A double delight, of Southern mainline steam was billed, for the first weekend in September. The star locos were 4464 Bittern & 34067 Tangmere. Both engines were pulling, the Torbay Express & Royal Duchy.
We start the day at Coombe Cellars, where 4464 is seen on a misty morning as the A4 makes its way down the Teign Estuary, on route to Kingswear. Drab conditions, but a good show from the driver, making it worth the wait. We stay with Bittern, as it's now seen working up the bank to Churston on the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway. Later on we see, the A4 basking in the sunshine, while being turned on the turntable, in readiness for it's return working, from Kingswear. The return of the Torbay Express, is seen twice, firstly at Maypool, still on preserved metals, the A4 powers it way up to Churston, with a little slip. Later on, it's seen blasting up through Torre on the mainline, as it heads home to Bristol.
With the Torbay Express finished, we now turned our attention to the return working of the Royal Duchy, where we witnessed a ferocious climb of Hemerdon Bank. The Spam Can put on a show for the masses, as it made light work of the treacherous climb, as it topped the bank at almost 29mph. We then capped off a long day, at Tiverton Parkway, where Tangmere breezes through the station, running bang on time.
Hope you enjoy the footage.

I used to stand on Nancy bridge at Golcar on the Huddersfield - Manchester old main line as a kid and watch the steam traffic on the long approach through Golcar station, A Beeching victim. Keep memories alive, I can still smell the steam. Brilliant. Bless your heart.

A very nice set of clips there. Tangmere absolutely flattened Hemerdon bank! I've never seen a steam engine do it so fast. When everything goes to plan those bullied pacifics are superb machines and a spectacle to watch. Great vid and subscribed :)

Great coverage Liam, I do love Tangmere and it was good to see her in top form. Your mention of Coombe Cellars took me back to when I was about 14. We went on a Wallace Arnold mystery coach tour from Paignton which ended up there at a lovely little pub.

Cheers, Austin. Was a remarkable performance up Hemerdon. Wasn't expecting a run up the bank like that. All credit to the crew. Coombe Cellars looks a great public house, just a shame I didn't have time for a beer and something to eat. Regards, Liam

Some really great clips here Liam. Looked a bit misty down there in South Devon....liked seeing 'Bittern' on the turntable at Churston.....Best wishes...Steve.

Steve, the sea mist was a real problem, which caused my shot of Tangmere, to be a throw away. Fortunately the mist lifted a touch for Bittern. Though it's garter blue made it easier to track. Glad you liked the turntable scenes. Regards, Liam

Interesting to see Bittern not failing on the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway. The last video I viewed on that railway showed an A4 stalling despite diesel traction at the rear. They had to bring out a P & D GWR loco to get it going! Loved your video with Tangmere sounding unique!

A4s look better with wheel guards imo. But I can see why they were removed later on in their career.
