To stop the holes filling up with clay you could countersink them and fit the shortest flathead screw you can find. Edit: or an index screw - you don't even have to countersink...

Good idea! 👏🏻

Amaco/Brent offers the "Adapt-A-Batt". Another option is masonite batt w/masonite inserts. To each his own. Keep sharing your videos!

I knew. I have a better one which is custom made with a large aluminum bat.

Thanks for showing your method. I did this with a Shimpo wheel head, and you don’t need to tap a thread, simply use a nut on the bottom of the pin. I used hex bolts with a 1/4” inch head. I think 3/8” head is too big. Thanks for your excellent videos and throwing expertise. Steve. UK.

I know you don’t need to tap the threads. If you cut short of the bat pins, they are quite easy to set them up when you have the threads. I am sure you can get smaller pins, but I just don’t bother to find them since I already have the standard bat pins (4 of them). 1/4” or 3/8’ holes do matter to me that much, as long as they serve the function!

Would the nut even be necessary? I think we could just drop in the pin, and the wheel torque would hold the bat in place.

Thank you for your idea. But I wonder if a thread (or wing-nut) is necessary to hold the pin in the bat. Could we just drop in the pin? I think the 90-degree torque would hold the wheel in place. Any thoughts? Thank you!

You don’t need the threaded holes. Simply drill 2 pin holes should work and it’s much easier.

Was thinking that there may be a rubber flat topped plug that would fit the new holes when not in use. The wheel area around the new holes could be counter sunk to allow for the top portion of the plug.

If you throw using bats every time, you probably don’t need to worry the clay sinking in the holes.

Your original bat pins just slide in and out. Do you have to have them tapped? I attach small bats with a clay pad. Sometimes I want to use other bats but my holes don’t really screw very well anymore. I’ve seen some videos where some potters just slip them in and out. Did the threads just wear out or can you just drill the threads out? Does that make the bats wobble? Sorry for the long message but this has bothered me for a long time

The original pin holes doesn’t come with pre-threaded. In this demo, I purposefully put the thread in the holes and that’s my personal preference.

Why not take a large bat and fix machine screws to that in the appropriate place to take the smaller bats? That way you will not create so many holes in the wheelhead.

I don’t know if you notice from my previous videos when I used the smaller bats. I sure have the bat adapter long time ago. I am just providing an alternative way to convert the wheelhead for people who are looking for an adapter.

I think the title should be "bed" not "bats". Bats are small flying animals at night.

No, bats are for hitting baseballs.
