VICE News I think the one person that needs to get deported ASAP is the founder of VICE news. A Canadian Communist who constantly is putting out misleading anti-American propagandist news pieces to indoctrinate their mostly young American audiences. What I don't understand is why someone has to go through this just because "that's the way it is". Once he's able to prove that he is now a working man, capable and stable; who's lived his entire life in the US and has a family who depends on him, wouldn't it be reasonable to let him stay? So, when he was 3 and didn't know english it was up to him to know what immigration paperwork to submit? The first family who adopted him and gave him up 6 years later or the organization who facilitated his adoption should have done the paperwork properly. He was shuffled around and ABUSED. How was it his fault shity adults didn't submit the proper paperwork when he was 3? THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN CASES AREN'T LOOKED INTO. And we treat everyone like trash wholesale. This is not right! Also, why would he have had any inclination that the paperwork wasn't done properly? I think we all assume adopted or not that the adults in our early lives filed all necessary paperwork for us correctly. Yes the system just treats Adam like a statistic. The law is rigid on immigration and deportation if you're an illegal alien in US and commit a felony, but his situation is absolutely unique on several levels..it comes down to negligence by the US government to ensure he was properly registered and cared for in the US foster-care system and child immigration program they established with Korea, in a war the US was instrumental in resulting in many homeless and parentless children.. I think he has a case for appeal which could be taken all the way to the US Supreme Court..the American public needs to get behind him in large numbers, make their voices heard to the President, and the wheels of justice will turn for Adam and his family.

It shows serious failings in the adoptive care system in America and the program US had setup with South Korea due to the US Korean war leaving many children without parents. He should have been properly registered as a US citizen from the very start and his adoptive parents monitored and his well-being and welfare properly monitered by the US authorities. Instead, he was left in an appalling abusive home and not registered as a citizen which was a legal duty of his adoptive parents. There are a lot of people unfortunately who abused (and still abuse) the foster-care system in US by taking in lots of children to get money from the government. They're not fit to be parents and often abuse the children as in this case. They basically use children as commodities to get free money and have no interest in the well-being of the children or in parenting.

once i heard they hadn't done the paperwork I knew it was intentional if the family ended up not wanting to keep the child, as if Adam was not a human to them. If someone is adopting and all the paperwork to maintain stability (aka citizenship) is not completed that should be seen as a red flag. During an international adoption process if feels intentional to "forget" to fill out citizenship. It's almost like the family had an idea of what they wanted but were unwilling to accept the individuality of Adam/any other kid they would have gotten so they wanted a back up plan.

As an abused child, his life was pre-destined from the start towards a troubled life in adulthood and put him on a path towards deportation because his adoptive family didn't register him as a legal citizen..it's so sad and inhumane to be separated from his children and wife and everything he knows, his culture and country is American. Terrible injustice and negligence by two governments towards the care and legal status of a child. And now he, and his children, are paying the price.

I think this can be sorted out if enough people are prepared to help Adam. What he needs is massive public support from American's, 100,000's or millions of letters to the President to review his case and grant him a pardon and allow him to return on a Visa with a path towards legal citizenship..and if that doesn't work, a crowd-funder so he can legally challenge deportation at the US Supreme Court on the grounds its inhumane to separate him from his children and for gross negligence by the American and South Korean governments in their responsibility towards him as an adopted parentless child the US agreed to care for and failed miserably resulting in an abused and traumatised child. That is ultimately likely what caused him to have problems in adulthood and commit the felonies that got him deported. The system failed him, and he pays the price by losing his life in America, children and wife? It's not right. America is supposed to represent liberty and equal justice for all.

If you google his name and click the "Batara Immigration Law" page, you'll see that he has met his birth mother, who gave him up because she was single, poor, and disabled. The two meet up every few months, but have difficulty communicating, as he speaks very little Korean (presumably only what he has learned since being deported) and she speaks no English

And ontop of that, the US has been deporting people over technicalities for years regardless of whether they break the law or not, some of them even after they served in the military.

I agree! My ex-boyfriend beat me up, was caught with heroin and meth, and got out on bail. While out on bail, he was caught at a known drug house. He again had meth and heroin, baggies and a scale, which is possession with intent to distribute. He got less than three years and got released today. He should have received over 25 years according to the law, but the prosecutor gave him this unbelievable plea deal. Smh

Upon further investigation, he is now living in Mexico City with his wife and seems to be doing very well for himself. I found his Instagram account.

I thought if you have served in the US military (even as a non-citizen) because you take an oath of allegiance to the United States of America, that's the same as becoming an American citizen. Elvis Presley's manager Colonel Tom Parker was from Netherlands and never legally registered as an American citizen, but served in the US military. After Elvis death, he found himself in court over a legal wrangle relating to an earnings contract with the Elvis Presley estate which Elvis's family challenged and it also involved federal income tax. And Parker used as his legal defence, that because he was not a legal US citizen, some US laws didn't apply to him. However, the Presley estate attorney's argued that since he had served in the US Navy and had taken an oath of allegiance to the United States of America, it was the same as becoming a US citizen. I'm not 100% sure it does now and think you do have go through the legal process of becoming a naturalised American citizen by filing the paperwork and getting formally accepted as a US citizen. Nevertheless, the fact Parker took the oath and served in the US military did definitely have some legal bearing on the lawsuit as I recall in federal court, at least at that time in the early 1980s.

That doesn't change the fact that as a child, through no choice of his making, he was brought to this country and raised as an American, fully assimilated to his parent's culture and country. The fact that THEY didn't sign the right papers when he was a child isn't his fault and I just think his citizenship should have been automatic when he was adopted. Sending him to a country he doesn't know, doesn't understand, has no connection to, basically destroying his life is cruel and unusual punishment. If he had been an intentional illegal immigrant, it would have been justified but he didn't even know.

I don't think most people who are adopted from another country would even think to check their immigration status, they would probably think that if they're adopted by a US citizen, it makes them US citizens just like their biological children would be. His citizenship was never in question until he got arrested. I just think deporting him to a country he knows nothing about is excessive

He could have changed his situation long before he was told to leave. He knew there was a problem long before he turned 18. Each of us is responsible for our own lives. No, he did not choose to be here. Though, if he'd remained in Korea it was very possible that he wouldn't be alive at all. He should count his blessings. Yes, his adopted parents had the responsibility to take care of the paperwork. Because this wasn't done, it sounds like something screwy was going on, this sort of thing doesn't happen without reason. He didn't do it until he was pushing middle age. That's to bad, he broke the law and ignored it until it was far to late. It's not your fault, it is not mine, the responsibility for his life and the choices he made.....are entirely his. Sounds like you feel strongly about this subject. You should contact him and see what you can do to help his cause. Maybe you can find out why he was adopted by a USA family without the proper paperwork from Korea or the USA. .

He was a victim of his adoptive families neglect. If there was a true justice system, the initial adoptive paperwork would have been filed and he would have become a US citizen. Insult was added to injustice when he was convicted of a crime for trying to get his only belongings from an abusive family. For those that said he knew since he was 18, well his adoptive family knew before that and didn't fix it. In addition, what 18 yo knows how to navigate the legal maze around immigration law. I was adopted too, from “love the children.” Stories like this hit so hard bc I’m truly no different from Adam. A lot of adoptive parents in the US are abusive. Russia even imposed an adoption ban on the US after several Russian adoptees were killed by their US parents.

Dude - I went to college and took Korean for 1 year. Later, I had multiple private tutors. And my Korean still sucks and wouldn't make it on my own without help in Korea. And places in Korea don't hire anyone off the street for English teachers.
