454 vs 460 recoil comparison

I did a video comparing the 454 Ruger Alaskan to the 460 S&W PC and someone asked to see the recoil difference. Here it is (slow motion and all). The 360 hard cast out of the 460 is the edge of my recoil tolerance, and if I shoot more than a few cylinders full, my elbow and shoulder will be sore the next day. It is recoil that I would describe as intolerable to all but the most experienced magnum handgun shooter, and I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner.
This footage was shot on a private (closed) range by a professional.

Very cool! I won’t be able to pickup my 460 XVR until mid-June but I appreciate you posting the comparisons. I’ve stocked up on 45 Colt and 454 FMJ and am picking up 460 a few boxes at a time (rather than cases ;)… For me, this is a leap from shooting 357’s out of a Colt Target so I’ll be building up incrementally to the crazy 460’s Thanks!

45 colts are like 38 special out of a full size revolver, very mild. The 454 are not too bad. Definitely build up, but a lot of fun. Thanks for the support

Having tested for accuracy from 25 yards, numerous 460 and 500 rounds ranging from 200 to 400grs in both the 460 and 500 S&W 3.5" PC revolvers, I've discovered the following. Shooting with a glove affected the overall accuracy. When I was shooting "Double Action" bare hands, standing unsupported, the 5-10 round groups were much more tight and accurate than when wearing gloves. An example would be a 5 round group under 2", were as a gloved hand with a similar 5 round group would spread out to 5-6". Wearing gloves, tends to prevents you from holding/gripping the gun as tight as possible resulting in the gun slipping in your hands however so slight, similar to flinching. This results in the bullet leaving the barrel with the powerful recoil movement from the looser gloved grip. The same happened shooting the Ruger Alaskan 454. The tremendous recoil generated by these powerful revolvers necessitates a "Super Tight" grip which is circumvented by using gloves.

Very interesting. I may try to see if I can replicate your results. It makes sense though.

Quick question brother i have the taurus raging hunter 5inch 460 and someone wants to trade me an alaskan casull 454 like yours so would that be a good trade or absolutely not?

I mean that is an opinion question, but since I love giving my opinion here goes. The 460 will shoot 460 and 454, where the alaskan will only shoot 454 (and both will shoot 45 colt). BUT - the alaskan is a pound lighter, holds SIX instead of 5, and the shorter barrel is easier to carry. So for me at least it comes down to this: What do you use the gun for? If it is for protection against large animals, then make the trade. There is nothing in North America that alaskan won't drop. If it is for heart pounding recoil then keep the 460. I have both and if I had to pick one, I would pick the Alaskan. It is way easier to carry and 454 is enough for everything around me. But the 460 recoil is unlike anything else :) I will also add, that I like the Taurus revolvers I own, but Ruger revolvers are just awesome. I hope that helps.

Awesome video brother i just bought the raging hunter 460 5inch and was wondering would the recoil be the same as how yours is or would it be a tiny less due to barrel length

I think it will be less because of the extra barrel length and those barrels are ported. The porting will help a good bit with this cartridge.

Jeeez....may i ask your bodyweight, bro? I weight 160 pounds. Strongly reconsidering 😮. Stick to my 10mm..otherwise: flying backwards through the tundra is good way of escaping

@@creykovic 220 lbs, but a lot of dealing with this recoil is forearm and grip strength. Whatever you carry, use the right ammo (hard cast flat nose) if you need penetration on large dangerous animals.

Damn! In the slo mo, you can see the recoil push his whole body back😅 I gotta get one of these. The most powerful revolvers I have, or have ever shot, are my 357 Python and my GP 100. I bet they feel like BB guns compared to these monsters.

The Ruger Alaskan sells for considerably less than the 460, but both are a blast (literally).

@murphyfirearmstraining3630 not necessarily. Apparently they don't make them much anymore. I won this one on gun broker for 1550 plus all the fees and taxes. 1787 smh. I guess I might as well get the 460.
