Decided to use a big-screen 4K TV as a PC monitor, but not getting good image quality, or windows scaling is too large? Then watch this video because I will show you what settings you need to tweak on your PC and TV to get the best image quality on your 4K TV that you are using as a PC monitor, this video also covers what kind of hardware you need to get at least 4K 60Hz working on a compatible 4K TV.
I am using the 50" Samsung FRAME TV and LG UH770 for demonstration but the settings are largely the same for every UHD TV in the market.
Before watching this, I am already assuming that you have connected your TV with your PC using a good quality HDMI cable, DVI or VGA will NOT work for 4K 60Hz.
Chapters:
Intro: 0:00
Prerequisite: 1:10
4K 60Hz Hardware Requirements: 1:45
Change the size of text and apps: 4:20
Make the mouse pointer size bigger: 5:25
Change the HDMI input tag on your TV to PC: 6:05
Enable Input Signal Plus for Chroma Subsampling: 8:13
Tweaking sharpness and other stuff: 10:13
Run Clear Type: 12:03
4K 60Hz gaming: 12:33
4K 120Hz gaming in the future: 13:20

Thank you so much, this is the most comprehensive TV-to-PC monitor guide I have ever seen on the whole internet. I always feel some kind of eye strain after staring at the TV after a while, the screen is too bright, the color is off, the input lag, weird motion blur, etc. Although I have a different TV, this helps me a lot, thanks again! PS: except you, every other tech RU-vidr always feels like they trying to sell me the "coolest, hippest, expensive" hardware.

So I want to THANK YOU! In 2022 this video was of help. I just got my first gaming laptop and the screen was to small for me. So I got an LG 43in 1080p TV for my needs. However after months of noticing it wasn't crisp I found this and the input tag saved the day. As soon as it was changed to PC BAM! LOOKS BEAUITFUL. Thank you friend!

Thank you so much, the HDMI PC input tag might seem irrelevant, but it disables artificial picture enhancement which reduces the input lag and gives you the best 'PC monitor like' experience.

Thanks for the very informative video. I have one question though. I have 10th gen i5 laptop with integrated UHD graphics. but like u said in the video, HDMI port is 1.4. will I be able to get clear text with the hardware i have with 43 inches 4k TV? I understand that refresh rate will be restricted to 30 Hzs but that is fine with me as long as the text quality is not compromised. I dont play games and watch very little movies. office work and reading text is my first priority. thank you. eagerly waiting for an answer.

nice info! I came here cause I just hooked up my desktop to my 65" Sony oled. The picture looks awesome and the computer set everything correctly on its own, no tweaking needed. I did of course still have to change settings just to see what happens, every little change I made just made things look bad lol. I changed the display text from 300% to 150% and the tiny text was unreadable from my couch 8' away. I slightly increased the mouse pointer and it turned out to be over 3" long. I guess maybe it depends on the size of your tv how close you are to the TV and maybe even the graphics card in the computer IDK but the windows 10 300% recommended setting was dead on for my TV.

This is great but I’m left with one question still. What if you have a custom display profile for calibrating a 120hz monitor. Is there a way to disable the profile easily just while using the tv as a monitor? Or maybe the better question is does the ICC profile affect the hdmi output or does it use it’s own profile?

Just got a 43" 4K TV and been using it as my main display (dual monitor setup), and I have been liking it quite a bit so far. Though I do think, in my case, I may need to upgrade my hardware. For whatever reason (most likely something to do with Linux being my preferred OS), I have some issues with refresh rate and intermittent issues with 4K 60fps playback. Or those just may be my excuses to update my system:P I think my CPU is probably fine (Intel 5820k), but I feel it's past time to move on from the GTX 970. I've got a new build all planned out, so hopefully in a few months I'll have all that worked out. Good idea for a video, dude. Thanks!
@TechGuyCharlie
@TechGuyCharlie 3 года назад
Thank you 😊 and a lot of 'experts' recommended against using a 'TV' as a computer monitor, people come up with silly excuses like input lag and blurry text but I haven't experienced any of those issues and this has by far been the best addition to my setup, nothing beats the experience of big screen, plus since its a smart TV, you can watch Netflix and RU-vid without turning on the PC. GTX 970 should be able to decode 4K 60 fps videos, I am wondering if its the Nvidia driver issue on Linux.
@ritual301
@ritual301 3 года назад
@@TechGuyCharlie Yeah, I would think that the 970 would be able to handle 4K/60, but it definitely struggles with RU-vid content that uses VP9 codec, and other 4K media that pushes beyond 100Mbs. It's not a problem that _always_ occurs, but it occurs enough for me to get slightly annoyed, lol. I am running current drivers, and I don't think that would be it. But, I mean...maybe?? Lol. I love Linux, but it doesn't come without it's quirks. It's all good, all things considered. I also have been super happy with the TV and agree with you 100%. I'm not a gamer, so I honestly can't speak for things like not having

Thank you Alain, moving from a monitor to a TV was the best thing I did, there is a lot more flexibility with a TV! By the way, the size of the TV depends on your viewing distance, make sure you have enough distance between the TV monitor and yourself, I maintain about 125-130cms between myself and the TV, which is very comfortable.

Hi Charlie. Awesome video!! I am not sure if I should buy a 1080p tv or a 4k tv. Would the text and sharpness of a 1080 tv be the same as a 4k tv if using as a computer monitor? I am not getting 4k signal and will use tv for browsing internet and computer work. Thank you very much!!
@TechGuyCharlie
@TechGuyCharlie 3 года назад
Thank you and let me try and answer, 1. 4K TV will be much sharper than any 1080p TV, if you are comparing the similar size TVs then the pixels are packed much more densely on a 4K display, giving greater sharpness, which is very noticeable while looking at text. 2. A computer will ALWAYS put out 4K signal no matter what you do, web browsing, word processing and gaming, provided you have a graphics card released in the last 4-5 years, or a new laptop. And not to mention a 4K TV will be more future proof, 1080p TVs are on their way out and for anyone buying a new TV above 32inches, I recommend going with a 4K TV.

Superb video. Is there any problem running your games in 1080p since it's scalable with 4k?

Thanks, btw I always play games at 4K with the PC, although I have tried gaming with PS4 and the upscale quality is awesome, from a distance you cant even tell if its native 4K or upscaled 1080p.

Wait, is that a coffee mug in your PC case? Awesome tutorial. A few weeks ago I replaced my 34" monitor with a $169 TCL 43" 4k TV, since it's like the cheapest well reviewed TV that can do Chroma 4.4.4 subsampling. It's pretty awesome have such a big cheap screen. I did get really nauseous playing a CODMW level where you had to pan around a lot. I love VR and flying FPV drones, so I didn't think that would happen to me LOL!

That is indeed a coffee mug 😁 it was a gift from someone special, so I kept it inside the case, anyway 169$ for a 43" 4K TV is an epic STEAL!! you know, I just love the immersive view of a big screen while playing games, it feels as if you are actually in the game! A lot of people recommended against a TV as a PC monitor, saying the size would be too but, but a big screen is by far the best upgrade I've done to my setup, once you actually use it, there is no going back. 😊

Very nicely explained. What is the distance between your face(eyes) and this 50" display? I mean don't you have to move your head a lot to peek at anything but the center of the display when sitting at regular pc usage distance (which is usually 1 - 1.5 feet)
@TechGuyCharlie
@TechGuyCharlie 3 года назад
Thank you Ratul, the distance between the TV and my eyes is about 3 - 3.5 feet depending on the position of the chair and keyboard, I've upgraded to a 55' TV and it feels very comfortable, because of the distance, I don't have to move my head that much. Certainly less strain while working on documents and presentations compared to a 23' monitor.

Very good video. I have a question that I own a 1080p laptop which doesn't have graphics card. How would it reflect on to a 43inch 4k TV as. I want to use use TV as 4 split screens 21inch each. But I want the TV to have normal font and other elements size so that it doesn't occupy to much space and be comfortable. Please reply soon as I want to buy that in big billion sale
@TechGuyCharlie
@TechGuyCharlie 7 месяцев назад
Hey man, its very difficult to say without actually trying and testing, every laptop is different, some laptops can output proper 4k 60hz some cant. The size of elements can be easily adjusted from the display settings on Windows 11. 😊

I'm looking for a 4K TV as a PC monitor (with local dimming light/blacklight) under 50inch but I can't find one, do you have any recommendation? I can't find your LG or Samsung TV. Thanks!
