Well, his analysis is correct that the LB was out of position, but just as important is once again Trey locked in on a given receiver with his eyes from the start and that permitted the LB to jump the pass and almost create an INT. Looking off your receivers is very basic stuff. This is not a skill that should take years and years of NFL games to develop. And to be honest, given several of the completely missed reads he made where he didn't even recognize the correct side of the field to throw to the back in the flat, I would not be surprised at all if he did not even know where the LB would be expected to be or not be in that situation. I mean, c'mon. This guy is regularly missing simple basic reads that you would literally expect a 2nd week FA QB to be able to make pretty easily regardless of whether they are an expert in your offense or not. Poor decision making or slow decision making or the inability to make correct decisions will never be successfully offset by arm strength. Lets be at least a bit honest here. He's getting these chances because they gave up a treasure trove of picks to get him. If an undrafted FA or late round pick was showing this little ability to make correct reads after 2 full years with the team they would not be on the roster opening game. Does he have a lack of playing time? Yes, most definitely. But a lack of playing time does not prevent you from looking at film and actually learning and knowing where you should be going with the ball quickly when you are put on the field.

Thanks for great analysis as always Jonny. 4:01 The difference is that Juice chipped the edge defender opening up the route, and Willis (or more likely #81) didn't. That's why Bell did not get a clean release, which messed up the timing of the play. So that one was more on the blocking than Trey. It's also why Trey had to wait a little longer for the route to open up. I'm very glad to see Trey playing much better. He's definitely improved his understanding of scheme and how to apply it in game. He made major improvements in this on the practice squad in his first year, learning scheme, and made even larger improvements since last season. Scheme understanding is how he knows where to go with the ball against the defensive look for a given play. And of course he's identifying the looks much better both pre and post snap. He also has a much more compact and efficient throwing motion, BUT FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY has vastly better footwork. Was very happy to see him executing the offense well in his last two drives. He may have a chance to reach more of his potential and be successful in the league. I think this is the first time I've been able to say that confidently, based on his performance. He's starting to look like a competent QB, and it took a lot of work to get there, given his inexperience.
@jonnydel
@jonnydel 11 месяцев назад
Even without a clean release, the issue is that Lance hangs on the intermediate too long and can still get the ball out to Bell quicker.

8:14 Look at the room 33 (I'm assuming Colletto) has in front of him. If the LB did that intentionally then he won't be suiting up on Sundays much longer. Would love to see Trey recognize the bust and flip it out to the flat, but all told i loved what I saw from him this outing. Great breakdown as always Jonny.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 11 месяцев назад
That would be next, next level execution. Normally on that play, the linebacker would have rotated down and #33 WOULD have been covered. So in that sense, it was the right read of the defense for Trey to NOT go to #33. A QB like a Rogers or Brady could probably notice that busted coverage, but only because they know the defense almost perfectly. Trey's not there yet and did the right thing based on what the LB was SUPPOSED to do.

Cool to see objective film that shows that Lance is indeed learning and improving. Lance gets so much flack, but this isn't a Johnny Manziel, who just made air waves that he didn't do film study--- Trey's really working at it, is naturally a smart kid, but just doesn't have the reps/game experience. Unfortunately, barring an injury to Purdy (which no fan should root for), it's unlikely Trey gets the chance with our roster situation. Still though, going into it with Purdy as QB1 and Lance/Darnold as the backups, with Allen as a fourth QB... we have a very good QB plan for the season.
@willbarton7018
@willbarton7018 11 месяцев назад
Thanks for the breakdown again. I’m a niner fan first not a QB fan, but I’m struggling with the fans preaching Trey should be starting. To me he doesn’t even look close to nfl ready compared to Purdy. Am I off base? Is it close? To me purdy looks like a mobile Jimmy g. Don’t get me wrong I’m definitely rooting for Trey to continue to improve.
@humbertoramirez358
@humbertoramirez358 11 месяцев назад
I think Purdy fits the scheme well. Kyle has a certain game plan and if it’s executed it can deliver. But if it doesn’t work he doesn’t really know how to adjust. I think the issue with fans that think Trey should start is all they see is the upside. But you also have some fans that look at what Purdy did and think he can’t do any wrong. But he also had a bunch of dropped int last year and he’s consistently had int issues at practice this training camp. But you also have to look at our offense and we’re not the same running team we were in the past. We have a much harder schedule this year and he could possibly struggle because he doesn’t have the arm to threaten teams downfield. I honestly think we’re gonna possibly need all 3 QBs this year. Our right side oline looks bad and our backups besides Ilm Manning are horrific.
@LoanwordEggcorn
@LoanwordEggcorn 11 месяцев назад
@@humbertoramirez358 Brock, Sam and Trey are all great scheme fits for Kyle's offense and Kyle DOES customize his plays to the skillsets of his players. Brock has made some great off-schedule plays and scrambles incredibly well TO SET UP THE PASS, so I don't see how you can say that he doesn't adjust. (Or do you mean Kyle doesn't adjust well enough?)
@jonnydel
@jonnydel 11 месяцев назад
Not off base at all. To me, Purdy undoubtedly should be QB1. Where Lance falls is what week of the season it would be in, should he be called upon. If he's got 10 games to finish off the season, I think you go with Lance - give him a runway. If it's a late season scenario, Darnold.

@awoodfin3903
@awoodfin3903 11 месяцев назад
Love these videos, best break down out there. The problem I see is defenses play Lance a little different, plus the personnel matters. In the play by play of Purdy vs Lance on the same play, Brock throws it out quick to Deebo because he's cleared the line with no defender. On Lance's play, the DE is in his face because Bell runs the route behind the line slower than Deebo. I believe Lance holds it because he's trying to make the defender make a choice and give his guy room. I think Shanahan needs to run plays to get Trey throwing more down field on roll outs, not from the pocket. The defense is spying him as a runner so the quick and short passes get crowded. They are also just trying to blow up the play and bring pressure. If Lance has time, he can operate

The play is not designed to go to that side of the field. Now you might say that it should be, but's that's not how scheme (and scheme busters) is designed. Jonny explained the defensive scheme and the offensive scheme buster at 10:43 Also the deep route on the right side was double covered with a defender underneath and over the top. So the routes on the left side of the field are the ones that create the 3 on 2 matchup. 3 on 2 (left side) has a much better chance of success than 1 on 2 (right side). You want the numbers advantage to win the play. So in that sense, the deep route is a decoy to use up 2 defenders and open things up on the left side. Again the goal is to create favorable matchups.

As someone who believes lance is a bust, I must say I was impressed with how he overcame his jitters in this game. I got hyped over that touchdown drive, very good. BA's reaction was hilarious. I don't think he's better than Darnold tho. Maybe with time and more reps but I don't know if he'll ever get em in SF. Sure trey looked good against 3rd string Broncos but in a high pressure game against Eagle, Cowboy, Chief....Raider 1st stringers.. he'll likely crumble.

Threw an INT and a couple of more that should have been INTs. Meanwhile Brock & Jimmy G had GREAT STARTS, against other STARTERS after being injured most of the season with more limited reps.

Trey was playing against Denver's third stringers, guys (most of whom) will not make the roster. I would have been really surprised if a #1 draft pick did not look good.

Trey was also playing with the 3rd string Offense and offensive line, guys who will most likely be cut, or on the practice squad, it works both ways. I'd like to see how Lance would do with our 1st team Offense, with all those Weapons who can get open fast

Most fans, coaches, managers, team owners and analysts of the NFL don't understand how intelligent Trey Lance is. He doesn't need 50 or so NFL games to get better like other NFL quarterback rookies need in order to improve. Trey gets better once he has read the defense and his own offensive players of their weaknesses and strengths, protecting the football during that time. Once he knows what receiver is getting open more often and what side of the offensive line is weak and allowing defensive players through which might take a few possessions, then he goes on the attack with much more aggression and confidently marches the team down the field to score points. Trey Lance will be very difficult for other teams to scout and analyze because Trey is much smarter than they are. He adjusts from one possession to another according to what he sees and analyzes while playing and while he's on the sideline. In other words, he is outsmarting the plans of other teams and doing his own thing to win games. Shanahan understands Trey but because of injuries, Trey hasn't been able to be on the field for more than 5 quarters as a starting quarterback and unfortunately for him, Jimmy also got injured soon after he replaced him and then the 3rd string quarterback who Shanahan saw during preseason games and new Brock's history, shined on the field to extend the win streak until he had a season ending injury. All of a sudden, Brock Purdy became the hero so Shanahan, who still loves Trey Lance and his intelligent playing, has to show that he loves Brock Purdy now. When you listen to Shanahan, he isn't bragging about either player but since everyone wants a hero on the team to win another Super Bowl since 1995, they don't care about Shanahan, Trey Lance or that Jimmy Garoppolo was the only quarterback since Colin Kaepernick to get the team to the Super Bowl for a 50% chance of winning it.

Trey is understanding scheme much better, and that's why he's able to make successful reads. His intelligence is helping him learn and apply scheme, along with a ton of hard work to get there. Agree he's learning quickly from the relatively few reps he's getting, and that too is a definite sign of intelligence, but I think you may be overstating things somewhat. That said, we both agree he's smart and hope he succeeds. Brock and Sam are also highly intelligent but are vastly more experienced and that's why they're better QBs today. But Trey is most definitely catching up, and that's highly impressive.

We didn't watch the same game. Th estupid pick? The pick that the linebacker broke so early on that he actually over-ran the pick? Multiple sub-optimal decisions during his time in the game. But, in the end, the Broncos blew a coverage and you're acting like did something. Please...

Dagg you got hTe in your all in your Spirit.. you want Lance to fail so bad it’s borderline evil dude like why are you so upset.. he made a couple bad decisions many Starter NFL QBs do … so they can throw interceptions or throw a bad look but Trey has to be perfect every snap ? Jimmy did shii like that for years
@rcg9573

I like this kid, but I'm just not sure I see the quick processing necessary to be a big time NFL QB here. Yes, there was some improvement over the Raiders debacle, but he still has numerous plays where he makes either incorrect or just flat out wrong reads and I'm sorry, at some point you need to show serious improvement or just admit what you have. The several plays where he did not even throw the ball to the flat on the correct side of the field are very basic simple reads that should simply not take years of experience to have locked down already. And he continues to often just lock in on receivers, which makes it very easy for DB's to read his eyes and make dangerous plays on a good number of his throws.

Bro that’s Ty Davis price that’s not Christian Mcaffrey or Elijah mitchel … he can correct that will film … Jimmy use to make quick reads and throw a lot of Dumb interceptions… no Qb will always be perfect you act like he threw a pick ignoring the Check down .. Listen bro 49ers didn’t win a Super Bowl in a while you can’t check down a Super Bowl Win … you being unfair period blank .. Trey has a arm and will use it and will get more comfortable as he plays and understands what’s immediately gonna be more open …

You don’t like Trey just say that your mind already made up … Trey will have to complete every pass and see everything and avoid every pressure and never throw a pick worthy play because no other starting Qb on the Niners or in the league for that matter Has done that right 😅
