Episode 9:
Travel day for work and it was the perfect time to push my new 2023 Chevy Bolt EV to its limits. It is rated 260 miles range, but we prove it can comfortably do over 300.
I also use a DC fast charger for the first time, shows you the struggles of being new to all of this but overall extremely impressed with this car.
See for yourself a real owners point of view, not a professional car reviewer or paid spokes person.

The Bolt has a one foot driving mode. Let up on the accelerator and energy of the wheel goes bacinto the battery. It is called regen. In runs with other EVs, it had the best regen of even the Tesla! This allows the car to go much further than it saysbon the speedometer screen.

"I commute 50 miles every day to work and back, which takes around 25 to 30 minutes if there is no traffic. However, most of the time it takes me an hour to get to work. After six months of driving, I calculated that my car's efficiency is 5.2 miles per kilowatt-hour. If I use my 2003 Honda Accord, it costs me $2300 per year for the commute. On the other hand, if I use Bolt, it only costs me $300 per year. By using the formula 50:5.2*0.14*222, I calculated that it would cost me $285 to commute with my 2023 Bolt EUV."

Good to know, Seems like it will charge faster at home on the 7kw level two sometimes but I haven't bothered to pay much attention to it. I had to drive to 5 different EVgo stations around nashville tonight to finally activate my "autocharge" 4 of the stations were either abandoned and not functional or locked behind a gated area and inaccessible (including the Titans stadium in downtown nashville) its a bit silly how hard it is to charge publicly within the "chevy branded chargers"

Note, this is only in warm weather. Our Bolt gets nearly 300 mile range in the summer, yet because there is no heat pump, that range is reduced to around 190 in the cold months.

During my first 300 miles, August through September, with my 2023 Bolt, it averaged 5 miles per KWH, which equals 325 miles on a full charge. The energy display showed my driving skill at +24. About half of that mileage was on the interstate at a speed of 61 mph, the same as I did with my Honda Fit. As the weather turns cold, that efficiency will decrease.
@Tron-Jockey

An EV's overall efficiency shouldn't decrease with colder weather but battery capacity will. Highway driving through colder, more dense air may cost you a small decrease in efficiency but the larger range losses in Winter will likely come from reduced battery capacity.

The charge speed wasn't the charger's fault. You were getting close to 40kw while you were on the phone with the girl and it slowed down later. That was your car requesting less power, not the charger not being able to supply the power. If the battery is too cold (not likely based on you not shivering in the video), it will charge slow and if the battery is heating up (probably what was happening), the car will tell the charger to slow down so the battery doesn't overheat.

I think you have the Tesla / Edison thing backwards. Also google the charge curve for the Bolt, you'll only get 55kW from like 0 to 45% then it tapers back, at 75% where you are almost, 25kW is pretty normal it seems. You gotta charge low in the pack for high power, this is how most of the cars are.
@unfinishedbusiness2manyproject
@unfinishedbusiness2manyproject 9 месяцев назад
Might be right about charge curve. I thought 55 was so low that it would charge close to max all the way to 80percent though. Pretty sure I’m right about Tesla wanting AC and Edison wanting DC… and Edison tried to show how bad AC was by electrocuting an elephant or whatever. But I’m not an electrical engineer, so maybe I’m misinformed.

Tesla is rolling over in his grave seeing Tesla branded DC chargers everywhere. But he invented the AC motor so its a wash for him. Edison just took other peoples work because you could get away with anything in the 1800s ha Another funny thing all the automotive enthusiast don't realize or want to know is that the electric car was around even way back then... edison himself was working on better battery technology for electric cars... so I guess technically he lost out to Tesla twice... AC infrastructure and cars named after Tesla even though Edison was pushing EVs.

But am I correct that the major nosebleed here was trying to use EVGo's autocharge without having first been authorized to do so at an EVGo charger? And that simply having the Chargepoint app is the route most folks would go if they weren't trying to burn through GM credits or set up EVGo authocharge?

Some company has to come along and make public charging better. We need to get rid of the app stuff and either make charging like filling with gas where you use your credit car or have a standard where you just plug your car in and it knows what car you are in and charge you automatically like Tesla. I would be fine to pay more on the road if I knew that the chargers would work 99% of the time and there wasn’t a bunch of hassle to get charging started. I thought I recognized the view of that Dairy Queen drive-thru. live in Paris and was there for the opening of that Chargepoint station in September and it was the first level 3 charger I charged my '23 Bolt EUV with. It rarely gets used although local business folks are hopeful it brings EV drivers to our little downtown area. As you probably know by now you're better off using both hands to wrangle that heavy cord. And if you'd tapped your phone on the charger it would've started up and you wouldn't have to guess which charger you were connecting to on the app. There are sister stations across TN (including Hohenwald). - If you wait to plug in until you are at 10% state of charge you'll get the full 55kw charging speed but at your level 25kw is the norm. The Bolt is the slowest DCFC car sold today but level 2 home charging speed is basically the same as any other EV.

Starting Jan 1 of 2024 if you can find a new bolt… they take the 7500 off at the dealership which is a better deal than I got. Because I’m paying interest on that 7500 and I likely won’t even get anywhere near 7500 due to my tax situation. So if you get a base model bolt with a full 7500 off. Out the door you could be about 20k…. Depending on finance rate and how much you drive (I personally save about $100-$150 in gas per month at least) your payment ends up being around like $2-300 a month give or take. Which by todays standard in buying a new car is crazy cheap for what you get. But I understand it’s still a chunk of money.

Do you know anything about charging curves ? When you charge at a high percentage you get way less than 55kWh. If you had been closer to 1-10% you may have gotten 55kWh charging but you had a much higher percentage when you pulled in to charge. The charging curves taper down as you get to higher percentages so that is why you were getting 25 kWh. You need to look at the Bolt's charging curve and that will let you know what you can do to get better charging at DC Fast chargers, Don't pull in to a charger with more than 10% if you want to get better charging rates. By the way, I could have done this trip WITHOUT charging and I would’ve had a full charge before the trip by taking 2 SECONDS to plug my car up the night before.

I agree with you... but if you add up all the time I have saved at not stopping at gas stations 50 times in the time I have owned the car, I am still ahead of the game. Its amazing just plugging in at home each night and not having to worry about stopping at a station ever depending on your drive cycle.

Okay video but you're driving when parked or parking skills are horrible. But still interesting video I gave you a like

Parking in the perfect position when having never used this charge I have no idea how far to pull in,,, I do not curb my vehicles so I think my parking skills are quite advanced.

The Bolt is an unexpectedly great EV value. Had severe (and snootiness-based) doubts about buying a GM Chevy product, but the 2023 Bolt has been a pleasant surprise. Warm weather range routinely above 300 miles. Have 18K miles on vehicle in first year. Score that for a win. On a different note: video is a snooze fest. Your soporific inane stream of consciousness lugubrious dialogue was maddeningly unbearable. Try edits, a subject-based narrative, and maybe you'll attract more than 24 subs. Maybe.

No. Thats what my videos are about. There is actually quite a bit of editing in it just to get to this point, but I'm not here to make motion pictures. I agree with you though it is boring. I have also been really enjoying the bolt though thanks for watching and commenting.

Ignore this Sesquipedalian's verbose attempt to critique your video. Another trolling ultracrepidarian suffering from sophomania.
