Had a blast of a ride! Would highly recommend this adventure to anyone! It’s something you just have to experience for yourself!
From the Royal Gorge website:
There’s nothing like the true beauty and raw power of being up-close-and-personal with a locomotive. Enjoy the ride of a lifetime upfront with our engineer in the cab, a very special place to take in a one-of-a-kind view of the Royal Gorge. Our engineer will share fascinating facts and history about the Royal Gorge and this historic Route through the Colorado Rockies. Guests remain in the Engineers cab throughout the journey.

My dad ran passenger trains for the B&O. I would ride with him, and one trip had the train back into DC union station. No radios then, a signal line with a flagman standing on the rear platform, an air- hose with a button on the end in his hand. Press the button, and the release of pressure in the signal line would activate a small whistle in the cab of the locomotive. The train about the same length as the one shown in this video. One toot clear. Dad releases the brake and opens the throttle, in reverse. Accelerates to 40 mph. Another single toot, another clear. Two toots, an approach, reduced speed to 25. Another two toots, another approach, now entering a complex of interlocking switches, the train making a twisty path through the cross-overs at 15 mph. Another two toots, dad sets some air, opens the throttle a bit. The locomotive passes the end of the platform, 5mph or so and slowing, Another two toots, pause, then one more. Dad cuts throttle and we stop. A few years later I talked to a yard-master who flagged that job as a young man. He described it as a butt-clinching experience.

I road this train with my brother living in Canon City ... a beautiful ride, and nice, repectful people, too. I lived in Canon City 1975 -1979. No tourist train back then.

This is an awesome train excursion. While short, only about two and a half hours, it is most enjoyable.

@@johnelliott3650 yes it is! Would recommend it to anyone! I’ve done both in a passenger car and locomotive for this train ride!

@@gm16v149 this is a song that came with my editing software (Filmora). The name of the song is “Blue City Lights”, but Filmora doesn’t say who the artist is… sorry. Hopefully the song name helps you a little!

This is the old Tennessee Pass line that UP abandoned in the late 90s, it was one of the most dangerous passes in the US, Royal Gorge operates the only active section on the line.
