4Kᵁᴴᴰ Finnish F/A-18C Hornet Awesome Maneuvers without Thrust Vectoring 

Why is the Air-Intake positioned so far behind under the LERX in F/A-18.

Especially when considering that this was a legacy hornet!! Imagine how this pilot performing this routine would fair in an F/A-18?!? With the enlarged surfaces (especially the extra alpha from the leading edges) and increased thrust... 👍

@@MikeOxlong- ...And the increased WEIGHT! The SH may, _MAY_ enjoy a slight advantage in the post-stall department against American USN/Marines Legacies, but the jet in this demo is the "enhanced" Finnish Legacy model, with revised FLCS software (i.e. no AOA limits) and enhanced thrust engines (~18k lbs). Go ask the Blue Angels about the changes in their routines they had to implement because the SH didn't perform as well as the Legacies.

Stick override, and it flies like a Su 33. What do ya know... Thats it.

It will blow the doors off an F16 for agility under 300 knots easily. Those LEX edges make a huuuuge difference at slow speed. To be fair this pilot is over riding the fight control system to pull these moves. Its usually frowned upon on normal flights but in intense real life combat or a demo, the demo pilots aren't there for a stroll in the park either, they are there to show you what it can do.

The f/a-18 has incredible low speed maneuverability and nose authority at high aoa because of its vortex generating edges and relatively straight wings. F-16 is designed more to be a high energy fighter where it maintains high speed and basically turn faster while losing less energy than its opponent and slowly gets behind them.

Ehh, the successor of the F-5 was the F-20 Tigershark (it was known as the F-5G initially). The Hornet is based on the F-5 airframe but ultimately is a modified YF-17.

Vielen Dank, Martin! Da stimme ich dir völlig zu. Die F-18 ist nach wie vor ein sehr gutes Kampfflugzeug, vor allem aber die Super Hornet. Von der sollen ja 30 Stck. + 15 E/A-18 Growler als (vorübergehender) Ersatz für die Tornados der Luftwaffe beschafft werden. Die Entscheidung darüber ist aber (immer) noch nicht gefallen. ;)

@@knightflightvideo Vorübergehend ist immer gut... das ist typisch deutsch... Erstmal Ersatz für die nächsten 10-15 Jahre suchen und dann schauen wir weiter... XD Ähnlich wie bei der Orion... erstmal Zwischenlösung für 10 Jahre, welcher aber immer noch nicht feststeht und dann evtl. etwas auf A320 basis.... :D Wenn die weiter warten ist die Hornet bei der Einführung ein altes Eisen... :P

Aircraft aside, this is a superb piece of flying. Just look at how crisp those maneuvers are.

Actually, the F/A-18 can easily beat the crap out of most fighters out there today (maybe except for f-22 and the newer SUs with tvc) in a low speed dogfight if it ever comes down to that.

F-35 certainly not will out maneuver F/A-18 and propably not a any teen-series fighter. That is because of its low aspect ratio wing and high wing loading. Because of winng I would say it can not maintain energy better. F-35 is dependent of its low radar visibility and weapons system.

And yet is a worse aircraft. Thrust vectoring looks nice at airshows but Russian aircraft are notorious for falling to pieces
