Abrading with the hard stone, flaking with the limestone! Those flakes feathered out like antler flakes. Great lesson on letting the stone show you what it needs. Thanks, Patrick, this is very instructive. I'll review this one several times.
The first time I saw my work piece fold I was stunned and then started laughing because I actually saw the folding action and my brain was saying it's rock and that's impossible.
Paleo, I grew up with that stuff. It is native to my home. Just fyi, it works much better after soaked a while in water. I like it. It has it's own peculiarities. Thanks for the videos, good luck.
I think they was too much mass toward the tip when you struck the back it in shocked it but you can never tell how raw hornstone nodules is going to react to each hit it looked solid where it broke in half to me i try too work the mess off the tip before I start taking any hard hits from the rear after the cortex is completely removed when left towards the middle why your working on the front and back it can help absorb shock from the middle of the piece
JC I Am heading to the landscaping co's in my town. You amaze me with your knowledge and talent. I enjoy your vids more than you could imagine. I am 74 and have been trying to knapp for 8 mo. Wow I love it but it does not seem to return the love. Ha ha. Thanks again for your instruction and knowledge. Keep up the good work which by the way is beautiful. Hope to meet you someday?
I wonder if heavier hammer stones would have helped out here. It looks like your technique is based more on hammer stone speed. More hammer stone mass in the early reduction stages may be helpful. I'm not as expert as you are, this is just my question/ observation. Please keep the great videos coming and thanks for keeping it real.
yeah, a larger hammerstone would work quite well. One of the main reasons I don't use them is the pain they cause in my wrist. The smaller stone also seems to have a closer relationship to the punch work I do. Flaking is similar.
the material is so delicate ill send u the guys number so u can get u some i just got two more 5 gallon buckets from him for a good price and i can get all his throw away pieces for free its good stuff but some has a few cracks that can be worked out im talking tons of this stuff
