Thanks for such a clear and uncluttered presentation. I wonder how it's possible to do the selecting outside of the camera, though, since its screen is a bit small. I have fiddled around a bit with Elements and a Video Editor, but it doesn't look quite so straightforward as the Lumix TZ80 makes it.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
You can zoom the preview on the camera to see it larger. And I tend to grab more frames than I need and discard the ones I don't want, after the fact. You can also grab individual frames using Adobe LR. Not sure about Elements. Possibly Premier Elements will work. But most video editors should be able to grab a frame as well.
@BusesFan
@BusesFan 6 лет назад
Yes. Corel VideoStudio indeed does manage it, I have just discovered, by doing a 'multi trim' of the tiny MP4 video.. But overall I think that following your guidance and doing the selection via the camera's interface would probably do the trick a lot faster - and perhaps more efficiently.

Amazing feature and very helpful in making sure one catches the perfect moment in time. Wondering if after saving the chosen pictures one has the option to delete all the others photos from each session from the the card on the spot automatically without having to manually go through all the photos and selecting the ones to be deleted. Thank You for a Great Presentation.
@ImageMaven

Hi, Since 4K photo modes result in video files (MP4), you can delete the whole video file after extracting the frames you want to keep. That way you don't have to delete hundreds and hundreds of individual frames. But make sure you select the right file. Do a test 4K photo file before getting started on a large amount. Hope that helps. Cheers!

Thanks much for the excellent explanation of taking 4K photos as I am new to it. I got frustrated as I am still on the learning curve. Your video is very clear and precise because you actually showed the youtubers about what buttons to press and the process of extracting the photo. How about shooting 4K video? Can you elaborate a bit on that as well?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
What do you plan to use 4K photo for? In the various burst modes, it's very useful for high speed or action photos that you can't normally capture with regular burst modes. If you're shooting things that don't move, you don't need to use the 4K Photo modes -- except for the Post Focus -- then you definitely don't want your subject to move. As far as 4K Video, you also need to be able to handle editing such huge video files. So I suggest doing some tests first to see how that goes before filming a huge project. I'm not a pro filmmaker and I don't think that 4K Video is suitable for my kinds of RU-vid videos. Maybe for some client work and b-roll shots but for my educational videos, it's overkill and the extra editing time and storing all those huge files isn't necessary for me -- but may be for you. I'm mainly an action sports photographer, so I do use the 4K photo mode. Hope that helps. And thanks for watching.
@erebuss8390

Actually I had never used a Camcorder before and had no videotaping experience. However, my major usage would be taking scenery pix like sunrise, sunset, or sea waves... E.g. the sea waves do fluctuate, and there is a magic moment that it will bounce and I never know when it's going to happen exactly. That's why 4K photos/ videotaping strike my fancy. I am not that high-tech after all, I couldn't even be able to learn the tricks of a Nikon D3300 features. So I don't really need a high-end one and my expectation is not that high. My other concern is to take pictures at low light inside my house since if I turn on the lights, sometimes the reflection of the lamps get into the picture. As far as videotaping, my usage is for family gathering functions, physical exercises demonstration.... In sum, my main concern is if I turn off some of the lights inside the house to avoid light reflection from the lamps, I would be able to achieve good quality pix. Another is I do enjoy taking nature scenery pix but I don't really need anything like timelapse. My last thing for now is to videotape my own activity like exercising, videotaping my Mom's cooking process. As my parents are aging, I really want to take some family videotapes to cherish for lifetime. Yet as I mentioned above, I have no Camcorder/ videotaping experience, I am paranoid as to how to videotape with the camera without being shaky. I am not going to take any action sports videos, not to mention film-making. Thank you very much for your meticulous reply.

Excellent video - great job. Question - after you select one or more images from a 4K burst, do you then go back to delete the original 4k burst with all the images? I assume so, but how do you do that and identify it so as not to delete the one you selected?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Great question. So as not to accidentally delete files, I generally keep the 4K mp4 of the burst sequence on the memory card for a few months until it's full and I reformat. I do back up on a hard drive as well.

You can delete the MP4 file that contains the series of images. The jpg you extract will remain on the card. Download the jpgs you're keeping to your phone or computer before doing any deleting -- just in case.. And maybe practice with a set that doesn't matter before deleting the bunch.

Marlene - thanks for these great videos! I'm working my way through a new TZ90 that I got specifically to take to Alaska to photograph whales, eagles, puffins, etc. So, potentially all fast moving. I'm still unclear whether 4K photo or 4K video would be the best choice. I want to pull stills after for prints. Thanks!
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 5 лет назад
Before using 4K photo modes, try the regular burst modes. I find that for normal shooting, it's fine. The advantages are that you get full sized jpgs at 10fps. With 4K they are only 3328x2496 in 4:3 aspect ratio. So I expect the full sized files will be better for prints. But if you want the hyper-fast speed of the 4K burst and pre-burst modes, definitely experiment with the 4K. Make sure you test everything out before your Alaska trip so you don't waste time and miss shots. A certain amount of testing is definitely recommended for the various 4K burst modes. And don't forget to use a fast shutter speed if you're extending that lens to it's full zoom length. In the case of this camera, I'd shoot at 1/1000second when fully extended to avoid camera shake. Have fun.

Excellent series on 4K burst modes ... thanks Marlene. Is there a way to save all images from a burst mode shot in one go ie without having to go thru and select/save individual photos?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Glad you're enjoying the series, Martin. I don't think you can save all the images automatically via the camera. I've tried. But if you don't extract them via the camera, you can do so in software such as Photoshop or Lightroom. And perhaps that will be a quicker workflow if you have many frames in that 4K (or 6K) "burst" video file. If I do figure it out "in the camera" I'll get back to you.
@MartinLangley

@ImageMaven

Hi Martin, I heard back from my contact at Panasonic. There is an option in the Playback menu called 4K/6K Photo Bulk Saving. This allows you to save up to 150 images (5 sec) from a single burst file at the same time so you do not have to do it one by one. Not sure if this is available in all Lumix cameras, but it is a feature on the Lumix G9. Hope that helps. Cheers!

Very clear explaining, but I would like to ask you a question, to take photos or 4K videos do you need a special memory?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Great question. Yes, you should get a good quality, fast memory card with a U3 rating. I have a video here, that tells more about that. All the numbers can be a bit confusing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uh9h2yZnUNQ.html That video is 5 years old, so you can get even faster cards now. But the ones I recommend in that video will work too. I use 64GB cards now. You also need to be able to read the memory card on your computer. If not, you can plug your camera directly into your computer when transferring photos. Hope that helps.

On the Linux LX10 4k burst mode does it automatic set the camera to optimal conditions or do you set the camera up to your specs in manual mode or aperture mode and then hit 4k? Thanks
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
I use Option 2. Not sure if the LX10 allows this. But try to set the camera how you would normally shoot Manual or Aperture. Keeping in mind that you're shooting 30fps so you need a fast enough shutter speed. I actually shoot in Shutter priority mode for my sports stuff. 1/1000 second or faster on a sunny day when using 4K or 6K (in the G9) burst modes. for the other 4K modes, like post focus, you can use a slower shutter speed. Best to experiment with what works in each situation for you. Hope that helps! And thanks for watching.
@dj-7154

what is the burst mode like in the dark low light? i shoot at indoor sports events
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Burst mode is not the issue. Shutter speed in low light is the issue. Burst mode will work wherever you are shooting. But indoors, to freeze action, you need enough light. So you will have to increase your ISO substantially to get it. The faster the sports, the higher the shutter speed and the higher the ISO you will need. A fast lens will also help. f/2.8 should be the slowest lens you use. f/1.8 would be even better. Have fun experimenting!

Nice, very nice. What mode do you generally use for 4K Photo? Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority or Manual?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
Thanks for watching. As 4K is generally used to capture action photos, I suggest Shutter Priority. Manual mode would work too. In all cases keep your shutter speed fast enough so you get the full benefit of 30fps.

@MasonWhite1994
@MasonWhite1994 6 лет назад
Does anyone know if 4K burst mode providea any greater detail/clarity/sharpness etc than simply taking a still from a 4K video? Or is it more an ease-of-access type thing? If I want to film a 4K video (with sound etc) and also have high-quality stills, it seems not to be possible with 4K burst mode (no audio and sped-up playback), so I want to know whether pulling stills from 4K video mode will provide as much detail.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
I know! It depends on your subject and if that subject is moving. If it's not moving, no need to use 4K Photo mode. Video will be fine. 4K Photo burst modes are meant for very high speed action. You can use super high shutter speeds i.e. 1/2000 sec or faster to freeze the action, similar to what you'd do with regular burst modes, but you have the added advantage of being able to shoot 30 photos per second. If you shoot video of moving subjects at super high shutter speeds you'd get jittery video playback. Typically we shoot video at shutter speeds of 1/60 to 1/250 second to avoid those jitters. Anything higher and playback might look jumpy and that's uncomfortable to watch for long periods of time. So if you have a fast moving subject you will get slight blur and that makes watching a smoother experience. BUT if your subject is moving quickly and you take a frame from that 4K Video file, it will likely be a bit blurry. Our eye doesn't see this in normal playback though. So if your subject is moving use 4K Photo mode. If it's not you can grab frames from 4K Video mode. Hope that helps. Do some tests before shooting a big production and see for yourself.

Marlene. I have a sport/martial arts channel where I cover Kendo(Japanese fencing) matches. I just upgraded to the lumix G85! I'm unsure if I should shoot my video in 4K 30FPS or 1080p 60FPS. Lighting is good at Tournaments so shutter speed of 120 is ok. Will 4K 30FPS at 60shutter speed be ok and smooth for explosive action or should I just shoot 1080p at 60FPS 120shutter speed?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
I guess it all depends on the final use of your video file. If you aren't intending to take still photos out of your 4K Photo or video then I'd shoot at 1080p. 4K video is a pain to edit (as videos) unless you're using high-end computer and storage. Rendering takes forever! Plus I expect you'll be shooting longer clips and that will fill up your memory card pretty fast too. Do some tests to see if 1080p is going to do the job for you.

Thank you for this! I am learning these modes on a Lumix ZS100. I like to shoot musicians on stage under stage lighting. I typically shoot in program ( P) mode. The colors and intensities of stage lights seem to make things difficult (in general, not just 4k) so I get many blurred images. Do you have any tips on manual shutter and exposure settings for that, especially that that will optimize 4K burst modes?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 года назад
If it's blur from the motion of the performers, as opposed to out of focus shots; Shoot on Shutter priority and increase your shutter speed until you don't see any blur from the moving performers. A good starting point is 1/250second. Test it out before going to your next performance. You will likely have to raise your ISO to compensate for the faster shutter speed, especially if your lens isn't too fast - ie doesn't open up more than f/4.0 or so.
@quartzimaging
@quartzimaging 4 года назад
@@ImageMaven Thanks! I usually shoot with a monopod with stabilization switched on, so I think the burring is mostly from performer's movement. Previously when I set speed to 1/250 or faster, I often get very dark images. I've avoided setting ISO greater than 1600 because higher levels could lead to noisy images. I will continue to experiment. I suspect the basic issue I have is not enough glass, which I accept because I'm not into shelling out for a pro grade lens. The zs100 specs indicate f5.9 is the best it will do when fully zoomed. Part of the fun for me is seeing how much performance I can squeeze out of a pocket zoom. I expect using 4k burst modes will help to capture "prime moments" on stage, but I wonder if those modes really offer a "free lunch". Is it reasonable to expect that 4k modes will give me images that have the same quality as single shots (with all settings fixed manually)?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 года назад
@@quartzimaging Exposure is exposure, whether that's on 4K or regular sized files. But yes indoors I expect you'll have issues with low light. How about just putting it on L or M files size and use the regular burst mode. That's probably enough burst for what you're doing. The other option is to wait until a peak moment, that has perhaps a millisecond of a pause in the performers movement and bang! Jam that shutter down and hopefully you get a motion free shot with a lower ISO and shutter speed at f/5.9. Going to be a challenge though. I recently got a 15mm f/1.7 for indoor skateboarding and I have to say even then I'm pushing ISO 3200 to freeze the motion at 1/1000s. Luckily I'm using a camera (Lumix G9) with good low light performance. And p.s. Image stabilization won't likely add any benefit above 1/60s, especially on a monopod. In fact some cameras cause out of focus photos when using IS with a tripod, (I've seen this in my classroom with my students) so you may get that same effect with a monopod.

My advice is rather vague as I haven't used a gx85 and compared side by side with the G9. Have you considered the GX9? It's next generation and came after the G9. Anyhow, you can download the user manuals for each of the cameras from the Panasonic website. Google search will get you there. Or maybe DpReview website has more information for you on your specific questions. I don't have access to a lot of gear. Just the stuff I buy and use myself. Sorry I couldn't help more.

@Stalled-wm3qd
@Stalled-wm3qd 7 лет назад
Ah well, if you like! You did skateboarding here which has its own challenges to catch the exact right moment. However, 7 fps on my Canon 80D with a 55-250mm(88-400mm 35mm equivalent) lens is not enough to get the ball on or near the foot every time. And I can't afford or justify the expensive cameras/lenses that do 20fps. The Sony RX10 Mk 3 does 14 fps and has a longer zoom but is much more expensive and has a few drawbacks as well compared to the FZ2000/2500.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
Do you shoot jpgs? I do. It's the best way to capture sports because you can get more fps and your buffer doesn't fill up so fast with the jpgs. Now that I've been shooting skateboarding a lot more, I can anticipate the peak action and don't use 4K that much. Ball sports are more difficult to predict though.

@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
Yes, fast shutter speeds work fine. That's what I do. 1/1000s is my usual shutter speed for skateboarding. You can experiment with the focus settings. My camera (Lumix GX8) focusses very quickly and rarely misses a frame, even when I'm panning or moving the camera around a lot, so I just keep it on AFS single shot focus but have all the focus points enabled. If that doesn't work for you try the continuous focus AFF, but that's better with subjects coming directly towards or away from you. With a wide angle lens there is less issue with focus as your depth of field is really deep, so pretty much everything is in focus anyhow. I also tap my LCD to enable the focal points at a certain part of the frame if the camera is having difficulties finding my subject. But I don't have to use that technique very much. Hope that helps. Shooting skating is so much fun! Now that I know a bunch of skaters, I often work one-one on shots rather than just randomly grabbing them. That's when you'll get the best shots. Are you a skater too? I have a few blog posts about shooting skateboarding too: www.imagemaven.com/how-to-shoot-skateboarding/ and this one about the grip I use: www.imagemaven.com/xgrip/

Marlene, With 4K Burst mode what is the actual time taken for shooting each image? 1/30th of a second? If so, the image of some sporting action will surely be blurred. We all know that you need around 1/1000th of a second to freeze fast action like someone running and kicking a ball. Or are you able to set the exposure so that it is set at whatever you want it to be (1/1000th or faster) or are you restricted to the video fps of 30fps? This is very important. If you are restricted to the video fps and you want to get a sharp photo then you are going to be disappointed and it will be blurred. This was demonstrated perfectly well in another video showing 50fps in the FZ1000 where all the pics of the playing cards flying through the air were all blurred. Your pics of skateboarders are sharp though.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
No, not 1/30s the frame rate is 30 fps, meaning 30 frames at whatever shutter speed you set. That is the joy of 4K photo. I use 1/1000second for outdoor skate photos, same as my regular stills. But I'm able to capture more frames per second than the regular 12 fps (or whatever your camera max is) when using the 4K Photo burst modes. Hope that helps! Thanks for getting in touch.

Is it really something revolutionary or is it more of a gimmick? Would the 4k burst mode outperform the Nikon d500 in terms of capturing action shots?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 7 лет назад
Pretty much all Lumix cameras from the past year onward now have 4k Photo modes. And 6K is out now too. Yes, 4K burst really does work. I'm not sure about outperforming the d500 as I've never made a direct comparison. I shoot sports with a Lumix GX8 and even when I'm on regular burst mode, of 12fps shooting full size jpgs, the camera focusses super fast, and on a dime. I'm used to shooting action close up so I study the movements of the athletes and anticipate where they will be moving - as do most action photographers. With more experience, you can shoot less frames. I'm usually good in 2-3 frames. I don't need all 12 to capture the peak moment. But if you're new to action and have a hard time judging the timing or the location of your subject then you can't beat 4K and 6K Photo modes. Why don't you rent a Lumix and a good pro lens and do some testing. (That is recommended for Nikon shooters too.) Have fun.

Did you access the buttons through the Drive Mode? You need to be in Picture "taking" mode, not in Playback mode. Press the shutter half-way to activate the picture taking mode. the 4K menu will come up in that screen. If not then you must have something locked out in your menus. Also, check to see if you have the latest firmware. I'm using Ver.2.0

Also, I don't think it works with RAW files, so make sure you are on jpg.

Yes in drive mode and yes I always shoot raw. However, the camera automatically switches to jpeg when in 4k burst mode. I'm not sure what the problem is but I've figured a way round this. Turn the dial to Ai mode, select 4k burst as you describe, then turn the top dial to manual mode, then you can make manual adjustments to the setting but the camera still remains in 4k burst mode - which is what I want. Thank you and I wonder if other viewers to your channel have encountered a similar issue.

Please you guys have to learn that I have absolutely zero material about all of this in my native language and i do not completely understand everything you say so PLEASE making subtitles available for your videos help me A LOT to comprehend your content, and it's not a big deal for you to do this. Thank you.

Good grief. Good info but opening music far too loud and the echo on voice is distracting.

I personally feel that there is no distraction throughout the entire video (opening music and voice echoing). But you are extremely nice to reply to this person's complaint. Nice gesture of yours.
