Like pendant support? ..... or even keyboard support? Bloody painful to only have a touchpad hitting virtual buttons in a manufacturing environment... How about toolchanging? M6? Ha! Just askin'... Keep safe, y'all!

Duet3 update would be awesome , building a 4'x8'x1' cnc using a vfd and a water cooled spindle with dual y sensors and having a hell of a time setting it up plus i would love this web interface incorporation

I just got the Duet3 which I think you would really appreciate, as its got a lot more cnc specific updates to the board along with a lot more power capability. Currently there is no direct ooznest specific overlay, but this one seems to have some form of vfd spindle Output, alongside up to 6 x 6a (peak) motors and canbus allows I creasing it to 24! But so many pins and updates. I just need to try and learn how to customise it more. As I would love to do what you have with the 2x Y axis proximity sensors. As I'm getting fed up of the standrd ooznest spring switches breaking. Thank you for all these updates as you have given me the confidence to start my own cnc scratch build. As I think my workbee isn't up for what I thought it was for.
@EducatingSavvas
@EducatingSavvas 4 года назад
Yes the VFD spindle enable was something I had suggested in the forum. My solution on RRFv2 was to edit the post processor on the CNC software - I've still yet to update the firmware to version 3. In the new year I'll save to buy the new controller and mock something up, but first I need to finish the manual. Do you use the belt or lead-screw machine? And what are you cutting?

@@EducatingSavvas I have a workbee lead screw machine, 1000x1000. I bought it just to have the experience of building something like this. But realised fairly quickly I couldn't do the kind of work that earns me my money on it. Its still one foot too many into the hobby side for where I want to be. The next chassis I have designed is radically stiffer and probably at least 5x the weight as I want that added mass to dampen vibrations and give me a fair crack at some semi decent aluminium machining. I want to move up to some 4+ amp motors and potentially play with gearing them, not sure if it will really do much but I want to run rack and pinion as I haven't really loved the lead screw setup with the 8mm rods whipping away. Genuine hiwin rails are the next on the list to order. As for me I want to be able to machine 3D solid acrylic block at a fine resolution. And for me repeatability is the key. The duet 3 seems really nice, although as per all these things, the Costs are all adding up. When I pre ordered it, I didn't realise that It would be a pain tk get running without the raspberry pi.. So another £60 on top.

@EducatingSavvas 4 года назад
@@lasercut.london549 I've not used the workerbee but 1 meter is large for 8mm lead screws. I think the nutblock can be improved, on the openbuild system, and you can't run it fast and need lower feeds it get good results. That said I went form belt, to lead-screw to ball-screw for the drive mechanism to get the results at the speeds I needed. So is there not a standard web interface like the Duet 2?
@lasercut.london549
@lasercut.london549 4 года назад
@@EducatingSavvas the interface is very similar to the ooznest, mostly due to the ooznest bejng a modification of the duet interface. I have had success porting some of the ooznest settings over to the machine. But I'm still waiting on an email back to see if they can supply some nema 23 motors that will max out the power capabilities of the board. The peak is 6.3a but I think 4.3a will be a good compromise. But ooznest only show up to 3a currently. I was looking at balls crew. And I have not ruled them out. But ideally rack and pinion due to wanting to keep it to a set size and keep all motors centred around the gantry. The potential to change the gearing to the rack easily intreagues me.
@Levisgil47
@Levisgil47 4 года назад
@@EducatingSavvas So you mean that It's possible to replace the lead screw by a Ball screw inside the 2080 Cbeam rail or the workbee ? 8mm would be a maximum...and haven't heard of 8mm Ball screws.

Well that was my first set up. I guess I just liked that I could customise how the duet worked. It felt like I was learning a lot about programming in the process. I'll still keep my GRBL setup as a back up.

Nice overview. Clearly it's based on DuetWebControl 2. The original does contain shortcuts for the macro folder on the right of the dashboard view so it's a shame that's been removed. It's not a configurable list as such, more of a compact view of the macros directory whilst in the dashboard. It shouldn't be too difficult to restore that if you wanted, it's all open source. Despite the grbl release, I think you're still better off with Duet. RepRapFirmware 3 is incoming and brings further improvements. Conditional GCode is also coming which it seems will be incredibly powerful.
@EducatingSavvas
@EducatingSavvas 4 года назад
Yes I should have made that more clear it's based on the original. I was surprised they took the marcros away from that section but overall it's much better suited to CNC use. GRBL's still has some benefits, pause and resume is a lot more responsive. I still haven't moved to the new version - it feels like it'll be a bit of work re-writing everything and I'm still working on my assembly manual.

This is overwhelming for a complete CNC beginner such as myself who is stuck with the original Duet controller which is already a nightmarte to learn to use! This video seems to complicate issues with alien language rapidly spoken (!!!!!) and therefore becomes gobbledygook when you seem to be demonstrating your superior knowledge in revealing the shortcomings of this Duet upgrade! Why are there no online BASIC TUTORIALS on using Duet CNC?!
@EducatingSavvas
@EducatingSavvas 3 года назад
At it's heart the Duet platform is for 3D Printing so it is a work in progress being developed for CNC applications. This video is quite old and the firmware has developed. I'm now using RRF 3.3.0 with the newest web interface. The duet website is the best source for instructions for setting up.

Great. My Thanksgiving holiday only needs a This Old Tony Video to have all my favorites! Well, I don't know if I can count Marius Hornberger anymore. He seems to not post as much any more. I'm sure he'll do a holiday video sometime soon. I am very interested in this. My MPCNC has an Archim 2.0 controller and I run Marlin with CNCjs to control. Works ok, but the duet is getting some energy.
@EducatingSavvas
@EducatingSavvas 4 года назад
He's young and probably busy with real life. The You Tube stuff really takes it out of me - it's a miracle I put anything out tbh. Archim 2.0 look good - I think I have a old controller from a 3D Printer I took apart - might look into that for a demonstration model. Duet is a lot easier to work with though.

Does grbl support tool change? Last i checked it didn't. I'm using black box controller on one machine and geko on my other with mach3 which supports it

I haven't looked into tool changing on GRBL but this web interface is for the duet board which uses the reprap firmware. I think tool changing will work on the duet though - with some work.

Oh man! I think you mentioned you also use an XYZ touch probe plate ? I have been needing to use one so badly but wasn’t sure how to get it working with duet (how to wire it up) and what config settings to get that type of homing to work on Duet! So sorry to bother you / just realized how packed of useful information this video was and that you’re basically the guy I’ve been looking for that has gotten these things working on duet for CNC use! Any way to also share or talk about using a XYZ homing plate woth the duet / share code and how or where you wire it up to (I don’t know if just a normal axis ends top plug location would work as then how do you let it know to set the ... differing Axes Zeros if you use say the ... Extruder 0 ensstopnplug) - Just any help would be great! If able to see this I could give you contact info possibly if I can figure out how to send RU-vid messages from phone * lol Many thanks!

Hey I noticed you have a “U” Axis appear after homing. I assume this is because you are doing independent homing of the two Y axis motors / thus the virtual “U” axis is needed. I’m trying to do the same thing if that’s what you have done and was having a bit of trouble I’m not sure why :/. Is there anyway I could checkout your config files that deal with the homing procedure for that? I’m just trying to have it double check either at the end or start if each job that the two Y axes are synchronized! Love the channel keep up the awesome work! I really Really Hope I could maybe hear back from you / hope you see this comment as it’s been so hard to find another duet CNC user doing that type of homing (again I’m presuming you are by seeing the U axis - maybe I’m wrong) Thanks!

Im sure thyis is an excellent tutorial but where the videos for total beginners?! There is so much high level assumed knowledge. I thought the whole idea of a CNC kit is that beginners can enter the world of CNC! I am building the Workbee and have the previous Duet controller which as you say is designed for 3D printing. Can somebody PLEASE link me to a total beginners tutorial for the Duet?
@EducatingSavvas
@EducatingSavvas 3 года назад
It might be worth buying a book about CNC for noobs. But for the duet the best thing is to read the gcode library and then go to the system files and read those. It takes a lot of imagination and then trying things out in a controlled way. I am working on a manual for my latest controller which might help but that will take a while to be ready.
@msdosfx
@msdosfx 3 года назад
I built the workbee with the Xpro 4 control, and I have been looking at the duet for my second CNC build... but No graphical 3D model of the G-code in the control software is currently a deal breaker, despite the many advantages and additional axis support that the duet offers. I could be wrong about this, but there is so little documentation on running CNC with Duet. I would say, maybe, if you built a pretty standard workbee, to use a GRBL controller such as CNC shield, Xpro, Black Box Motion Control and use the OpenBuilds guide to setting up your GRBL settings for the Workbee and use OpenBuilds Control software, for the simplicity and 3D graphical rendering of your G-code, plus is very well maintained with updates. Otherwise, I would watch the Ryan Locke videos on the Duet on the Ooznest youtube for configuring the Duet. Good luck!
@WoodomainJeremyBroun
@WoodomainJeremyBroun 3 года назад
@@msdosfx Thanks. I dont even know what GRBL means. There is so much jargon. I need a basic video that explains all this. I have watched Ryan Lock videos and find his narration difficult to follow. There are no Ozznest videos on how to actually use the software that I can find, just one on calibrating the machine. Highly frustrating over several years now. I have a tiny Chinese CNC machine which used Mach3 and I can intuitively see how most things work and there are plenty of excellent video tutorials. My observationis that the few UK people doing this are too cerebral and delivering at too high a level for complete beginners. How do you guys acctually get started? I need 'need to know' information about the Duet that was sold to me. I thought the whole point about robotic manufacture is it is time saving! Its far quicker to make a part by hand, but I can see the immense rewards once the learning curve has been tackled.
@msdosfx
@msdosfx 3 года назад
@@WoodomainJeremyBroun GRBL is just the Arduino language for CNC control. Like I said, I think you would be better off getting a different controller that speaks GRBL because there are better tutorials and support related to Workbee controlled by a GRBL based controller. The Duet is "better" because it is faster, more configurable, can do more axis, but unless you are an advanced user, I think it is probably not a good choice for a beginner. here is a list of GRBL based circuit boards available mellowpine.com/cnc/best-cnc-grbl-controllers-for-hobbyists/
@WoodomainJeremyBroun

@@msdosfx Thanks for the link which I studied. The problem is I have built my machine around components that were recommended and supplied to me as a beginner! Two and a half years on I am still not up and running so I cannot just change course and rip bits out and install the latest kid on the block controller circuitry and probably new stepper motors etc. You use the words 'Arduino language' when I have already said the jargon is gobbleygook to me! I am a CNC newbie but not completely stupid. I am the guy who wrote the pioneer book "The Incredible Router" in 1989 and my RU-vid video "What can you do with a router?" has 2.5 million views. Why? Because it is clear, succinct and starts with absolute basic principles and is clearly structured using plenty of visuals. The general standard of videos on CNC is apalling quite frankly. Yours is an exception but assumes advanced knowledge. The best tutorials are on Mach3 and delivered by experts who are clearly teachers. One series in particular by Roger Webb who repeats key teaching points as they can easily be forgotten. Hours and hours can be wasted watching videos by poor communicators that dont answer fundamental 'need to know'' questions. Unfortunately I have a mental block when it comes to electronics. I simply want a controller software where the interface is clear and bold on a small screen (as I have a small workshop cramped wioth machines and equipment as space is at a premium) and one which allows me to import and edit basic G-code that will allow me to cut a 2.54D rectabgle and circle! That means my first project can be a custom built spindle mount as I am trying out different spindles. Feed speeds and RPM for me are intuitive and done by watching and listening. Also I want to be able to see the cutter engaging. These endless videos on dust shoes that totally conceal the cutter engaging seem to me to further remove the user rom the natural engagement of working wood. Fortunately the Ooznest related forums are a useful conduit for all the complex issues likely to be encountered by anyone with enfless time available to inhdulge in this field
