This is Lore Bauer. Born in Kollerschlag, Austria 1921. She was assigned to the Prague anti-aircraft department in late 1944 as a technical assistant, or Helferin. Raped and beaten by Czech Partisans, Lore was caught fleeing the Red Army into West Czechoslovakia, which had just been declared a demarcated American military zone. Lore survived the Allied internment camp system, then went on to build a new life, working for an Airlines company after the war. She died in 94', at the age of 73... The film footage was taken on May 8, 45', near Plzeň, along the old Prague Highway, by Oren Haglund of the United States Army Air Corps.

Hmm .. These are not Soviet female anti-aircraft gunners killed by the Germans. The Germans in such cases did not stand on ceremony .. She was lucky. It was in Stalingrad .. " By 16 o'clock on 23 August, General von Wittersheim's 14th Panzer Corps reached the northern outskirts of Stalingrad in the area of the villages of Latoshinka, Akatovka and Rynok. Dozens of German tanks from the 16th Panzer Division of Lieutenant General Hube appeared in the area of the Tractor Plant, one and a half kilometers from the factory workshops. Following the tanks, the enemy threw two motorized and several infantry divisions into the formed eight-kilometer corridor. However, the Germans did not break into Stalingrad that day. The enemy's path was blocked by three anti-aircraft batteries of the second division of the 1077th anti-aircraft artillery regiment, manned by female personnel. The division was commanded by Captain Luka Ivanovich Dakhovnik. In two days of fighting, the German corps lost 83 tanks. In futile attacks, three battalions of German infantry were drained of blood. But all 37 Soviet anti-aircraft guns were destroyed. Most of the female personnel were killed..." Of course, not only anti-aircraft gunners fought against the Germans - they were helped by workers from the Tractor Plant and regular units of the spacecraft. But the fact remains.

She would be identified as Lore Bauer, a young German girl who had been assigned as a Luftwaffenhelferin to operate anti-aircraft guns, as Germany was experiencing massive losses of male soldiers. Stationed in Czechoslovakia when the war ended, she and her other german and austrian female were brutally beaten and raped. When she ran into an American unit on the road, you can see her bury her face into a small notebook. It turns out that she had hidden about 100 Czech crowns (currency) which she did not realize was worthless at the end of the conflict. She flashed the currency to bribe the soldiers into allowing her to pass. To let her know that the unit was American, cameraman Haglund handed her a US penny. Over time she made her way back to Germany and married after the war. She gave birth to two children, and it was her granddaughter, Emi, who would visit Haglund’s grave in San Bernardino, California and leave a penny-the very same penny given to her grandmother in 1945-on his headstone.

This video have 6.2 millions of views and you can't learn almost anything about WW2 from it and in the same time real document movie "SIEGE - Documentary film by Julien Bryan about the German invasion and siege of Warsaw in 1939" have only 25k views... and why? MAybe because in that document the victims are real victims and Germans act like Germans did for many years of this war that they started and in the end 70 millions of people died in it. From the beggining of the war Germans were taking 16 years old Polish girls to Germany to make forced workers out of them but German man was so busy with constantly using them like a toy to the point that this kids were unable to do any actual work... and these Germans man were doing it to these young girls for months until their bellies grew so large that it was impossible to hide from anyone the fact that one of them impregnated her! But here everyone is very concerned about a woman that have 8 more years and is actualy an adult that was literally helping to bring death and destruction to millions of people in that part of the World. All over Central Europe Germans were planting signs "Only for Germans" in Slavic cities to limit access to Slavic people to many thing, but after the war there was mass amnesia, and here in the comments it is the same story, people correcting that she was suddenly not German at all, she was Austrian... what a huge coincidence that the German Chancellor was also Austrian?!

He convinced them to move out of East Berlin only weeks before the Soviets turned it into an open air prison. Oma survived a childhood vaccine that crippled her and killed her brothers, the Gestapo harassing our family, a two year illness and hospitalization, and survived the war and occupation in Berlin, and even narrowly missed the Dresden massacre. She had a massive heart attack soon after I was born. The doctors said she shouldn't have survived and that she only had weeks to live. She stubbornly kept living until I was about 30 years old. My two aunt were teen girls back then and were abducted and gang raped by Polish soldiers. My great grandma was drowned, my grandma beaten up. My father became an alcoholic and my two aunt were never able to be with men, never got married, never got to have children even though they wanted to so badly. From 1983-85, I was stationed in Northern Germany with the US Army, 2nd Armored Division (FWD). My Landlady was a nice old German lady who had been 16 in 1944 when she was “recruited” into the German Army. She had learned English in school and was pretty good, so she was assigned to a communication unit and eventually she was asked to help translate communications that were intercepted. She said that she acted like she didn’t understand most of it so she was transferred to switchboard operator. When the war was ending one of the older women told her to flee as the Russian army closed in to Berlin where she had been moved to. So she fled with a few other girls and some women and hid out in the woods with fighting going on around them. They were told by the women to look for either Americans or English soldiers to surrender to. After about five or seven days, she wasn’t sure how many days, they heard the Americans coming and hid until they were sure that they could come out. They cut off their insignias and she told the soldiers that they were trying to get to their homes, but they were interned and interrogated for about 6 months and then allowed to leave the camp but she had to stay in the nearby town until they let her travel. Eventually the Army went and got her and asked her if she was willing to work for them. Of course she said yes and worked as an interpreter and later in the office of the Military Government. She stayed working for the Army until she retired in the 1970’s. She bought a barn and converted it into a 4 apartment building, renting out 3 of the apartments and living in the 4th. She was a nice lady and she loved my kids, but I don’t think she ever married or had kids of her own, at least I never saw any. As far as I know she may have been like the girls in these films. I remember you Frau Alfrida.

@cleodello
@cleodello 3 года назад
What makes this sad is that it the Civilian to Soldier ratios are increasing rather than decreasing. So, with older warfare either more soldiers died than civilians or it waa 1:1. For example, in the American Civil War was aproximate 1 civilian for ever 12 soldiers. In the Napoleonic War it was anywhere from 1:3 to 1:1. This was also similar for WWI where it was around 1:1.7. Then you see the introduction of heavy bombing, landmines, et cetera. So in WWII you see that somewhere around 3:2 or 2:1. Korean War 2:1. While the Iraq war is around 4:1. Some comflicts, especially if they are short, can still have lower ratios, but the trend is most definitely going up.. It's quite tragic.

Vast majority of soldiers in WWII were also civilians, drafted into service for the duration. Its easy to talk of Military and Civilian casualties, but in the big wars with draftee armies they are essentially the same thing. I think today's modern wars with the volunteer armies are different beasts, but when it comes to massive clashes of nations many civilians find themselves pressed into uniform to kill other civilians form another nation. Makes the wars more tragic in my opinion, makes those casualty tallies from battles more painful when you think of all the people who were in school or working jobs just a year or two prior who were thinking of their future.

@@colinkelly5420 good point. What is astounding is the fact that the decisions of a few politicians seals the tragic fate of millions of people. Wars that began as disputes and diplomatic failures among political leaders; even WWI could have been prevented as well as the rise of Hitler, had the treatise following WWI not been so brutal against the German people, which only set the stage and gave rise to the likes of Adolph Hitler. When I was a 17 year old kid in Topeka Kansas and working at my very first job, a McDonald's, I befriended a WW2 German soldier that had relocated to, I guess to the Midwest, Topeka .. after the war with his Family. He was in his mid 60's I think, and this would have been 1985 as I only worked there less than a year. How we became friends is, a little girl had dropped her Ice cream, this man who I didn't know at the time had just ordered an ice cream cone and instead, gave the little girl his cone. I promptly turned around, made him a new one and gave it to him without charging him. I would very occasionally see him come in and he would always get a coffee and water or, an ice cream cone. After a few months, one Friday when I was off, I came in after class from High-School to pickup my paycheck and ran into this man. He said "thank you for your kindness" and I said no problem. He had a accent, I asked about it and he said he was German. I was very intrigued and ended up talking to him for 20 - 25 mins. He told me he was in "The War" and was a "young German soldier in Hitler's Germany" I remember this very specifically because he said "Hitler" ... I remember the whole time I was talking to him, wondering if he had killed anyone in the war, but, never asked that question. When I was 12 or 13, I remember asking one of my Uncles who had served in Vietnam if he had killed anyone and both my Mom and Uncle told me I should never ever ask a soldier that question. I talked to him I think a few more times. It was always on Fridays when I came in to get my check that I would sometimes see him. One Friday I said hello again and ended up talking to him for over an hour. I had always been fascinated with War, not the death and destruction but about the bravery and courage it took for men to fight in wars and face death everyday. I was anxious to ask him about how bad war was and what he experienced. He brushed me off at first and said, "oh I don't remember much" but the more I inquired, the more he would open up and talk. I remember him telling me that they would drink and sing a lot and that WAR is not exciting like in the movies or news. To this day he told me I should be very thankful that I live in a time of peace. He said war is a time when bad things happen to everyone. He said he had lost a Brother and that because of the war his Mother became very sick. He then went on to say that the Russians raped a lot of German women. He also said that German soldiers would rape German women as well. He also said that at the end of the war he became separated from his unit and fell in with the driver of a truck and a few other soldiers and that they were pulled over by the German Military Police and arrested as suspected deserters. He said the SS ran the small camp they were in and that the camp was back and forth on the phone with the Gestapo trying to decide what to do. He said at the end of the WAR a lot of German soldiers would deserter and had no food and would end up looting, stealing food and raping women. He said he was cleared and released to a different unit. I'm not sure but I think he came over to the United States in the late 40's. 48 or 49. I knew his name at one time, I can't remember. But, I remember him. I am sure he has since passed away. I think about him anytime I see anything related to WW2. Old black and white videos, Hitler mentioned, this video. I can only assume she was beat and raped. I've read up a little on war atrocities during WW2 and it turns out that the Russian's visited a great deal of harm upon the German people at the end of the war and during it when they had a chance. I also read accounts that American G.I's also raped French and German woman as well. Regardless of all the horrors of WW2 ... to see this video is very sobering and my heart sinks to think what she went thru, what many many many people went through after the war. I hold women in very high regard and to see her blank brutalized face both angers me and saddens me.

I was born in Germany in 1972 and grew up in a "fixed" post-war world of polluters and losers. My grandmother and her sisters only had the chance to live and enjoy life in their "wild" years in the '20s. Hardly anyone talked about the war, especially not about World War II. I never got to know one of my grandfathers, because he was a staunch Nazi and, despite being exempt from military service due to illness, volunteered for the Eastern Front from France, from which he never returned. My great-uncle freed himself from Russian captivity and somehow managed to get back to Germany. I know from him that shrapnel kept festering out of his body until his death a few years ago. But I remember that one or the other memory broke through with contemporary witnesses at family celebrations and one or the other spoke about what they had experienced. I was, alas, too young to understand everything - for children in peacetime, war is far away, an abstraction, and even death is not understood. According to my great-aunt, who died in 1987, in the inner city of Hamm, where I was later born, Jews were forced to lie down on the street at the beginning of all evil (Night of Broken Glass). Then the "upright" German citizens were forced to march over these Jews. Kicking their legs, arms, stomachs and heads so that the "common" Jew would know where his place was. She had tears in her eyes at the time and quickly broke off the story/remembering because we were in the room with us as children. This story came when I was maybe 7 or 9 years old and I have never forgotten it. The woman filmed in this video certainly paid a price for the war far greater than her own guilt. I hope that despite everything, she was happy in her life and was able to process or at least suppress what she had experienced. And this is happening again now, in Ukraine. I detest this war and hate myself (as a German who is now 50 years old) for the good feeling that we Germans are not responsible for such a tragedy again.

Women, especially young women, are tragically the worst victims in war. Young men, after years of egged on hatred against other people before the war against them begins, are thrust into the barbarity of war. While many can internally separate the man from the soldier, many, after years of seeing their friends die in horrific ways, their homelands assaulted, and long stretches of killing, sleeping and defecating in mud trenches, eating whatever they can amass, and a complete disassociation with their humanity, become close to barbaric animals. Suddenly, they come across vulnerable and isolated young women (something they might not have seen in months) from the nations they now hate and they have a mixture of sexual desire and a thirst for revenge combined with their already reduced humanity and all of that thrown into a theater of war where there is no longer law, no longer repercussions, and no longer any resemblance of a society. It's a horror that is committed by all sides, and something the nations of the brutalizers try and sweep under the rug, even preferring the guilty go free then the bad PR that comes with it. The victims, if they even survive the assaults (which many do not) have nowhere to turn to for justice, and must carry their horror, combined with the shame they feel, inside themselves for the rest of their lives. War is truly a horrible thing. Of course, many of the men might just have been scumbags and rapists to begin with, as Lord knows plenty of that happens without wars going on.

America was behind and Russia already showed that they reached to moon first. So USA staged planted a Photo which looked like on the moon. But years later recently people noticed that flag is so straight and Moon does not have blowing air/wind/breeze blow. They kept it in archive those data in a Confidential Documents. War is simply a projection of these authoritarian behaviours onto a larger scale.

@@harrietlyall1991 Thank you for this insight into your former job. I hope you have found a way out of this horror. This trip here on planet earth can be really tough. Unfortunately, lot of our behaviour is more or less biological . Fighting for survival, climbing up the hierachy and humiliating, killing your enemy. Rape as a weapon of war is as old as mankind, just remember the mass rapes in ex Yugoslavia. Still, I believe that mankind as a species might develop. Looking at the long way that evolution has taken us this probably isn´t the last chapter. Of course this is only a faint consolation for those suffering. I truely hope your life has improved. Warm greetings from Germany!

My Lithuanian mother was exactly the same age as Lore. Born in Memel (now Klaipeda) in 1921, she fled from the advancing Bolsheviks to Denmark, then Germany in 1942. When this footage was shot in 1945 mum was still 24 and in Berlin. She had personal belongings stored in a warehouse in the East side of Berlin, so she and an older lady snuck over one midnight and got her belongings and escaped back to the West. She came to Australia in 1949. So glad to hear Lore made it out alive and lived to 73. My mum lived to 75 and passed away two years later in 1996. What brave women they were back then.

Not particularly complicated. Czech partisans who were fighting the Germans since 1939, took out their revenge at wars end on this unlucky female German soldier. Thankfully she made it to the American lines and I am sure she was treated fairly.

Pictured is Lara Bauer, a young German girl who had been assigned to operate anti-aircraft guns as Germany was experiencing massive losses of male soldiers. Stationed in Czechoslovakia when the war ended, she and her other female companions were brutally beaten and raped by angry Czechs. In the video she is seen suffering from wounds to her visage, and clutching in her hand a notebook, with Czech currency - which had become worthless by the war's end. She attempts to bribe the US soldiers (who are filming the video) to pass, at which point she finds that the currency is worthless. Many Germans, both ethnic Germans and German soldiers, were forcibly expelled from many territories in Europe when the war ended, many brutally beaten to death and killed in gruesome ways, in the tens of thousands. Many German women, hundreds of thousands of them, at the end of the war met similar fates at the hands of mostly Soviet and other Allied soldiers. To this day, no one has answered for these crimes.
