Wonderful to hear about this project. I live in Andalucía, teach permaculture design and love creating a small piece of paradise here.... Just one suggestion for you: those mimosas may be "invasive" to the area, but, as pioneer legume plants, they are doing a critical ecosystem function in those abandoned woods where they grow. I would suggest keeping at least some of them as a support species, in other words, as "nurse plants" for whatever else you want to cultivate in there (native species, I am assuming... or perhaps a food forest in some of the area?) . In ecosystems that have been degraded and then abandoned, they are the "hard-working immigrants" in the great natural process of ecological succession. (I lived for years in Galicia, where they are abundant, as well). The ones you decide to keep can be chopped and dropped in place to provide ground cover and to feed the soil, accelerating the succession process. This is a good strategy, especially in humid climates such as the one you are in. I will follow your channel and do wish you all the best!

I was thinking the same thing Linda. It would be a good idea to leave many of them in place and use them to help protect and sustain the replacements in a gradual process. Regarding the mass tree planting plan elsewhere, it would pay to think about some permaculture design (e.g swales) first rather than random planting (if that was the idea?). Swales are "on contour" tree-growing systems that help keep as much water as possible soaking into your land. It's not always going to be as wet as your first year!! Great project, good energy, all the best with it.

I know animals can over graze and now they have a border they could use a fence around it all and I know that there are some negative impacts sometimes to having animals to clear things out too. Could be as simple as they don’t want to. That’s fair enough, owning an animal can come with some gross tasks that majority of people don’t want to deal with. The manure would help the soil as well

as a student of ecology, nature conservation and planing of landuse, i would recommend as first step you should be monitoring this little creek exactly. that means looking from where does the water come from, where it goes, how is the water quality, which biotopes are affected, which plants grow near the stream and which animals (macrozoobenthos) are actually living in the water. based on this data, you can male plans on what to do (or not). water ecosystems are in general highly sensitive to changes. even little human influence can cause big impacts to large sized lands and biotopes near around. in germany we have basic manuals for 'renaturating' water ecosystems. don't know if there is something like that in portugal. Good Luck for your project, love to watch the progress:)

I lived on a farm briefly which had an initial large dam that via a small knee high waterfall style overflow fed into a larger dam, more like a lake really, as it had a small central island with a feature tree that you could canoe in! That lake fed to a few smaller water sources/dams, the last basically a pond but it still had yabbies. Goats were used to keep introduced blackberry bushes and non-native grasses from choking the natural spring that fed the 1st dam and larger lake, in addition to annual rainfall filling it. Using goats in this way was featured in a paper about farming in Western Australia as it was quite progressive around 2001-2003, (so many years ago 😂). It was considered a mutually beneficial relationship then too!

One general advice for your plannings would be to think in terms of "circular" and "resilient" systems, which are very related to permaculture principles. By "circular", one would mean to actively observe how your land is already, "naturally" working by itself. Water course, topography, vegetation spreading, wildlife, and so on. Once you get a good understanding of how it works, then it's time to look at how to "improve" it. Be it either enhancing some benefit you seek, of reducing some inconvenience that un balances your and/or your land's system. Minor changes can lead to major evolutions, so start small, and with a correct understanding of what your planning would induce and imply. By "resilient", one would mean to "strengthen" the existing state by multiplying "alternatives", the main goal being a "diversity" big enough to cover multiple scenarios, whily still being respectful of and adapted to your land's existing conditions. Please note that, as a landscape architect who's not knowledgeable at all with Portugal's climate, soil and vegetation, I wholeheartedly recommend a biologist and/or environmentalist's point of view, opinion and knowledge, out of sheer caution and humility.

An idea for the swamp? (not sure what to call the piece of water at the near end of the video), a way to get rid of the moss is to take away excess nutrients such as nitrites and phosphates. They boost algea growth and kill off sunlight at the bottom of the lake (no photosynthesis aka oxygen). Because decomposing bacteria in the lake use oxygen to kill off dead algea the lake gets these things called deadzones and most if not all life can be killed. There try take away any extra nutrients (said above) and try convert the place into a larger form of a aquaponic. It would neutralise or slow down of algea growth from the plants growing, and fish waste would be transformed into amonium->nitrates usable food for a plant. This is a little bit of a ramble but seriously, its a good source of terrestrial food in combination with aquatic food because the plant, as well as the food can be eaten after!

I just recently came across your channel and I am so happy! I honestly only saw the last 2 videos of season one when I found your channel whilst researching recycled plastic for roofing, and I never noticed any issues with your music 😂 Your new music is excellent though, you can’t go wrong with banjos and folksy vibes. I so admire your goals and passion. I’m from Western Australia and my father bought 200 hectares of what was previously farmland, so almost devoid of native flora and fauna and major salinity issues over 25 years ago. We took advantage of a Government incentive that helped us buy 10,000 native trees that we, as a family, hand planted (what a task!). We were able to see the return of wildlife and native plants and a crowning glory was a Wedge Tail Eagle nesting on our property. My Dad was ahead of his time! Unfortunately, he fell seriously ill with cancer and my other family sold the property - devastated as it was such an education in my early 20’s and my 1st, now 25 yr old & 3rd son, and a place of solace and a sanctuary for my Dad. We had an old transportable (a slight step up from a shipping container as it had a window, sliding by door, walls, floor and source of shelter summer and winter) but no electricity, plumbing or running water. My Dad’s favourite part of the land was a grove of native trees that survived ring barking 80 odd years prior and he was recognised with a Land for Wildlife plaque for all the native species returning under his care. So this channel is pretty close to home and my Dad will enjoy it too (he beat cancer, and is our ‘miracle man’). Thank you.

Great stuff you are doing. Freeing yourself up to do more of the doing, rather than trying to film and do at the same time, is a master stroke. With such great episodes and narration, you should be able to boost your subscribers and supporters, and that way fund a lot more of your ideas. About the way you learn about your land, its potential and the best way to manage it, maybe watching Project Granja Caimito in Andalucia might be interesting for you. The actual land use is totally different - they are using animal husbandry to regenerate a degraded 'dehesa' (oak trees and pasture) landscape. But it's interesting as they are doing things incrementally, and there is a lot of observation of the ecosystems and developing their plan gradually. Your plan looks much more labour intensive, so you can speed things up a lot, but the learning by observing, in particular, seeing what works and what doesn't, and building from that, seems like a good way to go with things like what to do with the creek, the wooded areas, the ones with invasive species, etc.

Dave Hakkens killed 'Dave Hakkens': the other channels are no longer only Dave's but are now under the group name 'One Army'. RIP Dave: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OxJjMt_Eu5A.html you might know all this already, but it's important to realize that a shift in intention (towards becoming more cooperative, team-focused) brings with it some minor limitations (including potentially forfeiting some admin/marketing privileges). having said that, i don't think there is a lack of attention for this project. maybe it's better to have organic growth that has really committed and interested people joining (either using/copying Project Kamp or joining directly) as the exchanges are richer and deeper. artificially doing marketing/spreading the word might dilute that?
@bobweiram6321
@bobweiram6321 2 года назад
@@jeroenboom8 Interesting point. Please allow me to address them. First, the subscriber count is lower than expected for a channel of such high quality content and production. 10K in revenue is nice, but it should be much higher. It should be well into the 600K subscribers. I subscribe to all of Dave's channels but didn't find this channel until it appeared on my feed. Second, the growth of the channel in terms of views and subs turns into revenue, which turns into more funding for the project without much work or without fatiguing donors or inadvertently creating competition for donors among the projects. Third, Dave's original mission is already fragmented out into other similar projects. It could be argued that it's already diluted. Even so, I presume there's already a supportive relationship among the One Army. There's really no such thing as organic growth any more than "build it and they'll come." Along with his past accomplishments, Dave's personality and his easy going yet highly polished presentation is what this channel really launched itself on. Finally, it would be a terrible mistake to position this channel's primarily for people who are committed and interested in the Project Camp. I think it's easy to forget how powerful RU-vid has become. It's safe to say the vast majority of the audience are people who are neither committed nor interested in the project, but watch it for entertainment. It's really a reality show where we vicariously participate in creating project camp. The mere fact that so much time and resources are invested on developing the content demonstrates that Dave understand's the importance of expanding the audience.

Wow !! Came across this project randomly, good luck , I’m building an Aquaponics farm in East Africa and our main workshop is 2x40ft containers with a span roof between them definitely the way to go ! One suggestion for your swamp / water reservoir build a proper dam up stream at the highest point on your land , run a drop pipe from it down stream and use a ram pump to pump water up to your reservoir for free , then run an overflow back to the river down stream , this way you have a constant flow of fresh oxygenated water flowing through it as well as a constant level in the pond , add a diving board and your “pool” is done !!
