Transforming a large basement into an UltraHD home cinema room with 2.35:1 screen, 4K projector 10 seats and fibre optic star ceiling.
High spec cinema, retro styling, combined with very contemporary touches. View the total transformation in just over 5 minutes. a big thanks to Fenella for her imaginative interior design work on this project / fenellajanedesign and of course our own web site is www.ukhomecinem...
The finished cinema area is about 6.7 metres from front to back and slightly over 5 metres wide at the widest point . The height of the original space was 2.32 Metres. This project was spread out over several months, speed wasn't the priority and the seats were on a long delivery time.
The projector is a VPL-VW550. We needed an ultra HD projector with motorised zoom , focus and lens shift plus lens memories. This was necessary for all of the different aspect ratios to work at constant image height on the 2.35:1 screen. Absolutely everything is controlled on a single remote (and also from the client's iphone)
these work via the control processor, This includes control of all of the lighting.

@X2 JoelMK 33 that doesn't make any sense , the screen is a solid piece of fabric called blackout cloth that has multiple layers of rubber covered with polyester and cotton, no light is getting through that projector screen because it was designed to block light, the lack of paint behind the projector screen is still baffling because there is no reason they shouldn't have painted the whole wall

True. Most guidelines (CEDIA CEB 23, THX, SMPTE, Dolby etc) suggest that there shouldn't be any aisles down the center line of the screen, but maybe the client preferred that, or perhaps the main seating is the second row and the stairs ensured an unobstructed view.

Try DTS:X with a minimum 7.1 speakers but with ceiling spkrs, 11.2 is better. I like DTS MA 7.1, it fabulous for the money. Unfortunately, most 4K blu ray movies are Dolby/DTS 5.1, so sad for this. Thanks for your comment. We are a tiny company , but we are doing home cinema projects constantly. Most of our projects are a lot smaller and lower value than this one. Even if someone just wants a home cinema projector supplied and installed, we are happy to do that. The videos take a lot of work and we would have trouble finding the time to make more of them. We do have a time-lapse recorded but not yet edited, of a much smaller project , just fitting a projector based home cinema system into a fairly modest lounge, chasing the cables into walls etc , but without changing the look of the room. We may manage to publish that at some point.

@iforgotwhatiwasdoin
@iforgotwhatiwasdoin 3 года назад
Right? The work and detail with the construction process was immaculate, but when it comes down to the earth-shaking moment intensifying audio experience, a 7.1.2 set up is what you're rocking? That's a large space, and if you're dropping those K's, invest in more audio gear and HEAVEN FORBID get more subs. 1 powered sub isn't enough to fill that space. Now I did see 2 subs, one was ported from the front seen when they were assembling the screen, and the sub I see in the end result is sealed. Not sure if they were both implemented, but still. Whatev, bet it still sounds pristine.

@Microwave414
@Microwave414 4 года назад
Sometimes it's not about having the best placement, sometimes its about fulfilling the wishes of the person commissioning the job done and maybe that's what they want and maybe what they want is to sit that far away or possibly they wanted it to feel open and large. It's not what I would want either but you have to put into that into consideration. The thing that drives me nuts is the due fact that side surround speakers are not in the same orientation so the left surround is going to sound far lower than the right surround.

Yeah, I love when the dialog comes from my feet... er, um, I mean, the steps to the back row. Great place to point your center. SWING and a miss. The entire rest of the room is very nice, except then you put the screen against the wall with speakers around it. You even had the depth built into the room and you still opted NOT to put the speakers in REFERENCE PLACEMENT. (Behind screen) As beautifully done as the rest of the space is, you went with towers reflecting light just next to the screen, 1 sub, and a center practically on the floor. You guys are focused on carpentry work (didn't sound proof the entire center of the ceiling) to bother using some budget for 3 towers and 2 subs BEHIND the screen. FFS you didn't even have to build it out on this project. The space was already there! So, so close. Just... why? Wtf. Dropped it on the 1yd line.

I am really surprised that no acoustic treatment was done to the room. I know there are "absorption" panels in the ceiling. but they won't work. Sound is going to be reflected from the mdf panels. The rockwool has no purpose at all except for the sound coming from upper stories, which should not be an issue in any house younger than 100 years.

Hello, visually it is a super nice cinema but room acoustically it is a disaster! Why were no Super changes, Basotect absurdly installed? Why was no room acoustics concept designed? and why did not you install any acoustically transparent canvas?
@dodaxo1234567890roll
@dodaxo1234567890roll 6 лет назад
D K You seem to be making an unreasonable assumption that acoustics were not studied or checked. The only way to know whether acoustics are good is to stand in the room and check. The room clearly has irregular shape which is highly recommended for good acoustics. It has a mixture of hard and soft surfaces again ideal, it has carpet and star ceiling both of which are acoustically absorbent. The video shows and the titles list the installation of acoustic panels rock wool and traps. Good acoustics involve creating balance, many cinema rooms have far too much acoustic absorption.
@hazchem1
@hazchem1 6 лет назад
I agree with DK and I speak with experience. My room is 6.8m by 6m at a cost of around $30k. Built by me. The Centre speaker is at the wrong height and is too small for a room that size. Stereo speakers (Dali?) are too close to the walls and too low on the ground and that super soft looking carpet will be killing the sound at the front of the room, the soundstage will suffer too. Looks like someone with a lot of money but not really any idea about acoustics. Surprised the Company installing it thought it was OK. I would have made the screen smaller, brought the stereos in and built a raised platform to raise the speakers a half metre and finished the stage with a short pile carpet tile. I would have put in presence speakers and used Dialogue Lift to centralize the vocals.
@poppys33d
@poppys33d 6 лет назад
tom spud I agree. That center is far too small and low (at least angle it upwards for goodness sake!), the FL and FR should be toed in if at all possible (which it was before screen size was selected - looks not possible now). All surfaces of speakers/sub should be covered with reflection-reducing velvet. Also, the screen essentially touching the ceiling will have quite a bit of reflectivity. The ceiling paint, no matter how good it is, is not going to absorb that light bounce. And that Blu-ray shelving is a real eyesore. Should at least have doors or a sliding mechanism to hide it. It’s a shame since much of the room is quite pretty. Personally I’d be pretty upset with the room if it were designed this way. But I recognize to each his/her own.

You may be right in theory but in reality, there may be no discernable difference if you did a blind test. A lot of extremely expensive high-end speakers fail double-blind tests. The same is true of extremely expensive wine. I'm very wary of audiophiles and their claims like gold speaker wires. You do sound like yoiu know what you're talking about but I don't know if it makes a real difference.

I've over 20 years of experience in this department. Something a simple as toeing in the FL and FR speakers, moving them an extra inch away from the rear and side walls and angling other speakers like Centre, LP and RP make a massive difference. Most decent manufacturers will always give recommended speaker placement distances to allow for a variety of factors such as air intake etc. This is especially important with big floor standing speakers. The composition of wiring, not only in speakers, but the interconnects between initial source and amplification makes a huge difference too, especially on expensive systems. Interconnects will change treble, bass, clarity of vocals, separation of instruments, accuracy and sound stage and there's is a bit of expertise involved in knowing what cabling is suitable for different brands of hardware. All in all it makes a huge difference, there's no theory about it.

No acoustic treatment at all!!? Why MDF on the ceiling? Why not put fabric as you already have some kind of Rockwool there?? (plus MDF joints will crack in few months). Platform for seats is hollow??!! That would resonate soo much.. Nothing on the walls too. It might look OK (just OK) but I doubt it sounds any good.
@Ukhomecinemas

We installed acoustic absorbing panels (shown in the video), the platform is substantially built and covered with thick carpet, the star ceiling panels are also acoustically absorbing, We offered bass traps but the customer decided against having them, room acoustics sound great.

@@Ukhomecinemas How did you do the star ceiling. It's the main reason I clicked this video lol... but It looks really deep, but when you were building it's evident that it isn't. Optical illusion?

Once again I see that people do not care about movies picture quality and experience of immersion! All they want is a big room show up and bombastic sound! They spend lots of money for things I consider useless, instead of making things that would be really important for the picture!

Yes that would make sense, to have the best seat in the middle on the front row, but we offered lots of different layouts and this is the one our clients preferred.

For what was spent I'd of blown out that ceiling if nothing is above it. We have 12' ceilings and I'd think twice especially with a drop down Trey ceiling. The end result looks good. I'd probably go for a laser projector.

Adding a dvd shelf, not closing the space off, and not planning ahead for subwoofer placement are keeping this from looking like a much more expensive theater space. Lots of high quality work and materials but the multicolor DVD array next to the screen is distracting and tacky. Obviously the speakers aren't integrated into the walls on this setup, but the subwoofer especially stands out as a large front-and-center box. For lighting, sound dampening, and sound quality reasons there would be massive benefits to closing off that half-wall. Still an impressive setup.

Very nice but I would've recommended stairs on each side (left/right) of the seats, as they do in movie theaters, to accommodate a more centralized visual experience, also move the screen forward, to not seem sunken into the wall.

@UK Home Cinemas great set up I have 3 questions hopefully you can answer them for me... 1.-how many inches of cantilevered mdf you have? 2.- Any link, name or picture to the cantilevered edge that you glued to the mdf? 3.- I will assume that the LEDs strips where put inside an aluminum channel with a diffuser at the cantilever facing up and hidden by the cantilevered edge that was perviously glued ? Thanks in advance, Hopefully you can answer my questions :)
