Dustin Davis from 3point8 performance was a father, a husband, an innovator, a leader, a subscriber, a RU-vidr, a Patreon supporter, and a friend. He's the founder of 3point8 Performance and a huge influencer in the Hyundai Genesis and Nissan community. He passed peacefully in his sleep early December leaving his wife scrambling to pick up the pieces of their family and his business. Right now she's doing her best to keep the good people at his shop employed, the customers happy, and trying to make sense of all of this to their sons. She's got some big shoes to fill right now. I've never spoken with Trisha, but I DO understand Dustin's self-less nature. He freely shared his knowledge in the quest of developing other people and inspiring them to build their dreams. This is our greatest responsibility in life after all. He was well on his way doing exactly that, and he gave an awful lot to all of us. His parts are everywhere. A lot of people looked up to him, and benefitted from his work.
Dustin did a lot for me. I wanted to pay my respect not just to Dustin for being my friend and supporting me, but for the difficult battle Trisha's currently fighting right now. A lot of people are counting on her this holiday season, and if you were searching for a family that really needs a boost right now, here is his GoFundMe page where you could make a difference.

Axle fires are actually a thing. I had one. In this episode I demonstrate rebuilding the outer joint of a custom CV axle that didn't need to be rebuilt because it was a used replacement, and swapping a CV joint pretty much requires it anyway. You're not supposed to mix axle greases, and there's no other way to put the correct amount back in, so... if a boot fails, rebuild it. Do it soon. Don't let it wait. It's not a hard or expensive job. Sorry I didn't cover the inner joint. Let me break one first.
I let this boot go for way too long. Nevermind that the grease leaks out making a mess and creating a fire hazard. The real damage gets done when condensation from the air outside eventually contaminated the grease, which decreases its load protection and promotes corrosion. This leads to joint failure. Joint failure leads to added friction. Friction leads to heat. Heat and petroleum products do a thing when enough of it is mixed. Science!
Now... most people just replace the whole axle. I can't. It's a shortened axle. A shortened axle is something that we all used to be able to do easily because there used to be a prevalence of people willing to offer that service, however; finding those people seems to be more difficult these days. Part of the reason why they don't is because most people just replace the axle. It's cheaper. But replacement isn't a service that I can even do, because I can't buy this part.
You'll see me measure things because I'm not going to quit trying to get a replacement made. I'm going to need one for my Colt as well. When that happens, this topic has been raised.
As for the rest of what happened in the video... really, the fast stuff I barely covered was the hard part. That's been covered, too. What I did before worked for a brief time, but as the springs aged it became apparent that I had nowhere near the amount of suspension travel I needed for this car to be safe to drive on public roads. It started chewing through lower ball joints, and something had to be done. So in 2021, the Elantra is back with yet another entirely new front suspension. This also fixes other long-standing problems with the Hyundai's timeslip. I now have room for LOTS more tire. The front tire is already bigger than the rears by a large margin, but this car is going to look really different soon. If I like what this modification brings to the traction topic, I'll probably do DSM coilovers so that I can balance the weight of the front end. It's an expensive thing to test, so these GR2's will answer a whole lot of questions in the meantime. It already answered most of them and I should have done this the first time. At least I know what didn't work. The track would be closed right now if it were ever open to begin with. I'll have to continue "alternative testing" until our circumstances here change.
My DIY parts washer video is here: • DIY Parts Washer
The previous suspension mods were done in the "Traction" series. This should be another episode, but it's about an axle. It's not about me replacing my suspension, remember? These are not the droids you're looking for.

Those clamps are called "Oetiker" clamps. They are very re-useable if you spread the crimp point with a pick or flathead screwdriver to get enough slack to slide them or the part they are holding off of the shaft or hose, then pop them apart and use pliers to adjust the crimp back into a square(ish) shape. I have 6 different styles of pliers for them, my favorite pair being the Knipex 10 99 i220. If I had to buy all of my pliers again, my first choice for almost every kind I own would be Knipex brand.

OMG I'm so glad you didn't try one of those godawful "2 piece glue together boot" kind. They are hit & miss beyond patience. I just did a reboot a few years ago, before my '89 OEM died from lack of grease. Yep, you read correctly- 32 years, same axles. Keep the boots intact, greased- they should last a long time. So nice to see you before Christmas, glad you're warm & safe! Merry Christmas to you and Happy New Year, Dear Jaffro.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 3 года назад
As long as you maintain the grease in the boot and don't quadruple its designed torque load, really they should last for the life of the vehicle. It's an extremely resilient design so long as the grease stays clean.

Jafro, first very kind of you to promote the GoFundMe for that man's family. I'm sure he is sorely missed. Second, not meant as self promo, but do you know the trick to put a hard object between the control arm and knuckle to pop a ball joint? I find it even easier than using any extra tool and far more reliable than hammering. I have a video if it on my channel titled Ball Joint Trick something something. Only way to get Subaru ball joints out sometimes and it worked on my DSM too if I recall. Third, I too have had a comically hard time separating CV joints from axles that are allegedly supposed to tap off with relative ease. There's affordable tool for that. Seems the cheapest one on Amazon is about $18 right now. Just search for CV Joint Puller. Only works for the outer joint with a threaded stud though obviously. Would have worked for your outer shaft though. Fourth, I too hate those band clamps. They never work just how you want them. This one time, at band clamp... I'll stop. I'm sure you probably know most of the above and I like your cheap solution, just figured I'd share in case. None of us know everything. Great video as always.

"No energy system can produce sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it. This universal truth applies to all energy systems. Energy, like time, flows from past to future." Manufacturing cars must be a heavily subsidised business, worldwide, since Ford T-Model, or no one can pay for the total energy put into them - an amount that orders of magnitude greater than the energy put into the Great Pyramid - in each car. Who pays for that subsidy on behalf of car owners, though? Finite fossil fuels - being the sacrifice, all along! Wailing. Thank You Jafro, very entertaining and inspiring, indeed.

The issue with the cv shafts coming apart is typically caused by the snap ring. if it rusts, it gets stuck. if its too soft, it gets stuck. sometimes they just don't come apart.

I've had exactly that problem -- a 1G replacement axle that turned out to be a bit too long. I decided to just wait until the old axle failed before trying again. That was at least three Nebraska winters ago, and the torn-boot axle is still going strong with no noises or smells. Of course, the lack of a nearby drag track is probably a factor.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 3 года назад
Now you know you can just swap those outer joints! ;) Once the noises start, that's when you'll start getting into this realm. It takes a lot of load and friction to take one of these joints out. The torn boot makes it happen a lot faster because the grease getting contaminated reduces its load protection, but it can take a really long time to wear one of these joints out. The fire thing was new to me. EDIT: My boot wasn't even torn. It did have a pin-hole, but It was mostly a problem with a bent clamp.

You shouldn't use brass punches on bearings. Small pieces of brass will shear off and end up in your nice clean bearings. Use a punch made from cold rolled mild steel. It won't damage the bearings and won't leave debris.

I don’t know if the DSM style Birfield joint is the same as my Nissan style axles, but you may be able to flip the cage to shorten the 2 piece AWD axle enough to use it. It’s a trick I used to get appropriate length axles in my 510 using Z31 CV joints and Pathfinder shafts.

Honda axles are full-floating; it makes them comparatively easier to tinker with compared to this. I was able to remove and reinstall a rear AWD axle in my Element without even undoing the axle nut!! I unbolted the diff and used a ratcheting strap to pull it to one side. Since the axles are floating I could just pull it out of one CV cup, pull it out of the other, clean it up, and reinstall the boot.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 3 года назад
Yes, but if you need to replace a wheel stud, you have to pull the whole hub assembly off, press out the wheel bearing, and then you'll have room to knock the studs out. Hondas have engine harness bulkhead connectors, too and that's another convenience as well. There's a lot that many manufacturers do well. If only we could take the best of everything and make one car. It would be the exact opposite of this car!

The secret to getting the joint off of the axle is 1) secure axle in a vice. 2) grab biggest hammer available that you can wield accurately. Mine a a 44 Oz ballpeen deadblow from snap on. 3) grab a beat stick. Mine is a stainless steel prop shaft from a Yamaha pwc. 4) place beat stick against the inner star of the joint and hit it like you got a pair. This is not the time to be delicate. Hog rings are replaceable. I have yet to damage a joint in 6 years of doing it this way.

Looks like those wheel nuts were done up way past 110nm, also for the shorter CV axle you may be able to get a old live axle axle cut to length and splined to suit the CV ends, have seen this trick used before, and it looked like it was 22mm or 7/8ths too long in the video or was that just some parallax error from the angle of the camera?

Jafro, you want advice? Hit up RAXLES for your axle upgrade. they take factory CV axles and rebuild the ends with quality parts. They won't strand you like those chinese FEQs. Also, i don't know anything about your car, but it looked like your lower ball joint bolts into the control arm. If it's possible, consider just unbolting it and pulling it from the control arm to save you time.

@Jafromobile 3 года назад
Raxles actually stopped doing Mitsubishi stuff about 9 years ago. I know this because I called them about this axle. They even remembered me from my GSX axles and even making this one for Jamie back in 2006. This is one of theirs. They're an epic resource for most every other import and they were always outstanding to me. It's just a change in the times. But I've got a lead out on a new resource that I need to follow up with on this. Yes, Elantra LCA's have bolt-on ball joints. It's unlike all the Mitsubishi stuff that shares the same platform. It's weird but in a good way!

Hey Jafro, could the toasted bearing (that boiled your break fluid a few years ago) have contributed to the cuff being so super stuck?

As much as I hate cv boot grease, it’s way cheaper to rebuild em. And the re-man axles are crap.
@Jafromobile

That axle joint was an OE unit from 1990. Who knows how many miles it had before being shortened, and then having 300hp applied to it for the past 8 years and 35,000 miles? I'd say there's nothing wrong with the factory stuff, it's rather tough! The replacement joint came from the stock 1992 GSX donor car I stripped that had 160,000 miles on it. Even well used, it looked brand new. I'd say the weakest link on DSM axles is the shaft.

Hello Jafromobile I'm watching Jafromobile well here in South Korea. I also have the 1991 Hyundai Elantra 1.6 version. Isn't it hard to get parts in America?

I see that this set of struts had some more meat on the lower hole, meaning you didn't need to implement the fix I suggested the 1st time you did it.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 3 года назад
These did indeed have more meat on them. I used a different washer material this time, too. I used manifold spring washers, and did a bit of back-filling over the slots. Not likely to blow the fronts of the holes out on this set. Warning heeded. What I also noticed... because the new spring rate caused by the different perch height - the car rides higher on the strut... extending it an extra inch. I have less of a camber problem to correct on this strut than the old strut being almost fully-compressed at its ride height. I built less camber into these, and I still have some adjustment room at the perches.

Guess what I found on my car today! Left drive axle badly leaking all over the place. Yes, they both make noise turning left or right.
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 3 года назад
Once they're making noise, the outer joints are bad. If they go clunk putting it in gear, coming to a stop, or make thumping sounds at highway speeds, then the inner joint is bad. It's your choice how you want to fix it, but if you wanted to save a bunch of money before the holiday, every car like yours in the junkyard is a parts donor. Messy Christmas!

Why haven't you just gone with some BC Coilovers yet? Why mess around with mix matching OE parts when you could go aftermarket?
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 3 года назад
Mostly because you try the $100 parts before you try the $1,000 parts. They're not even the parts for this chassis, and none of the rest of the stuff in the wheel well is, either. It's the difference between whether to spend the big bucks on the Eclipse or the Mirage parts, and now I have my answer!

Completely remove the rear doors. Weld in sheet w/crossmembers. Lose rear & passenger seats. Weigh all that up. I'm sorry- I'm thinking "Racecar" not "Fast Grocery Getter".
@Jafromobile
@Jafromobile 3 года назад
I think the subwoofers, amps and subwoofer box weigh a lot more than the rear seat and back doors. I'll probably remove those first, though the back seat is rather useless.
