Ive watched it and commented somewhere in the comments. I like 10mm, for an auto cartridge....but its not in the same class as .41 Magnum, Ruger Only .45 Colt, ..much less my .500 JRH 😁
I started my uniformed career in Law Enforcement in 1976. Cutting to the chase LEOs, on the street types like I was, learned early on that the .41 Magnum was NOT suited for us. However, it was not the caliber that was the problem it was the Magnum loading. IF it had been more along the lines of a warm but not magnum loading with a 165 to 185grn SJHP bullet the .41 "Special" would have most likely replaced the .38Spl/.357 Magnum in Officers holsters. I have personal and professional reasons to have a deep distrust of the 9 Minimal from anything other than a submachinegun so I keep the only 9 Minimal pistol I still own in my gun safe where it will probably remain until I'm gone, and The Lovely Bride disposes of it at an estate auction. The .41 never got the chance it deserved and that is a sad reflection on the firearms industry to this day.
I am certain there was a “mid range” loading that was intended for police use that used a lead semi wadcutter at subsonic velocity. The old S&W Model 58 M&P was regulated for this ammunition. It was a forgotten offering by the time I became an officer at the end of the revolver era. I agree it was a good idea but it was an expensive alternative to .357 Magnum/.38 Special offerings not just because of the ammunition.
@@hillbillyscholar8126 There was indeed a "Police" loading for the .41 Magnum. The only problem was that it was loaded to true magnum levels while launching a 200grn LSWC NOT a LSWCHP (that came out later after shine came off the .41)! I owned both a Model 58 in .41 Magnum and a Model 29 in 44 Magnum both with four-inch barrels back then and frankly I came to prefer the 29 over the 58 because even then I had a choice of several bullet styles and the 29 could easily handle the superb .44Spl which itself was an excellent duty round. I have no idea what the firearms people, at Smith and Wesson and ammo manufactures, were thinking when they started campaigning to have Law Enforcement embrace the 41 Magnum without a loading that had more "ooomp" than a .44Spl but less than the full house .41 Magnum. I feel it was that failure that led to the .41 being surpassed by the .357 though revolver frame weight had more than a little to do with it too. The .41 Magnum is an excellent hunting round, and I would not feel under gunned if I were hiking/camping in areas where critters with teeth and claws were wandering about. One revolver I have considered purchasing, but never have for various reasons is/was the Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Magnum. Now that would make for an excellent trail gun sure enough, and if Ruger ever came out with an updated carbine (not the Mini-14) and chambered it in its original .44 Magnum AND .41 Magnum I'd be all over one of each.
I always thought a .44 special loaded with Cor-Bon 165gr JHP would be an excellent police load in a revolver. Hits like a brick but not as much chance of over penetration.
@@1947ramrod I have no experience with the Cor-Bon 165grn JHP load, but I can see its attraction especially if it actually expands. I've long been a fan of LSWCHPs (250 to 255grns) over a (warm) load of Unique or similar powders in the .44Spl revolvers I have owned over the years. I must caution anyone utilizing such loads to stick with large, steel frame revolvers when such loads are fired on a regular basis as recoil can be a deterrent and can beat a lightweight revolver to death. From experience I can tell you that they hit more along the lines of Ford F-250 than a brick. I'm not downing the load you suggested I'm just unfamiliar with it and have a personal and professional liking for heavy, relatively slow-moving bullets in a self-defense handgun. I will make the effort to locate the Cor-Bon loading as the brand has long been a favorite of mine.
41 mag has been one of my favorite cartridges for the last 40 years. I've got a couple of Ruger Blackhawks 6.5" barrels and a S&W model 57. I've taken many deer, hogs and varmints over the years with these three revolvers.
1858 45lc single action EDC here, except when I need to go light and it's an 1849 in 32 S&W. I dropped tactical edc a long time ago when I realized I put rounds on target with single action much better.
Good stuff, thats a fine firearm, 9 times out of 10, im still totin my 4 and 3/4, 45 colt. Shes been my go to for a number of years now, my favorite way to carry it is reverse draw. Some reason reverse draw is actually faster for me then crossdraw and just about on par with standard strong side draw.
Relatively new subscriber. I literally had no awareness of .41mag before this video. Thanks for helping me get more interested in wheel guns and calibers. I want to try .45 LC someday.
I had a buddy that loved the 41. But i found out why when he shot my 44. The little less recoil was where his limit hit. He could use the 41 but the 44 hurt. But the thing as a cop gun. The 41 was tomuch even in the leo loading. But its biggest problem was weight. And remember most cops are not gun people. Its just a tool for the job. And a lot never fire them outside of qualifying. And think that 10mm and 45acp are considered as heavy recoiling rounds.
Carried 357 Mag for my 25 year LEO career even the last 16 when everyone switched to craptastic plastic. After testing it I’ve been carrying my Ruger SP101 3” 327 Fed Mag both city and woods carry the 327 can handle anything 2 or 4 legged that can be a threat in my area. When I go visit my buddy in Montana then the 357 or Redhawk 44 accompany me there.
I retired as a Texas peace officer after 40 years of service. I remember decades ago the San Antonio, Tx police department issued .41 Magnums (S&W model 58's as I recall) to its officers for years. They ran into the same problem that every large department/agency does. Cops come in many different sizes, levels of strength, and skill levels. One size does NOT fit all. Large departments are ONLY interested in what makes things cheaper, easier on the purchasing department, and cheaper. Did I mention cheaper? I believe that SAPD found out that some of their officers couldn't control the .41 magnum and that the ammo was more expensive. They sold them off. I worked from the Houston area, to the San Antonio area, and was blessed to always work for a department small enough to have a common sense policy on duty weapons. To paraphrase: Carry any handgun that you like as long as it 1) is of high quality manufacture, 2) is at least .38 spl caliber, 3) has a barrel length of at least 4 inches, and 4) is one you can qualify with. Of course, you had to buy your own weapon, so the departments got the benefit of cheaply "arming" its officers. My favorite carry revolver was a S&W 28 which I had re-chambered and barreled for .45 Colt. My favorite semi auto was an EAA Witness in 10mm. (much better than my S&W 1006). I only met one other cop in 40 years that carried a .41 magnum as a regular thing.
Have a S&W Mod 57 w/6" bbl. Never shot well with 2400. Switched to Win 296. Shoots like a laser. 210 gr hard cast w/20.5 gr 296. Works great. A very overlooked caliber IMHO.
41 Mag is awesome... Sadly it's the one caliber I don't have. I wish Ruger would have made the 41 Mag in the large frame Ruger Vaquero. I sure would like to see your 41 cross draw carry in action! Thanks for the video...
As you said, just not a whole lot of data out there on .41. It's a fine cartridge, very capable. I dare say it's going to be more pleasant to shoot than the .44mag, with similar penetration and trajectory. If these gun companies weren't so strapped with regs and lousy economies, we'd see a lot more optimized revolver frame sizes coming out, sized per caliber, or offering 5, 6, 7, 8 shot variants of smaller calibers in larger frames. I recon that Blackhawk could nearly run 7 shot in that cylinder without a problem, or just run a smaller frame with less bulk if desired. Here I thought you were lighting your mustache on fire in the first few seconds; didn't see that cigar. Hahaha
In the mid 80’s I started my law enforcement career. I did a lot of research in the 41 magnum as a duty gun. I had a S&W 48 and a 57. The main reason I didn’t go with the 41 over the 357 was two main reasons. 1 the over penetration of the 41 and the weight of the guns. I could definitely get used to that weight, but couldn’t get pass the over penetration of it. Even the so called police rounds over penetrated. If they made a bullet that could deliver the power and stay in the body the 41 magnum would be an incredible force as a man stopper. But ass it is all that power goes out the other side and as more than enough power left to kill an innocent person behind the intended target.
My carry loads are 210 gr XTPs and 170 gr Sierra HP. I'm not overly concerned with over penetration, but I would always consider angles and what's beyond the target.
I have both of the .41 Blackhawks. My favorite handloading caliber. 215g hard cast swc over H110 or 2400. Used to love Blue Dot but the manuals stopped using it some time ago because of some over pressure issues.
My most accurate revolver is my Ruger Blackhawk 41 mag 5-5/8 barrel, it’s an older 3 screw (I’m 78 & I love those 4 clicks). I don’t carry it, I just shoot it for fun, I load it with a 215 gr cast bullet over 7.6 gr of UNIQUE. I own every caliber Blackhawk except 9mm & 10 mm and all except one are 3 screw.
I've still been carryin a Cimarron Model P in 45 Colt since about December of last year when purchased and love it. Might Alternate between SD9VE S&W when i have to change Briches to a cleaner pair when the occasion calls for it, but otherwise I carry my 45 Colt daily.
That’s a lot of hog leg to tote around but it’ll definitely get the job done! I’ve had my S&W 66-2 snub by my side since 1985 carried appendix. Excellent video
Nice gun . I don’t have a 41 but I do have around 370 empty 41 cases and same amount of bullets if you’re looking for some. Most are semi wad cutter’s and 44 are HP
My 2 cents for that fine looking wood. Iffin you have enough wood lends itself well to a personal fit to shiny new stainless 5.5 you acquired. Just a thought that hit me. A touch of custom look. Mountain man
.41 Mag is capable and powerful. But, as I see it, the reason it didn’t take off with police and citizens in popularity is the same reason other 40 Family intermediary rounds did not. That being: technological advancements from more conventional rounds overcame the problem the .41 Mag/.10mm/40S&W/.41 Colt were trying to address. Hollowpoint ammo, increase power charges, lighter or heavier bullets. Also the N frame of the .41 Mag was just a bit more than a lot of LEOs wanted to carry. If you really need more power, most just go to a .44 Magnum.
Very nice and I also love those Ruger Blackhawks !👍 I carry the same version only in .357 and it's stainless steel . I'm amazed how accurate they are as we normally shoot a 75 yards and that firearm will hit where you hold it . I hear ya at 4:10 as we are also seeing more hairy toothed critters (Panther) in rural south Indiana and its just a good idea to have a Blackhawk in reach . Keep up the great work !
I picked up a sw model 57 no dash years ago. Only half a box through it. I have the original box of ammo as well. A nice bucket list wheel gun. I love sw wheelguns. Vintage ones. Not really a colt guy.
Sweet piece. Will an aluminum grip frame on a Blackhawk fit my 5.5" super Blackhawk? I dig the dual tone and would love some rolled edges and custom grips. It would hold up I'm sure, I seldom shoot full powers
Been trying to decide on my next gun, and I can't decide between 45 colt or 41 mag. With the 45 colt, do you have to ream the cylinder for every backhawk or just if you want to load certain ammo? As for the 41 mag, I'm just hoping I can find one lol. Never seen one down here.
so you carry reloads ? everyone says NO! but if you are keeping a batch for the D.A. and they are powder charged uniformly and to a decent spec, i.e. not using weird projectiles or trex loads, i dont see the issue ? i mean, my coffee table gun has kieths in it, someone wants in my living room, then get some reloads delivered. what if you were at the range, have target reloads and had to use your pistol - "oh wait, let me switch out my ammo for factory critical defense right quick" :-) i do love the look of that 41. i found some 44-40 starline and now shopping for an outlaw model. i doubt i'd be getting rid of my 44's for a 41 or 460sw, but maybe tempted to find a 41 or 480 ruger as one off's. happy shooting.
@@plowboysghost ordering some 41 starline cases today. just in case i buy a revolver. i secured some 44-40 unicorn brass the other week too, new starline. figure with elections coming up, need to get some extra brass, primers, projectiles to see me thru the next 4 years.
Good Video, I have been wanting a Smith and Wesson Model 57 “classic” in a 6 inch barrel for carry since seeing your no-Dash 57…. Do you still have that gun and carry it much?
Did you ever settle on a mould in .41 for cast boolits? I picked up a Lyman 410459 but have not had a chance to try them out yet. Also any thoughts on .41 Special? would like to find some brass and give that a go also...I'm running this out of a no dash Smith model 58 old service revolver. THANK YA
Im not aware of any 41 mag rifles ever made. It would be interesting to see what kind of performance you get out of a 41 mag with a 16.5 inch barrel and no cylinder gap.
I pair a United sporting arms Seville in 41 mag with 6.5 inch barrel for deer season with my Henry it's a Ruger copy it's 1 of 59 made in tombstone AZ.
@@plowboysghost I think a pipe has some really good things going in its favor. For starters, it's definitely cheaper than cigars on a smoke by smoke basis. I can go to a tobacco shop and get a pinch to try, or a big ole bag, and even a small bag will last a looooong time compared to a pack of cigars. I will get way more for the cost of a pack of cigars. Next is convenience, I can pack a small bowl for a quick toke, or load it up and smoke for a long session. And, If I have to stop for some reason the taste isn't affected like having to relite a cigar. Next is the variety Tobacco available....there are tons of flavors, strengths, and blends to choose from. And Finally, you get to pick from all kinds of shapes and colors for your own personal taste. Pipes can be as simple as a corn cob, or very ornate with beautiful carvings and inlays. You can have one pipe you smoke for life, and even pass it down as a family heirloom, just like Grampa Plowboy...lol. You can cherish a pipe for years to come, and they are very durable. I've taken mine camping, hiking, and even hunting many times without issue. And lastly, My wife loves the aroma when I smoke my pipe, and would not let me smoke a cigar inside...😂😂😂
Plowboy, Thanks for another great video. How do you carry extra ammo when toting your Blackhawks around? I have the same holster you do and a Triple K cartridge belt, but don't always feel it appropriate to wear the whole rig. If you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Have a great weekend!
Get yourself a snuff can or repurpose an empty .22 cal pellet tin with the screw on lids from Crosman ( 500 count tins are roomy enough for 5 or 6 .41 mags I bet) I load paper cartridges for my edc 3rd gen Colt 1860, I use them because they fit easy into a back pocket and they're waterproof to a certain extent which doesn't matter to y'all but it's imperative that I keep my powder dry so that's my suggestion. They work fine. Plowboy always brings the class and wisdom to any wheel gun conversation. Take care.
I’m thinking of converting my Blackhawk convertible 10mm/40 to 10mm magnum just so I can have something close to the 41 magnum, I know it’s a bit of a wildcat round but so is 41 magnum
I can't advise on 10mm beyond factory loaded stuff...but I can tell you that .41 Magnum is a SAAMI recognized cartridge since the mid 1960's...not a wildcat.
Forgive me if I've forgotten, but have you chrono'd that load? I'm interested to know what kind of energy an every day carry fighting .41 Magnum achieves vs bear country loads. Thanks. PS: that polished grip frame and trigger guard still look great--kind of like those old-timey silver-plated Colts.
I need to pick me up another 41 mag Blackhawk. I wish I had never traded mine but way back when I had it many moons ago I didn’t reload yet. What kind of cigar?
Hey Plowboy Im looking for a single action wheel gun that can shoot 9mm and so Im looking at the Ruger Blackhawk Convertible and some Taylors guns chambered in just 9mm I have a Heritage 22 that I love and Im used to the Loading Procedure of that Gun. so do you think the More modern way the Blackhawk works is better then the more Traditional way of Loading? I might just be splitting Hairs. But the Ruger Convertible People say online that they might be Inaccurate when using the 9mm Cylinder. I don't know if that's true. what do you Think? I like the 357 Magnum too but I think 9mm might be cheaper to shoot.
I had quite a few thoughts floating in my dome during this presentation but I suppose the first thing I would ask is why an XTP? They are good hunting bullets in the .41 if you like the JHP for such things but may not behave on, uh, “hominids”. If you insist on full power why not an old school SJHP or LSWC at more modest velocity like the original police loading?
I have the JHP in there for town. I have hundreds more of my cast loads...a NOE H&G 258 Keith mold clone ..which is what I'll be hunting deer with this coming season from my scoped .6.5" BH I also have older style Hornady HP loaded, as well as some Speer.....for social work.
Just thinkin’ mr. plowboysghost, someone might just start making more .41 mags, but it will be someone like Magnum Research in a semi-auto which will get rid of the 10mm fanboys, but then you will have a whole gaggle of firehouse fanboys who still do not understand the value of a well crafted revolver and actual practice and hand loading….LOL, just sayin’
