Awesome! I lived there 2003-2008. So many good places I had lunch, Boulder Bookstore, places I've photographed, where street performers did their things, an infinite number of good coffee shops. The Methodist church where i got involved with activities, volunteering for the soup kitchen. Nice houses. Fine weather, mild winters though a brief spell of cold in November & December, can have rather nice days in January. And still get a snow dump in April. Good times, wonderful place to live. I'd return, but since Boulder I've lived in Orlando and San Diego, and got used to ocean and palm trees. Can't find those in Boulder. But whatever, I enjoyed this tour!

I have such fond memories of Boulder. The hot dog stand at 1100 Block Pearl, I am almost certain, was set up by a family friend of mine, John Hargreaves and his mate Freddie, back in 1980 (the stand is still called Freddie's). John and his best bud ran the stall, interspersed with climbing jaunts into the nearby Rockies. John is still alive, but sadly his best friend died during these times whilst visiting France. Tragically an avalanche swept him off Mont Blanc. This was very nostalgic footage and I plan to return to this lovely place soon. Thanks. Ad altiora!

@@CityWalks Thanks for the quick reply. It was John Hargreaves and Freddie who set up the hot dog stall. I wonder if the current operators know its history? The two friends were both crag rats from here in the UK. Both were accomplished climbers, the two of them being amongst the first to climb The Old Man of Hoy in the Orkneys for instance. They both sailed to the USA in a 30' yacht in late 1979 or so, left it in Florida and then fell in love with Colorado, where the hot dog stall undoubtedly supplied some income whilst they climbed their way around the Colorado Rockies. Sadly John also has alzheimer's now in his 82nd year but I will get my mum to show him your footage of Pearl. In these weird times it's great how such a subtle piece of footage can bring such solace. I enjoyed your relaxing wander too, having visited Boulder several times and even got myself up Longs Peak. Keep up the good work and thanks again from England's Lake District. Ad altiora!

Your walk down Pearl St. early on a winter morning doesn't really capture most people's experience of Pearl St. (and why it is such a popular destination for tourists). It is typically much busier -- a very lively scene. For us locals, too much so during the summer, so we mainly leave it to the tourists (and enjoy it the rest of the year). Also, it doesn't split, and there's no Pearl St. parallel to the pedestrian mall -- it just becomes the pedestrian mall for a few blocks. During COVID they extended the pedestrian portion all the way up to 9th St., which has been great. Many of us hope they keep it that way, though I'm not sure all of the business owners along that new stretch agree. The many porches go along with Boulder being a very pedestrian- (and bicycle-)friendly city. You can just do a lot more on foot here than in many places and there isn't a big divide between people holed up in their houses and people out walking/cycling. One of the main reasons we love it here. What you encountered at 5th and Spruce is very typical of Boulder: cars can't go through, but bikes/pedestrians can. You find this all over. There's even a "secret code" for it: streets marked "No Outlet" (not "Dead End").

@CityWalks
@CityWalks 4 года назад
I think you'll find a similar spectrum of people no matter where you go. The state votes Dem as a whole bu that's mainly because of Denver and Boulder areas. @@williamkerr8836 Hi William. Bozeman has pretty much whatever you need. Plenty of healthcare, shopping, restaurants, movie theaters, etc. I personally prefer the lack of people (actually more people moving here all the time) over the variety and amenities in a city like Denver. I know people who prefer cities and that's, again, a personal preference. I don't feel like we have a lack of anything other than restaurant options sometimes. Stay safe.

Colorado seems a lot more developed than MT. Thoughts on that and if you think it is- why?
@CityWalks
@CityWalks 4 года назад
YES, completely true. About 30% smaller in area but almost 6 times the population. I'm not exactly sure why but Colorado was settled early by trappers and possibly because it was an easier land rout to California. Also, there have been a couple of oil booms that Denver played a central business hub for, and of course the tourism for skiing. Denver doesn't have a major river that would offer large scale transportation so it's a bit of a odd place for a city of its size.
