Welcome to another snowy journey, this time on the world heritage listed Albula Railway. With it's 55 bridges and 39 tunnels, it is one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railways in the world. The centerpiece is the 5866m long Albula tunnel, which at 1820m above sea level, is the second highest alpine tunnel in Switzerland. As you will see, a new Albula tunnel is under construction beside the old one, which will replace it in the coming years.
For those who are unaware, the Rhaetian railway company has the largest narrow gauge (1m width) network in Switzerland.
The gradients are included in the upper right corner in the same format as they appear to the driver. The arrow indicates whether the gradient is up or down, the larger number is the promille value (1/10 of 1%). You will also see station names with their altitude, tunnel and bridge names with their length and year of construction - as well as other interesting information along the way to improve your viewing experience.
Our journey ends in Chur, the terminus station of the SBB normal gauge line from Zürich.

The scenery is simply smashing. But I'm afraid I'm most taken by the amazing engineering and construction, hanging the roadbed on the side of this most challenging terrain. All those tunnels, and those beautiful stone arch viaducts, all built at the beginning of the last century without heavy construction equipment. Just surveying the route in that terrain was a wonder. Thanks for sharing it.

I agree.. just surveying through these valleys is a feat in itself. So these viaducts aren't newbies, huh? This entire railroad infrastructure never ceases to amaze me. Gotta be some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet.

I don’t know how my hubby found these beautiful train rides, but thank you! The engineering from 1875 thru 1915 has been remarkable. The mountains are awesome. Now when someone said a family member fled over the mountains into Italy from the Nazis, I can see it was not just an easy hike. Wow!

There is another narrow gauge railway from Chur up to Arosa, at roughly 1500 meters above sea level. Another beautiful train ride. Very calming, and stunning views. /edit: Checked your videos, you did that one already. Thanks, my dad really is going to love that. He is an absolute fan of that train ride.

Die Gleise liegen zwar nebeneinander, das Stromsystem ist aber unterschiedlich (15kV 16,7Hz bei der SBB, 11kV 16,7Hz bei der RhB).
