Episode 43
This episode sees me converting to the Skyranger Swift that I’ve just bought a share in at Sherburn Aero Club. I’m carrying out the necessary few hours to covert onto type with Breeze Aviation’s CFI Mike Poole.
As you’ll see, it’s definitely the most challenging aircraft I’ve flown so far, it’s a real hands on aircraft. Totally different to the Eurostar. It’s also more powerful, being the 100hp Rotax.
Please note, my videos are heavily edited. As such, checks and radio calls will be regularly omitted. What you see isn’t always how it occurred and some scenarios may be taken out of context.
Please make no judgment based on these videos.
Thanks for watching!

I came from a Cessna 172 to an X-Air 582. I only learnt how to use the rudder in the X-Air. Made a huge difference. When I started on the Skyranger it was a much easier transiton, only becuase of the rudder work I learnt in the X-Air. Great video Matt! We all learn from these.

The universe does work in mysterious ways.. Iam in process in doing difference training in Nynja too based at EGBO . Looking at specific videos and yours came up 👍👌.

Brill! Good luck with the training, I’m finding the Skyranger a lot harder to fly than the Eurofox / Eurostar.

@@flyingwithmatt1986 I learned on C42 Which I absolutely loved !! Skyranger definitely need more rudder!!!

It's so valuable watching other instructors for the odd tidbit! Good to get a thrashing every now and then. 🤣

Enjoyed that Matt, I'm sure any other pilots transitioning will find this really helpful. Lovely clear video as well. I love it that your instructor insists on centreline discipline, that's a pet hate of mine when pilots don't lock on to it. Looking forward to the next stage.

Thanks Terry, I’m certainly happy with the quality after the switch over to GoPro. I’m at it again on Sunday so hoping to have learned a few things from watching the video back so I don’t have repeat the same mistakes.

I swapped from Eurostar to Skyranger and it's a steep learning curve, isn't it. You did a LOT better than I did!! Took me ages. I love Skyrangers now but that blooming rudder is a right pain until you get used to it and the 100hp acceleration seems pretty out of control too (Wouldn't be without it now though). Pretty sure the problem for me was that I hardly used my feet at all in the Eurostar.
@flyingwithmatt1986
@flyingwithmatt1986 2 года назад
It’s a big difference between the two isn’t it! I used to fly the Eurostar finger and thumb, and the lightest pressure on the rudder. The total opposite to SKR 😂

I have sixty hours on the EV97 and just bought a Skyranger and flew it 150miles home. It feels like you fly it with the rudder and just use the stick to steady it really. So different to the Eurostar. The stick was a bit sweaty after I did my first landing in it, all OK though, but struggled to judge the round out height a bit initially. It's amazing how quickly you learn when you have to though.

Even I was tired after that lesson 😄💜😇 I've heard that with 100bhp they're right rudder hungry, also wire/cable vs rods and bars (Eg C42) makes it more challenging. As your instructor hinted at when you're taking off you've barely time to say; "max rpm, airspeed alive, Ts & Ps good, rotate" before you're at 200' and it's flaps away. A GA jockey is still trundling along the rwy waiting for 65 kts to turn up. Unique set of skills flying a FW Microlight. In many ways 80bhp is more than adequate. I'm but an amateur though, I've done a few hours in GA, EV97s and C42s, GA is often more stable but being heavier the trade off is longer to get into the air (plus in a C150/152 40° of flap gets you into some small strips, but there's not enough bhp to get out again). The Skyranger is loved by many when mastered so it seems. In an EV97 with a stick in the left hand the flap lever is easier to deal with - the trim lever not so - I'm not sure if I'm a huge fan of centre sticks, I'll commit heresy and say that Eg a C42 is a bit of an ergonomic nightmare, Skyranger is a bit tricky too by the looks. Your instructor was right about centre line discipline and downwind checks (easy to forget the brakes are off, or that they need to work!). He was also right to point out the margins for low altitude loss of control (wing over into stall/spin), incipient phases. A lot to take onboard ✌️👍😉 Good aeroplane, easy to fly, but not easy to fly well? Should help with learning and making better pilots of those who fly it✌️👍😊🤞

What a great video which shows how intense circuit work in a new aircraft can be. I started my difference training on a C42 which is a lovely machine but am about to start building my 600Kg Nynja. Looks like it's going to be a steep learning curve to fly the Nynja well but I'll get there one way or another 😁

Thanks for the comment! Yes it was a big shock to be honest. The Skyranger is so much more hands on compared with the Eurostar and Eurofox. Good luck with the build!

Looked like a steep learning curve Matt, its amazing how differently aircraft flying differently despite having the same controls. Just for a flying experience, have you ever flown a glider?
@flyingwithmatt1986
@flyingwithmatt1986 2 года назад
I transferred from Eurofox to Eurostar really easily. But the transition from Eurostar to Skyranger is a lot more involved. It’s a real handful, the engine is a lot more powerful so it needs handling whereas the Eurostar was pretty docile. Flew a glider once, enjoyed it!

Hi Matt, enjoyed your vid, I’m just learning in a Eurofox in Lancashire but will convert to a sky ranger when finished. I put a vid up of some solo flying..Student Pilot Solo Pt 1 and 2. Francis Hudson. Give it a thumbs up mate, take care.

Hi Matt, well a year on and I’m guessing you have got comfortable with the Skyranger, they also side slip really well with that boxy shape btw. I installed a rudder bias on mine which helps in various configurations, whether two up or taking off etc. IMHO the 100 hp is the way to go, the climb out is it’s party trick.

Hi there! Actually, I never really clicked that well with the SKR.... I moved back to Manchester Barton and the Eurostar this summer. At the moment Im taking a break from flying until I find the right aircraft in the right place.

great video some scary moments for the instructor. lol i recon the plane would be far superior if it had a dual stick instead of the centre control stick wont be flying one of them for sure...
@flyingwithmatt1986
@flyingwithmatt1986 Год назад
Benefit of the centre stick, you know who’s in control! You also get more room for your legs. I wouldn’t go back to dual sticks

Is there 4 seat passager microlight aircraft?
@flyingwithmatt1986

Hi Ryan, no. A microlight is defined as a single / two seat aircraft.

The 100hp Skyranger certainly teaches you to use your feet. A real stick and rudder aeroplane. Stick with it and your right leg will be twice the size of your left.😁
