Can I put a 5R55E/ or or a 3.0 v-6 trans in place where a 4R44E was? , whats the draw-back? really appreciate your teaching! I know you tell us a lot, in the future can you make a lot more comments like that; {not you though I notice an increasing trend of other guys} on you tube not showing the actual performance of operations

This was a very informative video. Me and a friend of mine are hopefully about to rebuild the transmission in my 1997 Ford ranger soon. Although we've both been through several other transmissions, this will be a first on one of these.

It's interesting to watch you do your thing. I always bring my transmissions to the professional shops. Thank you for the video posting.

I know this is an older video. It is one of the best tear downs for thsi transmission. I rebuilt my 4r44e with a heavy duty rebuild kit off ebay. I am pretty sure sure I installed everything to spec, including the band adjustments. I burnt my 3rd gear playing to hard in the mud and over heated my tranny. All the gears worked, but in D, if I gave it much gas it would slip upon 3rd gear. But now D slips from the get go, as well as R. 1,2 work perfectly. What do you guy's think I did wrong?

Hi, I have a question, I have a 5r55e transmission, while driving, in 3rd gear you hear a clunk while its in gear (not shifting up or down) and my question is, what could be the problem? It used to also flare between 2&3 gear and 3&4 gear (it would rev engine up a little before shifting, about 100-200 RMPs) so I added Lucas transmission fix and that seemed to stop). But i still hear that clunk while in 3rd gear, it's not noticeable while accelerating slow, but if I accelerate fast it clunks) any ideas of what the problem could be? Thanks in advance

Question I have a ford ranger, AT, 2.3 that shifts very hard from 1st to 2nd, and also into 3rd but a little bit softer, do you think it need a total overhaul or can it be patched by replacing only the solenoids? and the gaskets?

Old video, but really great info. How about a 2000 4R44E that is silent in Park/Neutral, but in any gear selection it howls from trans and tiny creep in direction and thats all she gave, first impressions internally besides tranny is bad... thank you to anyones help?

Have you ever used Knipex Pliers? I noticed the ones you have would pinch your hands if you slip. The Knipex has the no pinch design. They’re a little more expensive but well worth it. Their Cobra pliers to replace the ones you were using and a pair of Pliers Wrench also. I swear you’ll love them!

Hi Hiram. I have a Ford Ranger 2009 2.3L. I took down the base pan of the Transmission. there's no Metal Shavings or blown gasket. But when i shift in Third gear 3th. My OD LIGHT Appears. Could it be a Bad SOLENOID OR SOMETHING ELSE?

First off you are one hell of an instructor. I never rebuilt a transmission until now and I've gotta say it. Where did this technology come from? This was not intended for automotive this had to have come from something far more advanced and developed in the 60's after seeing the valve train and check balls that control things simply by rate of flow and pressure. It's absolutely amazing. 1 question in a ranger 3.0 with 4r44e transm do I need both the internal radiator cooler plus an external radiator cooler? No this is the first time it's been opened ofcourse not, I knew from the start the lines weren't going to survive. Just wanna know if I can bypass or even eliminate the external cooler. It's only 6" H x 11"L x 1/2" W it can't be doing too much but dumping all my damn fluid when I'm aggressive having fun out in the middle of NO STORE FOR MILES!!! ITS ONLY HAPPENED TWICE🙄 . Enough that I now have a spare cooler and 4 gal at the cabin lol

I have a 4R55E in my '96 Explorer. Loss of reverse, unless you really rev ir....won't upshift from 1st till over 3,000 rpm. Going to attempt a rebuild with a new input speed sensor, new clutches & steels, o-rings seals, and gaskets, & was wondering If it's necessary to change all the bushings? Just hoping my rear needle bearing, and sprags are ok. Also putting in a shift kit.

Did that hold planet twist and sprag is also turning clock wise, basically turning both ways. Is this why I lost all gears?

I have a 2003 Ranger 3.O auto.I have a lot of fluid on the bottom of the pan. I had no leaks on the ground though until I raised the front of the truck today to do a routine brake job. I noticed there was a 4in circle of fluid now on the garage floor. I haven't cleaned anything up to start looking for leaks but I'm betting this is something you know about already LOL. What should I do now? There has been some hard shifts at higher RPMs but shifts pretty smooth overall. I'm currently disabled and this is my main vehicle to get me back and forth to my spine surgeon and physicals therapy....I'm getting ready for another surgery.....already have 12 bolts....3 are 5in....and 2, -9 inch rods. I wouldn't do the brake but I have to due to lack of funds. I have to do the other side of the brake job tomorrow. I sure hope this isn't something that's showing and exiting transmission. I don't know if I can handle it with no family anymore. Sorry for the fear rant....lol. Please let me know what I can do to diagnose deeper. Hiram Gutierrez i am sorry to bug you but need to know. I have 2 rangers 1 is a 95 with trans code T (4r44e) other is a 05 trans code D (5r55e). Is it possible to change the valve body and use the D in the 95? Keep in mind the 95 is a 3.0 and the 05 a 4.0 both auto 4x4. I have a complete truck smashed in the front and a near mint truck with a bad trans. trying not to spend cash if I don't have to. Or should i just gut the 95 and change everything from the 05 to it, computer and all?

I have a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT 2 wh drive 3.0 L 6 Cyl 2 wh drive, won't go in reverse. I changed the filter and put the pan back on, it was overfull, But now I can not get the dipstick to go back in, I turned it a million times but it won't go in, help any advise will be appreciated

Hiram, I posted in the wrong place. Trying again. I have a 7A034 tail bushing for a 4R44E Ford transmission that needs replacing. Instead of paying a billion dollars for a specialty tool, is there a way to get the old bushing out and a new one installed on the cheap. Like a bushing driver out of what size socket or something like that?

Hello I have a 4r44e and initially I had no reverse. Replaced Reverse band and several bearings and upon install I had all forward gears but weak reverse. On the lift it would engage and go into reverse but on the ground it would barely move the truck... Any ideas? I have tore it back down and reinspected and see no issues. Help Please!

Actually when you break it down the speed turbo sensor isn't that hard to get to. I'm breaking down my wife's transmission and the one that came with the truck. The drum is groove like a rotor would be the band is fried and I can see what they mean by when the overdrive goes and flips. I'd send pictures but I don't know if it go through

4r44e isn't a 55, and there are different versions of 44 identified by casting numbers... there was a 5r too. You can't swap between any of them, even the tcm and harness is different

Hello, great Video !! I got a 2004, Ford Ranger 3.0 V6 my transmission is locking up ! I can drive my truck and all the gears will shift un & down but if I go over 40 MPH I won't be able to stop with the trans in gear if I doo my engine will die . I can go in reverse or Neutral , no problem but if put it in drive kills the engine . the torque convertor and complete valve body with solenoids is being replace but with no luck . can you please HELP !!

Thanks excellent video. My 4r44e used to make a whinnying sound before it change gears. Then it start linking oil and stop working. What will cause this problem? I have never rebuild a transmission before, but after have the unit rebuild 3 time and it did not work correct, I am now considering rebuilding it myself. Thanks in advance.

Hiram help! Pete K here I posted about rebuilding my tranny after I saw your video. I have everything out, but the low/ reverse drum won't budge no matter how hard I try and pull. I noticed the one you did popped right out no problem. When I look inside it with a light, the back portion looks all bluish like it heated up. Any ideas I hope? PS, from your description I thought my manual start in 2, shifting to drive, was the overdrive sprag, but that feels fine when I turn it by hand. Could the low reverse drum, and the heated look be my problem. Thanks again. Another PS, doing outside today in 20 degree weather. Brrrrrrrrrrr.

I just assembled it and had a retaining clip & a bearing left over.. heh. no problem. I'll pull it apart & install the 2 pieces. Got my 99' Explorer for 300$ cause of a broken reverse band. Thing is immaculate otherwise. nice video.

Now, after 60 mls lost all of shift after came some oil from that ..... Any idea, pls? Another question is, how can I clean the valve without transmission remove, please? Hiram, I have one question, I have a 96 Explorer I'm building it is the 4R55E, I have seen many different takes on band adjustments. Tighten to 10 ft lbs and back off anywheres from 1 1/2 turns out to 2 1/2 out. What do you do for adjustmants?

Great presentation Hiram. My 97 Explorer trans crapped out. I had no movement in forward gears. I limped home in 4 WD. My vehicle has 155,000 on it. Good engine. I will look for another good explorer. Seems my Overdrive is screwed up as I got a whirring sound as I coasted to a stop.

good morning, what is your opinion? Can I change my transmission from an explorer 95 4WD to another from an explorer 4WD 97,98 99 or 2000? According to my mechanic, the only difference is the site for the starter, which is solved by cutting a bit of the starter core.

Ok have a question for you costumer brought a 87 bronco 2 2.9 a4ld with the 1350 trans case told me he was driving then all the sudden it just stopped would not up shift would no engage in any gear. So i told him i could rebuild or to save him some money i had an a4ld laying around from a 302 swap i done in my bronco. So we took that wrought put the trans in hooked everything up primed the torque converter before install and went to put in gear then nothing. I did use the old torque converter but checked the splines for the input and fluid was perfect so im kinda stuck at this point any ideas?

Help! 99 explorer 4x4 5r55e put into reverse and heard a loud boom. No reverse but all forward gears work fine and No flashing od. I think it's a broken reverse band. Could it be anything else causing it?

hello sir just tore down my 4r44e and found the pump washer was gone and the overdrive drum was rubbing against the pump. out of a 98 ranger 2wd 4cyl. any common problems that would cause that? thanks and great video.
