Today I deal with Mr Hole and I also discover the rather poor state of my diesel. Luckily I have Joe here to sort it. If you need your diesel sorting then call Joe Hone on 07787 907 739
Thanks for watching

I agree with taking the t and g down so you can fully replace all of the electric cabling to give you peace of mind that everything is safe. Plus it will look so much better. You really are cracking on with getting so much done. Youre right to remove the back walls, flooring and replacing it. It gives you the opportunity to clean out the water tank properly without too much bother. Thank goodness you didn’t find anything to worry about like with sloe patrols floor. It’s going to look fantastic when it’s all done 🤗

Hi James. Couple of things. After watching many narrow boater vlogs, before you get carried away ripping out, the radiators. Some are saying the extra thin rads are not good for decent heat and have swopped them to the thicker ones like you have already. Secondly, the new coal fire, do you not think it would be better in the middle of the boat other than by the doors, for overall more heat. Thirdly, if you are still going to Crick, I,m sure you will find more ideas and hopefully may save you a bob. Canice Bannon, on his rusty Dutch Barge, has great info on rusty insides, and rust prevention. Anyway, all the best James .
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
Good stuff in there. Yep I know double rads hold more heat - I’ll thinking still about that. I can’t really put it there for design reasons although im not 100% on that yet. Yeah I watch him and his boats - lastly I don’t think it’s possible to save a bob or two at Crick !! Seen the cost of rope and a sausage sandwich there !!! Thanks pal

James, could it be that the water tank needs to be on a small angle to ensure that most of the water can be drawn out when the water circuit is run? If the tank is level, it looks like about one inch of water will remain standing where as on an angel, it looks like maybe only a gallon will be standing.
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
That is something I’ll look into maybe - I might investigate the tank itself if it ever drains
@peterthebricky

@Wyrm1701 Год назад
Apart from diesel that has been stored for a long time, supermarkets are notorious for selling dubious diesel. They aren't nearly as fussy about input sources as the big dedicated petrol stations are, and they also do not put additives into their diesel but instead sell it straight as it comes from the refinery. That unfortunately means you get a mixture of fossil diesel and biodiesel, and the latter is much more prone to holding onto water. So, if you're going to store diesel for any amount of time, put a combined detergent, cetane booster and biocide into the mix. For storing it for lesser amounts of time, just the detergent and cetane booster will do. The detergent dissolves water in diesel and makes life much more difficult for diesel bug; the cetane booster improves the burn rate of the diesel.

Looks good there under the door, reckon stripping it all out was the right move so you'll know its all good. Plus you can get at the water tank as well which is a rare bonus. Wonder if the water pump was maybe the source of the damp rather than hole in the roof? the T&G isnt hugely stained and rotten nor is the wall. Youre making good progress though so keep up the good work.

need to drain tank and run a pressure hose wand into tank from the diesel pump. Spray down all the inside and discard fould diesel wash and sludge. The filtering while nice , doesnt eliminate the accumulated gunk on tank walls and top, you would be amazed. No matter old timer still did good work filtering the sump. Id have gone farther though, very least run a GIANT medium mesh diesel truck filter 1st in line , for one year afterwards.Tto catch the remaining material that gets loose.

@rowancrafts
@rowancrafts Год назад
You may have already explained but as a new subscriber I'm still catching up, why are you putting the stove on the other side? I would have thought that ballast and the hole in the roof would have meant leaving it would have been a factor in replacing it back on the port side. I'm enjoying seeing your enthusiasm, keep the videos coming.

Lighting; you don’t have to remove the ceiling. Run warm white LED tape down both corners where the walls meet the roof. Make a trough for it to sit in so that the light washes across the ceiling. I can draw you a detail if you want.

Instead of using the plunge tool on the floor, use a 18 or20v circular saw and set depth to 18mm. Much quicker than hacking away with that tool. Given the rot, I would remove the entire floor to check the joists and rustproof paint the hull. Then use 18mm WPB plywood for your floor if joists are ok. Your floor is knackered if it feels spongy along any section, and complete replacement is necessary - good luck
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
The whole first section is bad and will be replaced - the rest seems fine and I’ll investigate it all - every inch

good job on the diesel bug, always good to sort that as it will wear down the engine. Do plastic water tanks need lagging? I think maybe a thermal blanket would be wise! Definitely take it out to clean and reseal the connections. I would take all the walls and T&G down and rewire just for piece of mind. Replace EVERY bit of wiring so you know where you are.
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt
I don’t think the walls contain any electrics so I might be ok. Skies water tank isn’t lagged and she’s dry as a bone. It’s insulated all around which may help. Excellent you agree to remove the t and g

Re the engine set up. Kindly suggest replacing the submerged Tecnodrive gearbox with Newage 150. Bigger gearbox more suitable to pushing project 58 along the canal. ( Can be fitted to the Vetus ) Also replace all engine mounts as they last about 10 years. Also whilst welder there fit plate across the swim to the hull between gearbox and stern bearing after cutting propshaft. To plate fit aquadrive or python drive. Then prop thrust is pushing the boat along via this plate. This results in far less wear to stern bearing, gearbox and engine mounts. The engine mounts are not pushing the boat along and the gearbox will last almost forever. Only a suggestion. Very enjoyable vlogs.

Can cars get diesel bug?
@WhiskeyGulf71
@WhiskeyGulf71 Год назад
What a total scam ! Diesel bug does indeed form in diesel fuel tanks but only in the water that collects from condensation OR water that was in the fuel when sold. All that needs to happen is the fuel is left to settle, the water will always fall to the bottom along with the debris. This is then drained off as polluted water, the fuel can then be warmed & filtered. The cheaper option is to have a fuel separator & two stage filter system fitted to the existing fuel system. The way to prevent condensation is to keep the fuel tank full as much as possible throughout the winter. It’s also possible to run a heating pipe through the fuel tank that heats the fuel from the engine cooling system, this will evaporate any in fuel moisture.

I didn’t say it MUST be in the middle - I said ideally it would be but I also said that sometimes having at the fore bulkhead is the only option for layout purposes. Arguably it’s the best use of the space and fire proofing at the fore bulkhead but worse for heat distribution.
