I'm enrolled in your White, Black and Green Background course, as I'm shooting with a black background. I've done ok in Automatic mode, but if I switch to manual I can't get things quite right yet. I may ask some questions over on Ruzuku soon.

@raylynch8419
@raylynch8419 7 лет назад
Hi Marlene, Thank you for your reply. While I think the TZ-110 is a very good camera, I believe it has one serious defect. And that defect is that the camera seems to be reluctant to use higher ISO and accordingly, in some situations, it uses a shutter speed that is far too low / slow. My camera has decided to use a shutter speed as low as 1/20 in some cases (and even lower), rather than use higher ISO. I know the TZ-110 has good image stabilisation, but that only fixes camera movement - it does not (and cannot) fix subject movement! Obviously if the camera is going to use a shutter speed as low as 1/10, then if anyone (or anything) in the photo moves, then the photo will be blurred and the photo will probably be ruined. And while higher ISO will result in some noise, that can easily be fixed in any of Photoshop, Lightroom, Topaz etc. But once the subject is blurred (because shutter speed is too slow), the photo is probably useless! I have tried to bring this to the attention of the people at Panasonic, but they refuse to discuss it with me! I would be interested in your comments.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
In full auto iA mode and also Program mode this will happen. You can likely turn the thumb wheel to change the auto settings. BUT in your case (as freezing subject movement is important) I suggest you shoot in shutter priority mode. 1.) choose your shutter speed needed to freeze subject movement, 2.) choose ISO according to the brightness situation, 3.) choose the WB according to colour temp (daylight, cloudy, etc), and then you're in full control and not relying on the camera to make what are creative, and important choices.
@raylynch8419
@raylynch8419 7 лет назад
Hi Marlene, Again I thank you for taking the trouble to read my comments about the Panasonic TZ-110, and for your good reply. What you say makes good sense (although it is disappointing that an otherwise good camera has this unfortunate issue. Surely the engineers at Panasonic would realise it's a blunder to allow a camera to choose a shutter speed as low as 1/10 when the solution is to bump up the ISO a bit). Cheers and best wishes, Ray (No need to reply again - you're no doubt very busy.)

Do you have a video on the Lumix TZ100? - as several points I could not follow on mine. I couldn't see how to move the green square. Also, when you go into a function, nobody seems to explain how to come out of that and go into another mode;. Thanks.

Hi Dazzy, Happy to hear this. BTW you can slow down video playback if people are talking too fast. Or turn on Captions to help you follow along. If you are lost in the setup menus you can often just half-press the shutter button to get out of the set up or playback menus. Sorry I don't have the TZI00. Check out Graham Houghton. Marlene - Thanks for answering my "bird" image question so quickly, but you gave me two different answers. One was to use Post Focus, the other was to use Burst mode. I haven't bought my camera yet, I am considering a G9 or a Gh8 - suggestion?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Sorry. I guess I assumed your birds would be moving-flying etc. When I think of post focus it's mainly for inanimate subjects in a busy scene where you want different areas in focus such as in the studio or landscape scene with many foreground objects. Plus it's recommended that you use a tripod for post focus in case of any camera movement.
@maggiedormer1208
@maggiedormer1208 7 лет назад
Hi. I have a GX8 and want to get into flower photography with my macro lens. I will try out post focus to grab a number of images with different focus points. My question is, can they then be stacked into a single image in Lightroom or will I have to do it in Photoshop?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
Hmm, I've never done that but it's worth a try. I expect in PS. Not sure if LR can stack into one final image. Most people use post focus to get "shallow" depth of field in a chosen area. If you want deeper DOF, (which is what people often use focus stacking for) you should also try using a small f/stop i.e. f/16 or smaller if you have enough light. That will get you started with more (deep) depth of field.
@richardmeade9842

If I want to take images of birds at a needed and want to select the one most in focus, which feature is best to use 4k burst or post focus, etc

Post focus is only for stationary subjects. Burst modes are what you want for birds and other fast moving subjects.
@herrbriggs22

Hi Marlene, thank you for your videos. They are great. Can you choose 2 or more subjects to focus on in one pict, with this post focus stuff?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 8 лет назад
+Courtney Briggs Thanks Courtney. I would say yes, if those objects are in the same plane of focus. If one is far behind and one very close, and you have shallow depth of field, probably not. Another thing you can do is shoot with a smaller aperture f/16, f/22 etc. so everything is in focus, (deep depth of field) but then you'd have to manually add the blur, if that's the visual effect you're looking for. If you don't care about the blur, then use Aperture mode (not in 4K Post focus) and shoot with deep depth of field. I hope that all makes sense.

That software is Adobe Lightroom CC. Part of the Adobe Creative Suite photography plan which also includes Photoshop CC. It's a subscription that's available for US$10 per month and you always have the latest version of LR and PS. You can sign up for it it online at Adobe.com as a download. Hope that helps. If you don't want a subscription, try the consumer version of Photoshop, called Photoshop Elements.

If I where to set up a custom function on my G7 with post focus, and choose 3.5 as an aperture and I inadvertently zoom out to 5.6. What will had? Thanks for you great videos!!!David
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 8 лет назад
Hmm, not really sure I understand your question, but.... I say just try it for yourself. Takes longer to write that question than to try it out. You don't even need to have a Custom Function set up. Set your camera on Aperture Priority at f/3.5 using widest angle zoom. Zoom out and I bet it will go to f/5.6. Am I right? Let me know. :) Thanks for you comments. :)

Great video! I just heard about Lumix Post-focus today and your video helped a lot. A question. Is there an easy way to make everything in focus after I took a macro flower photo using post-focus?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 5 лет назад
I have a video on Focus Stacking that might help answer this question.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h2dMXYueQQc.html BUT you can also take it off post focus mode and choose a smaller f/stop (f16, f/22) for better depth of field. This may or may not work depending on the lens you're using. Longer lens=less in focus. I have a video on the three things that control depth of field, if you need more info on that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CbSkMVvhSrY.html So basically you're saying you don't want bokeh so do the opposite things to what I do in the video, to get more in focus. Hope that helps.
@KacsaKazmer33
@KacsaKazmer33 3 года назад
Nice video Marlene, very detailed, thanks! My question: how does it work with objects/models standing farther? Can I actually use post-focus as a bokeh option? Can I make the background/environment blurry enough with it? (Lumix TZ100 is I wanted to buy, f/2.8 - 5.9). Thanks in advance.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Hi Greg, You don't need 4K Post Focus to do that. Depth of field is controlled by 3 things: Focal length, Aperture and Proximity to your subject. This video I made a few years ago, explains that in more details. So even if you use Post Focus, you might not necessarily have shallow depth of field (bokeh). Hope that clarifies things a bit. Thanks for your question.

John Blyth Hi Marlene, Thanks for the informative info on photo stacking. Just one question, if using the Panasonic GX9 will the final merged photo be at the maximum 20 mp size?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 5 лет назад
Hi John, Thanks for your question! Short answer: No. The Limitations are: Internally processed focus stacking uses the Lumix 4K and 6K modes. Basically you’re shooting a video and extracting frames. As a result you are limited to 4K or 6K sized photos. If you need larger photos you may want to do manual focus stacking - taking individual photos and merging to one file in Photoshop. But that’s a lot of extra work.

4K Photo does things like Post Focus, Burst and Pre-burst and it records a video file which you save/extract (or combine) photo frames from. 4K Creative video mode is just like 1080P Creative video mode, in which you can control f/stop, and shutter speed, WB, ISO etc. It's just recorded at the larger 4K resolution.
