FSR and DLSS really are miracle technologies when they're tuned correctly. I can scale from 720p to 1440p in RE4 on my steam deck and it's actually playable. Plenty of jaggies, but I don't feel like I have Super Headache Glaucoma.
I pretend mine isnt there works fine 😂 jokes aside though i have an oled deck and this just destroys it. I cant believe what a handheld is capable these days unreall
If anyone wondered what was the difference between a 7840U and Z1 Extreme, here they are: They are identical chips Zen4 chips in all but two areas: - The Z1 Extreme has the XDNA AI unit disabled in bios for marginally less power consumption (providing max battery life). The difference would be negligible, however disabling it does not affect system or gaming performance (this feature is only applicable to compute/research development intended for workstation PC and laptops) - The Z1 Extreme has optimizations to operate at lower wattage. It can perform from 9w-30w where as the 7840u can only go from 15w to 30w. Z1 extreme is a custom 7840u designed specifically for handheld gaming devices. The 7840u is a more general purpose intended for laptops and mini-pc's. Of the two, the Z1 Extreme is the more efficient and equally powerful for a handheld gaming device. There would be no performance difference between the two in such a device, aside that the Z1 Extreme could get your more battery life by running at 9w when applicable.
I'm really happy that AMD is really pushing and developing these mobile chips and continues to make amazing APUs. I don't know I think we will reach a stage were getting a GPU will be a thing of the past.
Hardware altogether will be a thing of the past actually. Most computing power will be done in the cloud via servers and/or via AI over the net. We'll use super thin devices that fold, roll up, etc with larger screens for everything 😀
If you get used with higher end PCs, of course 30 fps don't look so impressive at all but this is pretty great for an APU, best I have seen prolly 1080p Medium. This is revolutionary that it even run at 4K.
@@kevinbbaddyeah it's crazy. Valve got ASUS to admit that a nonexistent issue is real and say that they're working to solve it even though it's not real.
@@trippytreereviews7687tbh ssd and SD card prices are really similar In my country, sometimes I can find deals of 512gb ssd for the same price as 256gb SD card lol.
Hardware and price wise, it is interesting, and it’s available from a large, widely known manufacturer. Shame Windows is hot garbage, hopefully official Linux drivers for the Z1E release soon, I want to see what ChimeraOS is like on it once the APU is fully supported.
Just because you don't have it doesn't mean that who does must hate it like you. I had both steam deck and ally. The fact that I sold the deck and considering selling my laptop after getting the ally should tell you how much I love the thing....stop being a hater and enjoy your deck quietly
@@setii2009able Ally fan boys act like no one has a gaming laptop. My nearly 4 year old gaming laptop outperforms the Ally. Yes , a gaming laptop is very portable , even bought an extra power brick to leave one at my main desk and one to play on the go. 7840u is a general purpose laptop apu which will get the same performance bigger battery , Asus model will have 65 Wh battery with an Oled screen, with a larger screen, thin and light.
Just tested 1440: Spider-Man remastered mostly high with fsr dynamic 30-40 fps, Baldurs Gate 3,medium, fsr ultra quality 30 -40 fps, Cyberpunk, rog recommended Settings(mix of highs and lows) 30-35 fps. As a console guy this is all very playable. I’m still blown away by this little guys power 😮
You mention at 1:04 that you're using the official asus charger dock and go on to explain why you use the adaptor, but in the video it's clearly shown that you're using a 3d party dock station
Why? So it gets super hot and lasts 20 minutes? I think the Deck establishes a good range for power draw. Now we just need to keep increasing performance in that same envelope.
Would you be willing to do a video on updating everything on the ROG Ally? I'm a little lost with all the different things, bios, windows, drivers, Amery create, and etc...
I'd love to see a video for beginner PC gamers about how to optimize Starfield for the Z1 Extreme running one of these high powered docks. Also maybe for the Z1 Extreme when its not docked, and some recommendations about which dock to use.
It's amazing how many people act like the only games that games exist are the latest and most demanding, when reality is we've got 10X more last-gen games that can run at 4K on this hardware. Whenever we get a next gen Ally 2 it definitely should come with a 4K120hz screen (most people will just use 120hz for VRR compatibility, but with a little more power we'll have a lot more games running above 4K60).
4K 120 isn't even possible by most full sized desktop GPUs (Actual razter) Maybe the Ally 4. I say Ally 2 maxes out at 1440p 60 low settings but prog 1440 30
@@budthecyborg4575 haha if by "modern" you mean games that are several years old then yeah, I'd agree they are still modern. The latest games is a diff story and that's what everyone refers to when they talk about max performance in devices and GPUs fyi
Amazing I have been look for this resukt. Too bad you didn’t show red dead redemption , any chance you can show it as well as Witcher 3 and snow runner if possible?
@@kevinbbadd I mean yeah obviously, I can still have complaints though. I still use my ally every day, just annoying that desktop performance is arguably worse because I have to use vsync
Any possibility of displaying the 1% Lows during Gameplay on the Performance Overlay (as we do with reviews on laptop/desktop GPUs). Because that's the true measure of smooth gameplay. Thanks.
@kevinbbadd Asus has confirmed themselves that there is thermal issues that cause the MicroSD card reader to have problems. The reader is in a Hotspot to close to the VRMs apparently.
@@kevinbbadd You couldn't have been more wrong, I would say "Nailed it, bro" (sarcasm). I bought a Steamdeck and returned in less than two weeks thanks to it's driver mess and awful screen resolution support. I was about to buy an Ally but I don't know why, it gave me a bad feeling. Bingo. Even an Aokzoe A1 has less problems that any of them (I own one)
Great content bruh. I just hate that ASUS is locking you in their walled-garden to get these options. That is such a crappy business model IMO. The charger dock is trash with only one usable USB port Ain't nobody got time for that.
Yh totally agree. A charging dock for 65$ for only one usb 2.0 and an hdmi like how? You can get docks much better than that. Other handhelds like AokzoeA1pro don’t even need them because we have a lot more ports. Just do display over usb c and you are good to go with your other 2 usb ports available.
Bears of the Bingdom emulation is really hard, 7800x3D barely able to run it at a consistent 1440p/60. Disappointed you didn't tested it, really curious about it as Ally is able to be docked as well, at >1080p/30 it'd be a truly switch killer.
Hi there. I have the ROG Ally and I run TotK at 1440p with Super Resolution turned on and FXAA anti-aliasing on and I get a near stable 30FPS. This unit IS a switch killer.
Just put a pre-order down for the Ayaneo Air 1s, will you be showing a video of it soon? 20W does the trick for me in most of the games I play so decided not to wait for a Ayneo Air Plus 1s, which I assume will have a higher TDP.
This is pretty incredible, but the rog ally is pretty expensive, if you spend just a little bit more, You can get a laptop that has an RTX 3060 or 3070 in it and then you could run Doom eternal over 100 fps on pretty high settings
Im really curious how the pixio px277 pro works as a dock/monitor combo for the ally? Just plug everything into the monitor, and run a usb c cable from the monitor to the ally and get full turbo? Im highly considering that monitor and curious how it works. Even a comment reply would be nice if you dont want to do a full video
Using my Ally Z1 on my 1080p monitor is smooth. When I play on my 4k TV, I'm running it at 1080p. Is this better than trying to push out 4k? I don't play high-end games.
It is crazy what is can do. It definitely struggles with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor though. 30-40 fps on 30W. If you're looking for content at all I'd love to see whether the Ayaneo 2S beats out the ROG Ally at max wattages. I've seen some videos suggest a 10-20% boost over the ROG Ally and others seem to show they're equal, so I'm not sure what's happening - perhaps it was due to the bios issues.
I’m curious how Games perform on an Amazon dock versus the asus one. Are we talking like a 10% performance increase or is it much more? Just wondering because I’ve been delaying getting a new dock, but if it’s a quite a jump a performance, I may get the asus one.
Maybe I'm missing something, but a dock really shouldn't have anything to do with performance on a direct level. If the dock can't supply enough wattage to power the device at full tilt it'll just pull what's missing from the console's battery. If you're talking about the external GPUs ASUS offer, that's a whole other kettle of fish that absolutely will boost your performance.
@@RifterDask I could be wrong, but I don’t think it works like that. If the dock can’t provide enough power, it truncates the amount of wattage pumped into the asus rog ally’s chip. For instance if I plug in my ally with the included power cable, the “turbo mode” is set to 30w. If I plug in my dock, the “turbo mode” is set to 25w. This is in the Rog UI showing me the wattage difference. My understanding is extra wattage should equal extra performance. I’m just curious how much extra fps I can get if I get their asus hdmi plug vs the dock I got off Amazon. Is that extra 5w meaningful? Or am I just wrong for assuming an Amazon dock would impact performance.
@@TheSearchForAwesome That's weird. My Deck just makes up the difference from the battery. The Ally must have some kind of hard limit on wattage coded in going by what the dock is able to provide. I want to say that any well-reviewed USB hub or dock capable of delivering 60 watts or more SHOULD do the job, but now I'm not so sure. Either way, always buy electrical equipment rated a little higher than the input/output you require for both safety and compatibility reasons. 35 watts 'in theory' doesn't always work out to 35 watts in practice.
@@RifterDask yeah I’ve heard rumors that it’s related to Asus’s software not cooperating with some 3rd party docks to get 30w. Not sure. It’s kinda clear as mud.
You should really do a video on a new Chromebook it’s been a while since you’ve done a video on a Chromebook eta prime and the power has increased tremendously emulation should be a good test.
Bro forgot FSR Frame Gen in some of the games such as CyberPunk and one feature that works for ALL DX11 and DX12 games: AMD FLUID MOTION FRAMES (AFMF) IT ESSENTIALLY CAN DOUBLE UR FPS
I think eventually apu will get a good as a desktop CPU and GPU since heat is limiting factor. Some Tech channels have already did videos saying desktops will eventually die out.
As impressive as that is, if you plan to play docked on your TV, I still recommend running it at 1080p. The reason for that is perceived resolution at a distance. With an average couch-sitting distance (7-9 feet) and an average TV size (55-75 inches) it is very unlikely you’ll be able to see the difference between 1080p and 4K. The text will look slightly less sharp at the most. Playing it at 1080p docked will also allow you to use the same settings for both handheld and docked mode. That’s how I’m playing when docked. I’m sitting around 7 feet away from my 55” TV and it looks great at 1080p. That’s also why 8K TVs will always be stupid. Even a 100” TV would look great in 4K, especially considering the distance you would need to sit at to have a comfortable field of view.
Idk man. I clearly see the difference between 4k and 1080p. I set my res no lower than 1440p. Tested it on both gaming and video playback. Horizon, NieR, and The Witcher for games and Eimi Fukada and Yua Mikami BR videos. 100% visible difference.
I get alot of crashes and freezes when docked to a monitor...using the rog 60hz power adapter wont crash in handheld mode..idk something about being docked
Wow man I can't believe I see so many haters hating on the asus rog ally smh ridiculous man just a handheld device is not even that serious lmao 😂😂 it's either A.some of these people can't afford it or B. Everyone's on that steam deck bandwagon a little bit too hard there Buhahahahaha smh 😂😂🤦 it's not that serious if anyone's paying someone to do a video on there that the device don't hate let the man do his thing I approve his videos on the Ally thanks man 👍👍👍😎😎✌️✌️👏👏👏👏
Would it be possible for you to try a m.2 to oculink egpu setup with an external boot drive on the Ally? (like one of those usb-c nvme enclosures) Can be a nice way of getting an egpu setup without having to pay for the expensive XG mobile.
I’m waiting for RDNA4 handhelds at least before I consider upgrading from my Steam Deck. As great as the Ally is, I really can’t justify spending that kind of money when I haven’t even had my Deck for a full year yet.
