In this video I try out the Hud-Son Badger firewood processor for the second time after unveiling it. Hud-Son sent down some new parts after all of the feedback from the first video, and we try it out with some logs that are more appropriate for this style machine.

Nice run thru of this machine. I think it was great that the company took some of your suggestions/observations and made alterations to them. Not an ideal machine for everyone but I can see how it might be useful for in the woods processing where you move the machine to the tree instead of vice versa. Good video 👍

Bigger push plate, centering guide rollers( like on a boat trailer) log clamp /tongs to connect to the winch rope. Takes time to get things right. Can see it being handy in production forestry during thinning operations. Cheers from HB NZ

i can't help but notice that you are getting close to the 500th video mark. congrats and thank you for all that wholesome entertainment. i must confess that i do miss your old introduction. would you consider bringing it back?

love how the company took those suggestions. show commitment to product improvement and not an ego-based mindset. i looks like some of those rounds were getting pushed sideways before going through the wedge. a larger faceplate on the ram with texture on it might help.
@DudeRanchDIY

Yes being open to suggestions is a very good sign! A larger push block would certainly help, they also were getting pushed to the side because of the angled cuts on the rounds.

Nice video Jake 👍. It seems that a ATV log arch's (rear wheel helper) would be a great help to the use and operation of this firewood processer.

Hello Mr. Jake. Good Vid. For no more than you have run this you did pretty good, there are tricks to running any machine well, after a couple dozen totes you would have them all figured out, so do not hold yourself too accountable for failure or success of this mission.

For those longer logs, lowering the out feed end of the unit would make the saw better match the angle and give a more square cut

Liked the video. I like seeing different equipment work in real life settings. I'm like you it works best with a set size log. Like i said I cut wood for myself so cost verses use it would not make sense to own it.

First off I’d like to see one of those Chinese processors like the Range Road 300s and being loaded by one of the Chinese mini skid steers. You can get them so cheap. I wonder how they would work for you. Now if that hook slipped off under load wouldn’t it whip at ya? Also, I know metal cables that snap can kill folks when it whips. They make rope that can go in the winch that if that breaks nobody gets hurt. I still think a set of log tongs is the way to go. Even if it occasionally slips off it is just so easy to put back on. That hook is pretty sweet upgrade though. Thanks for the video

I’d be interested to try one of the range road processors. I agree with you, I think HUD-Son should change out the steel winch cable for synthetic winch rope for a number of reasons. The hook worked well, just needs some beefing up!

I think in a perfect scenario where you have telephone pole style logs all lined up with the machine, you could fly through the splits

The Hudson Hornet belongs with someone that does a very small firewood operation and that can get small diameter logs. Japa or EasternMade with a large live deck to produce hundreds of cord a year.
@DudeRanchDIY

I think with the right supply of wood you could make a lot of firewood relatively quickly with this machine once you get used to it.

@@DudeRanchDIY Seems like a lot of work with the Hudson compared to Chris In the woodyard or Joe from Ohio wood burner with their processors.

Yeah, it’s definitely more work with this style machine. Can’t really compare it to their style processors, totally different both in design and cost. Their machines are at least double the price.

Thanks for the video at least you get an idea how it does work! I just think if I had to chainsaw and splitter I'd probably be better off I mean I think I could cut enough rounds and I think I might be better off I'm sure it's probably going to be cheaper I don't know what it cost it's going to be cheaper just have a chainsaw and splitter anyway it could work out for somebody though thanks appreciate that info have a great day!

Don't we all need long wood lol .... IMO I feel this is still priced to high I know in my area in the northeast I could get a processor with a live deck that can take 12ft log 20in diameter for 18k ... I think this machine shines where someone select cuts trees and wants to split them right after dropping them and given that I believe wallenstein is a hard competitor here given they're only 18k as well for there cable feed machines
@DudeRanchDIY
@DudeRanchDIY 2 месяца назад
lol 😂 yeah the price is a little higher than I’d like to see. There are some pretty competitively priced processors with live decks on the market for about the same, although I can not speak to the quality of them.

Hudson is right in my home town. A cool piece that I’ve been thinking of is they are the North America Uniforest dealer. Uniforest makes some pretty cool processors I like the design of. Hudson could probably make a power pack to go with it though because the Uniforest is a tractor powered machine which in my opinion is the biggest downfall.
@DudeRanchDIY
@DudeRanchDIY 2 месяца назад
I believe uniforest makes a standalone model as well
@RedHeadEd615
@RedHeadEd615 2 месяца назад
@@DudeRanchDIY currently only pto and electric motor options from anything Hudson said and I can see on Uniforest site. Hudson offered to build a power pack to go with a processor if I wanted to buy one but I really wanted them to encourage Uniforest to have a mounted engine for the North American market but we’ll see if that comes in the coming years.

I would not buy that machine for $10. Watching you working with it shows me it is not very well designed. Still has a few problems that need to be worked out.
@nickharrington6326
@nickharrington6326 2 месяца назад
what suggestions would you give for its improvement?
@DudeRanchDIY
@DudeRanchDIY 2 месяца назад
I think it’s been pretty well designed for what it is. It’s not really intended to be a “high output” machine. With some tweaking to certain aspects, I think the process can be streamlined and be made a little less “clunky”. The few small changes I suggested for the winching seemed to really help speed things up.
@peterisner7215
@peterisner7215 2 месяца назад
It appears from the video the machine was not leveled (bar oil in container). If it was a little more tongue down, it may of helped with those first saw cuts on the long poles. Also a peavey would straighten out the log to the machine with little effort, still wouldn’t need a tractor. This machine would be nice in an area where you pull to woods with truck, fell and process in the woods right into the back of the truck or large dump trailer. Then leave with the machine again. I like to leave the chips and branches in the woods, not my driveway.

Every processor has a learning curve. You have to cut the logs to fit the processor type. For example all those stubs sticking out will not make for quick or easy splitting. Angle of the log makes for angled cuts which means the push plate pushes them sideways and causing jambs. ( the push plate needs to be bigger and have aggressive teeth on it). Biggest mistake is feeding the log backwards, the butt needs to go to the wedge. That is true of almost any splitter or processor. Wedge should always be splitting big end first so that as it feeds it is getting smaller and it doesn't get jammed in the wings. I'm sure that Jake will get the hang of it quickly. My buddy has a Blacks Creek and he was having a tough time with the logs he had stock piled for it as he cut by chainsaw before. Now that he's had it a year he is splitting much faster. I have a Wallenstein processor and I cut and stack my logs to make them work better for the way it runs.

The only non issue you had was the conveyor, but still some pieces passed over the side, it may be alright for a retired person doing his firewood but it would need to be 8 feet long. But then you'd need a helper just to keep the through full.
@DudeRanchDIY
@DudeRanchDIY 2 месяца назад
I will say the few issues I had with it this run probably could’ve been avoided had I had more experience with the machine. But at the same time, some things could be tweaked to eliminate the issues I had altogether.
