your description of "AI" is exactly correct. Our programming team was chastised for admitting to the media that our giant robot tank was afraid of flowers.
@@awendigowithinternetaccess4400 yep, look up the Autonomous Platform Demonstrator. Extremely advanced, made by brilliant engineers. But the laser scanners could not tell the difference between a low brick wall and a flower bed. Same as how Waymo cars are afraid of plastic bags.
Man, there are times where I wish there was fan animations of your lore videos. Arch's allusions and explanations can bring a rather humorous image if one were to think about it. i.e. Tau Scout and Drone-Chan, Overthinking Dog, and Drone overkill session.
Well you make an adaptive AI Bolter capable of everything from covering fire to walking dogs And helping the elderly , it will get 30 minutes you Gue’la
Remember he also spent more time on Lasguns, and as we all know it's the best gun in universe (after Hot-shot lasguns of course) when properly used, Orks are jealous of Imperial Guards ammount of Dakka and Tau pale in comaprison before the might of our tanks, and before some one says Railguns, I say Vanquishers.
Now this makes me want to see a the last of us/bioshock style game about a tau stuck behind enemy lines with an exceptionally smart drone. Could be quite endearing and would make for an actually really nice companion system
@@the_dropbear4392 if they had STC, they would be humans since the Emperor would be protecting them. Clearly they are stealing Imperial Ideas and claiming it as their own. Perfect reason for a crusade to purge the xeno scum
Sir Dankistan You do realize of the imperium spare is the amount of force necessary to genuinely crush them they will fall to pieces and lose millions of worlds they can’t afford that kind of bull crap
Well the Imperium isn't going to tell warn them. And I suspect the ethereals know about Chaos, but I suspect almost no other Tau believes in daemons. Probably the same ignorance that borders hubris that got man in trouble in the first place.
Dank_Smirk i think that the ta’u Can avoid that. Their drones dont have a full AI. If they just stay there and not make full AI, they Can Keep going. And also, Do you REALLY want ta’u servo skulls and servitors? The ta’u Do cactuly CARE about their citicens lifes.
It could be argued that because the Tau see the drones as pets, and treat them like pets, then if they are using some type of 'relatively simple' AI, the effect that chaos would have on them is to make them more pet like, and possibly more suicidaly loyal to elicit a further bonding emotion, and a stronger sorrow when they throw themselves into dangerous situations. Possibly.
I mean, how soon are they deployed in combat after manufacturing? They probably, literally, are children, even by the relatively short-lived Tau standards.
Tell a dog to fetch the newspaper and it will fetch the newspaper. Tell a cat to fetch the newspaper and you will fetch the newspaper and some cat food.
@@Xarcht I wouldn't call trying to get a dominantly antisocial species to act cooperatively and failing as proof of intelligence. You could probably actually get lions to do that however provided you had the means and the patience.
Imperial guard : "Awwwww ! That railgun drone is soOOooo Cute!" ... Was the last thing he said before his Comissar shot him and the drone in question shot them both.
You would like that, wouldn't you, because the thought that someone could be objectively better than humans (even imaginary humans) must be unbearable. Everything must be dragged down into the same cessspit humanity is wallowing in, so that there's no example of what we could be if we curbed our worst impulses and applied some hard work.
Alknix If we see how shit goes down in 40k. It´s a safe bet that the blueberries get gangbanged by either chaos, tyranids, necrons. Or imperium if they actually do piss them off by accident. but thats just how it rolls in that universe.
+Psychoangel I mean they have the luck of being pretty close to ultramar. So if they advance too far they may enrage the smurf village and papa smurf. Then bye bye tau empire.
@@redenginner Tau are as f*cked as it gets even with their hi-tech. I mean alone against orks or the nommers (tyranids) a lot of their standart weaponary isnt really effective. Sure one hit from a fire warriors gun will drop a choppa boy or gaunt no problem but these guys are normally coming in hordes. Pissing off and die by the ultrasmurfs is a damn mercy kill in comparison.
This is perfect, I'm just getting back into Warhammer and as I pour through the Tau codex I find myself obsessing over very very drone heavy army lists
I like how for a minute, I almost felt like the Tau might be bad for purposely programming their drones to be cute, but then i remembered servitors. Pretty hard to call "Let's hope they take care of their robo pets" dark when you think of those.
The reason Tau AI doesn't rebel is that they haven't had so many movies, books, tv series etc about robots rebelling, because of us humans endless paranoia about AI the warp has made it inevitable that our AI rebels.
the greater good probly been programmed into their ai, so they are brain washed, also they copy the memories of some tau and give the ai to good commanders to act as mentors
Keep in mind the contact of Tau with Chaos is minimal so the Tau AI wouldn't know much about it. When it does... well it would probably start with killing off the humans in the Tau Empire as they are the biggest risk before moving onto everyone else starting with the humans outside of the Tau Empire or the Tau themselves if they try to stop them (and recreate them later with their genetics if they are as nice as the Men of Iron of course). Or it will just get corrupted, that is also very possible.
That "personal" story of your is walking a mighty fine line there. Had a teacher who was developing potential engines for drones and he had a ten year that was a felony if broken
One thing that I've had a hard time understanding is machine spirits. I get that they're simple, animalistic intelligences that live inside of machines, and the more complicated and more powerful a machine is, the more intelligent and free willed its spirit is. One thing I've been looking for confirmation on is whether they actually exist, and if so, if they're only found in human technology, or are actually a part of all technology. Because if these drones have machine spirits, that could explain their surprising ingenuity and creativity
I've always seen it as very similar to the Chaos gods. It is BECAUSE the human's believe the concept of "Machine Spirits" to be true, that they ARE true for the Imperium. For the Tau, who don't hold such superstitions, there's no such psychic energy to spawn such beings.
Ah. That sounds about right. And I guess that since the Tau are supposed to be psychic blanks and hold no sway over the warp, that even if they did believe in something similar, it wouldn't actually bring such intelligence into existence. I actually like the Tau, but I'm starting to see how they've kind of been written into a corner when it comes to meshing with the rest of the lore.
They are likely small fragmented remains of a dark age ai, or slivers of the dragon if mars' power. And they definitely do exist, we had a land raider that had its crew killed before they could get inside. It went and solo took on an Ork waagh for several days
In Phil Kelly's book about commander Farsight, the drones actually speak. With full grammar and syntax and everything. I actually didn't realize that it was the drones speaking at first while reading, so I guess they passed the turing test in a way. Definitely full AI. For that matter, the Tau can download their own intelligences into certain drones, so building simple AI is probably easy. And that was their tech during the second sphere expansion.
Some would argue the ability to reason closely linked wih the ability to adapt and write new scripts autonomously. After all we humans are born with instinctual behaviors, a script if you will, which we will adapt over the course of our lives while we learn from experiences.
Heyo. Masters student in CS researching machine learning here. Just wanted to add some things about real world AI. When arch talks about real AI, what he is talking about is something known as an "Artificial General Intelligence", and that is something we are not near having yet. This would be an AI that could apply its intelligence to a wide range of different problems without any sort of re-training or re-programming. What we do have today are fairly good domain specific AI. For example, we can easily create an AI capable of demolishing a human player at chess or describing what is displayed in a picture. These AI are still extremely intricate at times, and often quite effective, however they do not have general intelligence. A chess playing robot could have some genuine understanding about how to play chess (or at least how to manipulate its outputs such that it wins at chess), but it could not then be loaded onto a car that it could then drive. It would only know chess, and to teach it anything else would require extensive reprogramming or at least retraining. A general intelligence on the other hand would likely be able to understand many tasks, and indeed quickly learn new ones in a way similar to how humans can. Tau drones definitely fall into the category of general intelligence to some degree, as they can do things like reason and strategize.
Arch, you work(ed) with/on machine learning? Awesome! Machine learning is both one of the most interedting and important yet most ridiculously irritating things humanity has ever created.
No need. Arch is an Alpha Legion fan, that makes him even more likable! But would watch it anyway, we can't get enough of him rumbling about 40k Stuff =D
Hey Arch have you thought about doing a video on Ciaphas Cain? I’ve been listening to what few audiobooks on him have been put out so far and I’m finding it pretty good stuff. Would love to get your take on the guy
Tau will not have "man of iron" Type uprising. In the book "Cybernetica" IT is stated that: The abominal inteligence attacked the human race to halt the coruption of chaos
Talking about engineering society to take maximum care of the drones that are everywhere made me think of the possibility that the Etherials are using them to monitor society for any who aren't wholly working towards the greater good.
The fact that you don’t need to teach this specific drone how to solve a specific task, doesn’t mean that it wasn’t taught to "a" drone once. I thought of it as a combination of learning ,downloading and active controle.
Technically speaking, there are two branches of AI: Logic Trees and Evolutionary Programming Logic Trees: A series of routines, base on predetermine variables, and logic, that tell an AI how to act. For example, the enemies in most video games follow a logic tree; simplifying it a bit, the AI, the actor, constantly sends out a request to all objects on screen, within a certain distance of the actor. Namely, are you an actor? If so, then it sends out another request, are you a player? If so, then it sends out one final request of, can I see you? If so, then it follows a sub routine of when and how to fire on the player. So, a logic tree, typically, can be called an if-tree as well, for obvious reasons. Evolutionary Programming: Via giving the destination, a means to arrive at said destination, and a basic data set, a program "learns" how to best accomplish getting to said destination. For example, the 8 queens problem, how to place 8 queens on a chess board without any queen "checking" another, tends to be the first foray into evolutionary programming. The program tends to follow these steps: 1. Generate a large set of children, that is attempts at reaching the destination. These are generated at random. 2. Test each child to see how "fit," how well it matches the destination, and then give it a score or ranking. 3. If the destination is reach, then spit out that child. 4. If the destination isn't reach, then select the child closest to the destination, and use it as the seed for the next generation. 5. For the next generation, the program keeps the parts of the child that are considered "fit" and randomly generates new parts for the rest of it. Each newly randomly generated part is considered a child of the next generation, and a large amount of them are generated. 6. In addition, a couple of randomly generated children will not use the "best" child of the previous generation as a basis. This is to introduce chaos, and prevent dead ends, or finding sub-optimal solutions. 7. Go to step 2, and repeat till the destination is reached. Evolutionary Programming tends to be the one used for more complicated AI's, though they do use Logic Trees as a basis.
My theory on the tau is that those ethereal guys are somehow linked to zeninch (however the hell you spell that) stone age people have a warp storm open up nearby and then suddenly produce weird guys with gems in thier head who can influence everyone around them that jet propel them into a golden age of technology comparatively overnight by the other races standards. Sounds like a God of change to me.
* some aetherial gets really offended by someone * the aetherial : release... The... WAIFUS! * Massive number of flying body pillows swarms the offender*
So I'm guessing one solution would be to have a laser pointer on the norwegian system to show the invisible line. Then have a limiting factor programed into the thing to tell it if the heat signature is small enough to not shoot at it. Then after that program in a set number of shots so that the program would essentially do this. If I see a heat signature large enough I will shoot 10 times and if the heat signature does not start fading or go away shoot another 10 shots.
I have one problem with the Tau drones: why would they be slower to react when manually operated? The decision tables of such a drone, especially if it has more-true-AI than what we have now, should be executed faster than if an operator is squeezing a trigger on the control panel. This would mean that the self-operating drone is slower in its reaction than: Tau operator brain's lag for decision making + Tau operator's reflex lag + signal transmission lag. That's pretty fucking shit.
Hmm I always found it intresting that after an 'incident', the Tau found an intresting failsafe to 'give drone a personality'. Both to help drones and Tau work together but also as an 'AI' fail safe. Also intresting is they way the Tau view the drone 'Little Helper' being the translation Tau into Gothic. Going off topic but looking to the future, if you consider that the Tau have also been using living Tau to construct vastly more complex AI, such as the the Farsight Commander "Ob'lotai" who is now a full on AI in an XV88 suit... who controls normal drones and issues orders to flesh and blood Tau. And Comander Puretide is now an advanced comander training AI, substantialy more advanced than the initail but failed 'puretide engram chips' used during the latter part of second expansion and inbeded into a Tau comander. What I find a fasanating Possiblity, is that your Battle Suit Tau, could continue to fight even when the Pilot is not there, or is a wrinkled corpse inside the suit. The idea of recovering Battlesuits, repairing them and allowing them to fight on with the AI of there last user having learned from there last mistake might be an intresting way of managing what the Eldar do with solestones in Exarch suits. You could be a Green pilot assigned to a Stormsurge, yet you can perform manuvers and feats of a Vetrain from day one, as the suit helps train you. Should you die and the suit is still operational, it will try to return to your lines for repair and new pilot, or if ordered might stay and fight much like a normal drone (all be it with god like firepower). Just a though. Tau it seems are not unaware of the risks associated with unchecked AI, but they trust there own judgment and all AI programs are the subject of approval from the Etherials and my understanding is they are conservitive. O'yes, Drones do not become slower when not in a hivemind, they are just less able to use advanced tactics, so they will respond slower to a changing battle field but will not be slow at shooting your arse off or dodging incomming fire. Whilst there are no books with specific lore, it is my understanding that entire Auxillury forces have been unleashed using massive comitments of drones, usualy where the enviroment does not suit other assets (ie Kroot, Vespid...) say on an astroid/moon assault. It seems drones are well suited to massive formations, where there network data structures adapt to the volume of the data streams and prioritys allowing quite complete micro and macro stratages. (over seen of course). -P
This video gives me the impression that a Fire Warrior could have a drone with the Tau equivalent of the name ‘Spot’ and the pair actually plays fetch with pulse ammo...
Ronin Joe probably multiple STC’s. No way in hell would they tech up that fast, in a warp storm no less. I don’t care if they’re psychic blanks if you’re in a warp storm you are fucked!
+Riku Morwing STC stands for "Standard Template Construct", which is basically a technology database for distribution with outgoing colonizers during Humanity's Golden Age of Technology. After humanity's dark age, they became awfully valuable. Most of them recovered in 40k are damaged and very fragmentary, thus the need for several of them.
wouldn't it be more impressive than that? more like the dog grabbing your wallet, going down to the local shop and buying the newspaper then coming back with it
