4K drive from central Aomori city to Sukayu hot spring in Aomori, Japan on Feb 9th, 2020. Sukayu is known as one of the snowiest places in Japan. The wall of snow along the roadside is getting taller as the car approaching Sukayu.

Sukayu (酸ヶ湯) at 890m above sea level is known as the snowiest place in Japan that is accessible by car in winter.
It holds the record of the highest snow accumulation 566cm in 2013 ever recorded by JMA(Japan Meteorological Agency) weather station. and its annual accumulated snowfall exceeds 20m in a certain year. (recently 1996, 1999 and 2006)
It had 330cm snowfall on my visit even though there has been little snowfall nationwide in this winter (2019-2020)
Sukayu Onsen(Hot spring) locates in such an extremely snowy area.
However, it's a very well equipped traditional Japanese style inn with excellent traditional style wooden large bathes. You may not be able to believe that you are in such a freezing area while soaking in the bath.

I previously used to live in Toronto, Canada. However, after visiting the northern cities of Japan, such as Sapporo and Aomori, I found out that there is much more snow than in Canada. Extremely Cold air from Siberia passes through the Sea of Japan, forms snow clouds, meets the Japanese high mountains, and brings heavy snowfall to these cities.

酸ヶ湯は冬の厳しい気候の中で施設内は天国のような快適さがあるので、すごく贅沢に感じられますね。次回は泊まってみたいです。

2月16日から23日まで青森市に滞在し、酸ヶ湯温泉の回数券で通いました。 22日は雨で雪が解け、凍る箇所があり、31:00の長い上り坂で、登れない車がありました。23日の朝は、より道路が凍ると思い酸ヶ湯行きを断念しました。予定では、酸ヶ湯から黒石方面に降りて、東北道で神奈川へ帰る予定でした。

I love your video. I enjoy driving in fresh snow. Sadly, here in Europe we have less snow each year due to global warming. May I ask what car are you driving? Is it AWD? I noticed the car drove very nicely with no slips in such a heavy snow.

We had less snow in the previous winter but are having much snow in this winter. This car is a CX-5 FWD. Thanks for the fresh and dry snow, my car didn't slip until Sukayu.

Wonderful video! So beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing. May I know how did you access Sukayu - like what road did you take? I tried searching google maps from Aomori Airport to Sukayu Onsen area / Hakkoda resort but they keep showing me that road 103 is closed in winter.

Yeah, I know Google Maps has kept showing partially wrong road info. R103 from Sukayu to Towada is closed in winter, but R103 from Aomori to Sukayu remains as opened in daytime. only closed at night. and also there is a possibility that R103 is closed temporarily when a snowstorm comes.

Some cars went by you so fast - are they wearing chains or studs to stay safe at such high speeds on such a snowy road? Also I never saw your wipers working, so how does your screen stay so clear when it's snowing, is it just melted by the screen heater? I like the way that you stop to let faster cars go by, very sensible.

They should wear studless tires. (stud tires are banned) snow here was dry and not so slippery. The camera was placed on the roof. That's why wipers didn't disturb the view.

I apply water repellant to the lens in the previous day when I take snowy drive videos. It doesn't get iced if the temperature keeps below 0 degree and the snow is dry enogh. It soon gets iced when driving along the coastline for just a few minutes or when the temperature is high.

Yup, Japan is one of the snowiest countries on earth There are many excellent ski resorts. Near Sukayu Onsen is Hakkoda Mountain Ski Resort, really great

青森県民です。もちろん道路の白線は見えないので、なんとなーくこの辺が中央線だろうな〜と予想しながら運転しますw片側2車線でも同じです。よくぶつからないな…と我ながら思う😂

対向車も後ろからの後続車もほとんどないし、除雪車もみえないのに、どうやって車道を除雪しているのでしょうか？１日に何回か除雪車が通っているのでしょうか？その費用は酸ヶ湯温泉の観光の収入から出ているのか青森県の県民の税金から出ているのか、考えると眠れなくなりそうです。

撮影してない時に除雪したに決まってるだろう。酸ヶ湯温泉までは国道なので県民の税金はもちろん、地方交付税等の税金で除雪してます。小学校の授業で習いますよ。

@@kazuhiko3338 すいません。……小学校では習いませんでした。……普通は小学校ではそういうことは教えてもらえませんので……。。知ってる小学生も、あんまりいないと思います。税金から出ているなら、青森県の他の道路も、雪が降る度に全て除雪しているんでしょうか?……地方交付税って、結構な額なんですね?　それと、青森県民て、思ったよりお金持ちなんですね。……いろんな意味で、勉強になりました。ありがとうございます。
