Great video, Dan. I agree completely about the availability of older presses. I’m in my 4th year of collecting jazz records and there was a lot more available for a lot less money just 4 years ago. Thanks for sharing your shopping experiences.
My favorite Chicago store is on the South Side. It's in a preominately Black neighborhood. I'm thinking a whole lot of younger generation are selling their parents and grandparents records.
I unfortunately went to high school in Deerfield. Parents lived there for 40yrs. 1 black student in my class in 1985 I had never heard that history, but it doesn’t surprise me
Hello, Dan! Just discovered your channel and enjoyed this travelogue immensely. I just moved to the Milwaukee area last year and haven’t made it down to Chicago yet. Really appreciate the suggestions here for record stores to check out, when I do. You made it to Bullseye in Milwaukee!! Great store! Has quickly become my favorite record store in the area. I always find fantastic jazz records every time I go in. And they have 78s, which I love. Anyway…Huge jazz fan, myself, so looking forward to more of your videos. Skol! Jeff
Have you been to Jazz Record Mart before Bob sold his stock, prior to opening Bob's Blues and Jazz Mart? It was a great store! A coupe of locations before, there was a newspaper clipping hangin on a string from the ceiling. The story said that JRM had 2000 Blues titles and 8000 Jazz titles in stock. I remember going to Rose Records under the L Tracks. A three story record store . Their Jazz section was huge. At the time (about 1985) I was collecting Blues records. I remember thinking, dang I'm glad I don't collect Jazz records, that would be expensive. Well, yes it is.
Great video Dan....Happy Birthday to your wife and many blessings ❤....wow Dan my sister in law is from Chicago and I went to my brother's wedding there over 10 years ago and it was great but did not have time to go record buying....but I have brought from Dusty Groove in the past online where I found great biys of jazz records....all the best as always....Ed in New York 🙏🥂🎶🎵🎂🌃
I’ll definitely checking out those stores, next time I’m in “The Chi.” I’m always leery about sellers on Discogs and EBay. Most times the sellers are super sketchy and refuse to answer specific questions about an albums condition. That’s a big red flag to NOT make the purchase.
100% I agree you should focus a little more on the reissues that are coming out, while putting them in historical context and talking about the music rather than the sound quality. I think this would be a boost for your channel AND would really help the jazz listening community. The "audiophile guys" buying these reissues do focus too much on pressings, but my sense is that most of them are genuinely curious and do love the music. There is a need for more knowledge about WHY these reissued titles coming out are important. Without you providing this knowledge, most of what is available on RU-vid when these people search about new reissues is superficial consumerist bull*** with no talk at all about the music. For example, there are new Art Pepper reissues coming out soon under the "Contemporary Acoustic Sounds Series" (including for Record Store Day). It would be a shame if everyone searching for information about Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section can only find people talking about how it makes their speakers sound. PS -- congrats on the Teddy Edwards pickup!
The Edwards was a long hard fought road!!! I am not even sure where to find this info about what is coming out ??? I will cover the Meets the Rythm section soon!!!
Man I waffled too... i wasnt sure if i had this cover as well.. I knew i had that later one... my books didnt tell me if i had added that cover or not... happy to have added it
Happy Born Day To “Lady Jazz Shepherd.”🎂 Next time you’re in “The Chi,” I’ll send you some restaurant recommendations. Hope you had some Lou Malnati's Deep Dish🍕
Universal Beings is a fantastic album. Pretty much the only recent jazz record I have. Each of the 4 sides sound quite different, and he is an awesome drummer. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.
Glad you had a good time, and happy bday to your wife, too. I work at a music venue right by the Belmont Reckless locale, and agree that their service is second to none. Very refreshing in a sea of indifference generally. I've so many reckless bags that i no longer need garbage bags.
Nice finds. Interestingly, a good number of the guys you picked up were on my favorite jazz record ever, the one that opened the flood gates nearly 30 years ago: Lester Young Jazz Giants (56). Pres, Teddy Wilson, Vic Dickenson, and Roy Eldrige. Great players!
In the summer of 1959 (I was 10) we visited a very distant relative in Deerfield. I think the adults were talking about keeping the blacks out of town.
Very nice video, almost felt Chicago winds blowin all the way over here. Send my kindest regards to your sweetheart and cheers to you both! ❤Really interesting story,as if there are any other sort coming from you!😂
Wife is a tolerant partner, who listens to all my music, and understands it is my life,... but her relationship with musis is not the same, she wants some rnb to clean the house, or some Snoop n Dre, or some Def Tones era hard rock nu metal... she likes some industrial stuff too... and she has learned to love a lot of what I play from Kaskade to Rudimental ...B Marley to Rage... At this point she listens to books most of the time .
Glad to hear you had a nice trip, Dan. Been wanting to take a first trip out to Chicago from here in CA and experience the city. I'm interested to hear what you think about that Makaya McCraven. I really enjoyed it. I like a lot of what Makaya has put out recently. He has a recent Blue Note release that I enjoyed too.
Good to see you had fun times in Chicago and got back into record buying. Seems like a great trip and yes it would be great to hear your take on the new reissues eg the new Acoustic Sounds Contemporary titles just announced
@@TheJazzShepherd whenever I think of Chicago I am always reminded of the classic 'Blues Brothers' film and the scene where Jake and Elwood are in the dingy apartment with Elmore James spinning on the turntable.
Some interesting insights into your Chicago vinyl odyssey, Dan. The John Graas LP made me sit up and take note. I have some of his EPs (probably late 50s) on the UK Brunswick label. They're all virtually unplayed as I inherited them from an ex-colleague. I must sit down and give them some serious listening.
@@TheJazzShepherd I have some Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse Allstars, Pete Jolly, Bob Cooper etc. EPs from the same source. One of these days I must get round to playing them all. I was also interested to see you sporting the Reckless Records T-shirt. I hadn't been in their branch in Berwick Street, London for a few years and went in with a friend about a month ago. One of the few remaining second hand record shops left in the capital.
@@TheJazzShepherd Extortionate commercial leases combined with the trend to online has meant many second hand records stores have now closed their doors in London. One example is Harold Moore's (who were ostensibly classical specialists but with jazz in the basement) who closed about 5 years ago. I think it's now a boutique. There are many others who went the same way.
