Its more impressive than you think. The raw resolution and small details are there. The MAJOR problem is the lighting. You can't see any of it very well because of the poor lighting technology.
@@MythicFTW That is because parts of Halo 4's cut scenes are pre-rendered whereas this is real time. Had Halo 4 been real time, it would look much, much worse than this.
Nothing better. Halo launched the Xbox brand and 343 need to get Infinite feeling right from Day One. That tune should be the Scarlett start up jingle.
Madcoconuts Man I LOVE that song! I listen to that song regularly through some days and Digital Foundry coincidently includes it in this video! I never hear it anywhere else!
We're putting this content live now, but once again, RU-vid's encoders are struggling to keep up. Watch now at 1080p or check back later for higher quality and higher resolution presentations of this video.
Are you guys going to make a video on the future of streaming games vs playing on your own console? I think that would be an interesting topic. Enjoying your E3 coverage so far 👍🏼
I don't know abt you but this is really underwhelming as a next Gen show piece. The last of us 2 and even the new cod clip looks alot better. I'm baffled at how impressed DF reviewer seemed. I'd like to see a comparison with games like tlou 2, death standing, cyberpunk 2077 etc. This looks mediocre at best.
After seeing the gameplay today the downgrade is massive. Or Halo Infinite uses the same system as Halo 5 where cutscenes look much better than anything you see in gameplay.
Hopefully the final game will have ray tracing on the scarlet version. I'm looking forward to the next xbox and don't care about console war BS as I'm also looking forward to ps5.
Respect to all of you who truly know what gaming is, you love to play on all platforms even it can be too much of a stretc, but at the time respecting the choice which console si appealing too...unlike some out there who will always find a reason to shit talking about the platforms especially xbox
Personally I'm a sucker for pistols+hand models, the angle, the model of the pistol itself, how the character is holding the pistol. The shooting animations, recoil etc.
At 5:59 Master Chief is a bit of an arsehole. He opens the pod door and let's all the guy who saved him's stuff fly out and doesn't give a shit. Self centred much ❗️😜😂😂😂
I fell out of gaming before college a decade ago, obviously the platforms have changed and I’m hung up between the ps4 and Xbox 1. I know I will end up getting a new xbox but idk which games I will end up playing. I helped my younger brother beat rdr2 he did most of the levels but I rode from town to town for him :) I love first person shooters! We shall see
So much for all the time they spent making a new engine. What did it even help with? Almost every other major company’s engine has been adapted to handle open worlds at this point.
Not exactly. When it comes to polygons and effects maybe but the amount of stuff they can put in the virtual worlds increases drastically which leads to places the feel more alive. Especially the CPU plays a big role here for NPCs.
I'm cool w/ graphics as they are now tbh. I just want 60fps locked as an option in every single game. I don't even care if the res drops to 900p on NEXT gen hardware. I just want a solid, locked 60fps+.
@@lupefiasco653 bro what the heck?? What is it about all these toxicity towards people in this comment section?? Others don't care about people like you only have a reason to always attacks those whonsre into a specific game...sheeeesh
This game comes out in 3 months, and we still haven’t seen it running on Series X hardware! We’ve only seen it on PC. It’s as if Microsoft gave nobody devkits before the console launches.
Keep in mind that project Scarlet dev kits has not been released to the developers so this game might look better when it comes out:) it looks amazing now
@@democritusdiabdera2527 Sony is a year ahead of Microsoft in developing the next gen consoles because ps4 pro came out a year before the xbox one x. Sony had their chips last year while Microsoft just got their chips last week check out Aaron Greenberg on Geoff Keighley show post Microsoft E3 presser saying they were just getting ready to ship but I have no doubt they have PC spec to what they think Scarlett will be out to the bigger devs just not actual dev kits with the next gen hardware in them

and now after the actual gameplay: LMAO what a joke. Bad: 1. Lack of volumetric lighting / God rays. 2. MAJOR pop in problems 3. Lack of any ambient occlusion to give more depth to the environment 4. No Global illumination 5. Low resolution textures on enemies 6. Low poly scenery / vehicles. 7. Missing shadows from enemies 8. AI just stands there while being shot. 9. Poor sounds for the Warthog - it sounds like a Subaru. 10. Washed out colors that have very little contrast compared to the other halos. 11. Not showing us action packed moments in halo. 12. Not showing any multiplayer?? 13. Looks like minecraft style landscapes lol 14. Vehicles look like they are on rails Good: 1. Lots of new guns. 2. Open world 3. Its Halo 4. 4k 60fps (oooooo aaahhhh - to microsoft and 343 : 4k 60 means literally nothing when your game looks like this)
@@remphey I hope digital foundry rips them a new one and makes a tech video about this garbage. Its unbelievable. Looking at halo 3 and infinite side by side halo 3 looks like it has better colors and more detail than infinite.. xbox 360 was 0.24 TFLOPs. Xbox series x is 12.. that's 50x more raw processing power. How is it even remotely possible for 343 to make a game that looks so terrible on such a powerful console
I think the hardware gulf between Series X and One is just too significant for it not to hold back games. I think the game was downgraded because Xbox One couldn’t handle 60fps without potato graphics.
I think everyone forgot that the whole trailer of Halo Infinite is ALL in game graphics. It looks amazing and looks "next gen" compared to Xbox One and PS4.
Except unless you see dynamic shit happening like enemy ai or player input, it all might as well be pre-rendered, as the character models are often swapped out for higher quality versions during cutscenes, and any of these new effects could be disabled when the game comes out as they often do, such as Halo 3's reflective visor discussed in this video.
@@intrepidnick2939 He's absolutely right. It's even explained to you in this very video that Halo 5 used better assets during cutscenes so this is almost expected, not a long shot.
Lombax hey don't judge what gets people off! ...so I haven't played Halo before. 😫 I remember waiting for Halo 2 to come to PC... kept waiting... then I just lost interest and never picked up a Halo game ever.😅

@@usul573 HBM has been around for a while now yet the technology has not seen a suitable reduction in manufacturing cost, ultimately why the Radeon 7 is so damn expensive. The super high bandwidth is amazing for compute workloads, however, it's overkill when gddr6 can compete for gaming workloads.
@@frasermanley9903 Ah I see that now thanks. Some more moderately priced Radeons are going to be using GDDR6 but perhaps a few might retain using HBM. Nvidia seems to have no interest in it and doubtful that consoles will use it. Gotta wonder at what point does the amount of memory and the memory bandwidth stop affecting performance.
Still no dedicated VRAM gpu will be bottlenecked to hell Funfact: the n64 had a GPU that could rival the best GPUs on the market at the time, but the fact that it shared its RAM with the CPU drastically limited it
Must have watched this trailer a million times and still learned a lot from this video. Watching at 4k/60 is astounding. The level of detail is crazy. The pilot seems like a really cool character, I hope he's a pertinent part of the main campaign.
I rather developer focus on AI and environment simulation than resolution and RT. Wind, rain, dynamic time of day can add new layers of gameplay not seen in previous gen games along with intelligent NPC and enemies.

Does it make much difference? There was no input, so most likely the actual gameplay won't look this good. They could be using models that are 5x more detailed than actual gameplay, like many games already do for their cutscenes.
@@chrisrichfield8906 The whole sequence runs at 60fps. And it's very likely a cutscene running with the ingame visuals, because you can still see some flaws. Too many to be pre rendered etc.

So that helmet view is actual gameplay confirmed? Because it looks incredible! Look at those hands man...gunfights are going to look so rich and realistic especially with the added ray tracing.
The sequence is confirmed as the opening cutscene of the game. Nothing has been confirmed about whether it's running in real-time or not. If I had to guess, I'd say it probably was captured in real-time on PC hardware, but they haven't nailed down the final visual fidelity of the game enough yet, to declare it as anything more than "game engine footage". Phil Spencer said at E3 that they still don't even have 100% of Scarlett's specs locked down yet. Say it's "in game footage", then cut stuff back in optimization, and you've got the "Ubisoft downgrade" controversy on your hands. Better to keep expectations in check and pleasantly surprise people next year, versus over-heating the hype train now and having widespread disappointment if they have to cut some stuff back.
I'm a PC gamer as well and have been rocking a 1080ti for a while now and that entire scene when Chief was in the ship was some of the sharpest imaging I've seen. The Scarlet will be a beast.
beasthunt Well even if it’s the same spec as the full Navi GPU (it isn’t due to price and apu set up) it would rival an rtx2060. You can watch Amd’s e3 reveal of Navi, it’s available now.
@@yanceyboyz I watched it live, but we are talking about the console APU and the 2060 is still below below a 1080ti. AMD dropped the ball again on that; we are looking for something to dethrone Nvidia in the 2080 and 2080ti area to get competition better at the higher end. I'm not sure what the X is rocking but it's probably close to a 1070, which is already a 2060 level so that's not changing much. The CPU portion is what's holding the Pro and X back now. So consoles don't have far to go. We'll see.
If I imagine this level of graphics in a fully open-world game, running at 4K and 60 fps then yes, it's next-gen clearly. And we still haven't seen the outdoor environments which looked gorgeous in last year's teaser.
That's the beauty of consoles- game Devs develop their games with specific hardware specs in mind, thus knowing what and which graphical feature to push to take full advantage of it. "Halo Infinite" looks like the best looking video game ever made to date. That Master Chief hand fidelity is insane... I kinda lost it a bit at the studded bits mentioned at 8:26. Mind blowingly detailed! Didn't catch so many of these details when watching the trailer. Yet another great DF analysis! 😁👍
Just wanted to call out a small thing: I liked how Alex handled the puff of smoke around ~5:00 - a discussion of how it *may* be a realtime effect, with the conclusion that it's likely just a hand-authored visual. Informative on the state of the art, but also showing a good understanding of the realities of e3 demos :)
It's probably a real time effect and one of the advantage the scarlet version will have over the one static smoke effect since this game is also comming on Xbox one.
Halo Infinite will still be released on Xbox One. So i would not expect "true" next gen only quality here. But with this in mind, it's still looking really great in my opinion
The aim for 60 fps will also have a massive hit on how far they can push the graphics too. If this was a 30 fps game you'd be seeing much better graphics but at the end of the day the focus was always going to be as a competitive shooter not a graphics showcase. I expect other games like Fable to really go ham with the graphics.
Tbf this is the third time they've shown that in a Halo trailer. The first Halo 2 trailer showed real time reflection on the visor on the OG Xbox and obviously the Halo 3 trailer from e3 2006 they referenced in this video did as well. I do think now is the time but considering I've been burned twice before on exactly that feature I'm not getting my hopes up lol
Thanks Alex! Awesome video and eyes brother! Love these types of videos and analyzation of games. Please Alex continue to put out these types of videos...much appreciated brother!🤙
In all previous Halo games I got the impression that Chief is not a big guy among regular guys, rather he always seemed like a regular guy among dwarves. In this trailer finally a regular human looks full-sized and Chief looks like a giant.
What didn't you like about it? Looked good enough to me. I'm not a fan of when games use stuff like TressFX to basically over-animate hair - this would especially be true here, where the guy's hair is probably oily as hell by that point, and not going to move around a whole lot.
DF sets the benchmark for review sites. Keep up the good work guys, it's much appreciated by those of us who are looking for more than mindless opinion pieces.
@@JaiRoccasGaming Flying simulator, not really a game per se. But you're fine to have your opinion, and me mine. If everyone thought the same then the games industry would be very boring place. Plus, Digital Foundry break down graphics and technology of the games, that's their thing. And even though Halo Infinite does look great, no doubt, MS Flight Sim is something I think they'd like to look into
@@timhamock2996 You're out of your mind. The alpha effects and materials alone are some of the best I've ever seen, if this is real-time captured footage.
I'm actually glad the shadows weren't perfect, because stuff like that suggests this was captured in real-time and may be representative of the game's actual visual quality. No reason to under-sample the shadows if you're just pre-rendering something in the game's engine.
All is set to lowest while they cut off the amount of polygons of every single object and drastically reduced the resolution and draw distance along with lower resolution shadows.
I will believe it when the game will be out. Right now, all I see is a cutscene running on something else than the target console, in a very constrainted environment (basically 1 very small room).
Honestly this is far from impressive coming from 343 . I will be severly disappointed if the game looks like this (look at the pilot's face for reference ) they set the bar way too high with Halo 4 which came out on the measly X360 hardware almost 10 years ago on an old engine
@digitalfoundry I hope they watch your video, I want this game to have Halo 1 and 2 style physics more than anything. Also if they ended up having every multiplayer map, from all the old games included, that'd make my life. I want a renued intrest in the franchise for us old school people and for the newbies to understand why we love it so.
My next PC will have an AMD CPU for sure. 16 Cores in Mainstream? Even for 750$ I'm totally in. But in GPU department AMD is lacking hard behind Nvidia. Nowhere near the performance of a 2080 TI and the 5700 XT is as high priced as Nvidias GPU's without RTX which is coming to Cyberpunk 2077 and is featured in the next consoles. I'm still awaiting 7nm Ampere next year though.
I think AMD's Ray tracing implementation is going to be as apparent as with RTX for now, especially on the consoles. I think AMD thinks that there is a few more years of work before we start putting full real time Ray tracing in games
Matthew Brice even though I enjoyed Halo 4 thoroughly I gotta agree with you, I never even thought about it but the combat against AI is quite boring haha
And the Convenant are not even the worst combat experience in recent Halo games. Those other folks bouncing around the screen seriously suck.... Let's hope Infinite is a return to proper form.
I mean sure in your strange opinion but for me the ai is consistent if not a whole lot better although I will say halo reach felt like the last challenging halo so I guess I agree to disagree but overall I think it's about the same
@@ItJustWorksPodcast I remember getting hyped watching a Bungie vid doc on Brute pack AI for H3 and they were great fun to play against. The AI in reach was fun to pay against as well. Halo 4/5 all I remember was pretty graphics and many of the AI especially Elites getting stuck on boxes and scenery with no awareness that I was behind them. And the silver robot things sucked.
I imagine ray tracing, if its implemented, wont be shown until late next year, both to optimize performance, and be properly be used as a Scarlett tech showcase. The trailer from last year was also an in-engine demonstration and it seemed to have real-time reflections on Chief's visor.
Recent E3 reveals of the past has made me wary of graphical fidelity of the final product released to the consumer. Although the trailer was nice, I was hoping for a glimpse at the gameplay, I hope it is as fun as Halo 3.
Aaahhhh...but the Xbox One X runs Halo 5 so amazingly well. The Ine X and PSPRO should have been the machines to launch in 2013. Microsoft and Sony for the first time in their gaming history went cheap and made a profit from these machines on day one. It looks good to investors but fails hard in the long run. Think about it the 360 and PS3 were running far too long; However, when they were launched they were powerful for their time. We are going back to those days of expensive hardcore machines that are monsters out of the box day one. Four times my Xbox One X's power...yes pleas we have two of every console including the enhanced machines hooked up to two 4K UHD screens in our master bedroom). I will be picking up two PS5's and 2 Xbox Scarletts on day one...oh yes I will. The cost is irrelevant, this is what we do and we go big. If these consoles can truly display in 8K properly then I will replace the 4K screens (only if it is native not upscale).
Finally someone who knows what's up as i agree man it's Xbox Scarlett & Ps5 both day 1 at launch as these will be insanely powerful ultra high end Pc level machine's which will be far more powerful than any current Pc tech on the market right now...... For example the Xbox Scarlett is using an absolute monster ass full RDNA Hardware accelerated Ray Tracing Navi 20 based 5900XT Gpu which will have about 15.6 teraflops which is 4 times the power of the X when you factor in Navi has a nearly 35% ipc increase over polaris which gives a 15.6 teraflop Navi Gpu the equivalent of a 24 teraflops Polaris Gpu as that's what Microsoft means by 4 times more powerful...... Xbox Scarlett will also have an extremely fast 8 core 16 thread custom Ryzen 3700x 3.6ghz high end gaming Cpu plus pcie 4.0 X570 chipset motherboard, pcie 4.0 ultra fast custom ssd drive, 24gb gddr6 system memory, etc as Pc gamers won't have anything anywhere near the insanely awesome next Gen tech, and or anything close to the monster power, and performance of Xbox Scarlett as this is gonna be the fastest, and most advanced gaming machine ever created of which Pc gamers will need to spend at least $1850 dollars in 2021, and or about 3x the price of Xbox Scarlett to build an equivalent Pc...... The average custom built gaming Pc's won't be able to match Xbox Scarlett for at least 3 to 5 years after launch as a result of Xbox Scarletts 3 to 1 price to performance ratio over Pc
