4Runner 2003-2009 - Stuck Rear Door? Reset ECU-B Module 

Lets get this video to 100k likes. A lot of people are dismantling their tailgate and trying to clean out the lock only to have to lockup again in a few months. This video is gold.

Just had my tail gate torn apart to install a back up camera put it all back together closed and of course it wouldn’t open again. Instant panic! Like efff…. What did I forget to plug in. Went to RU-vid found this video first and bam tail gate opened right up! On of the best videos ever!

Brilliant Mr. T4R Ninja! Glad I found your vid. Didn’t want to pull out the back panel, remove the vapor barrier, undo a bunch of nuts, grease the latch etc… unless absolutely necessary. Didn’t want to pull out the neg. terminal and reset everything inadvertently either, unless of course “necessary “. Not sure how the hatch switch shorted, maybe because the wife slammed the hatch down (I’ve told her it doesn’t need to be slammed millions of times) … that’s another story to be told another day. Wanted to say thanks. I tried your video and it re-set and worked-- one time, then it would not work. So I read further in your answer to a comment where you said try replacing the actuator in this situation. I did and now all works perfectly. By the way with your little 10 amp fuse trick, I did not have to disconnect the battery to safely replace the actuator as I just pulled the fuse before and reinserted afterwards.

I just installed a new rear door latch mechanism and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working. Then I stumbled upon this video and thought what the heck I’ll give it a try and Bam what do you know it worked like a dream! Whoohoo! Thanks , man. I drove to a jobsite yesterday (over some nasty washboard dirt roads), & when I got there my 4Runner's hatch wouldn't open. Hard NOPE. It certainly felt like a blown fuse, bad connection, chafed wife, or sudden (suspiciously sudden) death of the electric latch mechanism. Couldn't find a fuse listed specifically for the hatch latch. I was just in the process of gutting the latch circuit & thought: "Toyota has all sorts of weird cheat codes and lockouts built into their cars; maybe I should check online & see if there is a simple fix." Your video came up; worked perfectly! Thank you for saving me several hours of testing motors, switches, fuses, etc. BTW: There is a secret little manual release trick for the 2003-2009 4Runner hatch, a sort of Emergency Exit hack. I found it today while groping around for loose harnesses. This trick will let you open the hatch even if this ECU-B reset does not work. Pop off the 5x6" plastic access cover in the middle of the inside hatch panel. (Or pop off the entire panel: you can do it from the inside, tho it is awkward with the hatch shut.) pull down the plastic curtain liner and tuck it off to the side. There's a white plastic block right there in the bottom middle. That's the power latch module. It has a little white plastic blob attached to its left side (viewed from inside the vehicle.) Reach underneath that little blob and find a tiny lever; push up on it, and the hatch will open.🙂

Was working on the rear roll down window on my 05 4Runner limited, had the window track and motor assembly completely removed. Unplugged everything that was in my way, one being the harness for the door latch, got the window track fixed and reinstalled and then all of a sudden my rear door wouldn’t open. I’m very mechanically inclined and this had my head spinning trying to figure out why my door wasn’t working now………. THIS SAVED ME, Thank you so much!!!!

IN MY CASE THE ACTUATOR WAS DEAD, the light of the dash was showing me one of the door were open,, pulled out the fuse you showed us on the video,, did what you did and life is good now 🎉🎉🤝thanks

I thought I must of cut or broke a wire and would have to take it to the dealer , expecting thousands in repair costs. I panicked, I mean really panicked. Then saw your “life saving “ video. Dude you legend. I am sitting outside in the hot Texas heat with my lift gate fully dismantled and lock re-greased and it still wasn’t working (this did work once prior) Just pulled the fuse and now it works. Thank you!

Thanks for making this video. Had the rear glass in my 4runner replaced and the service tech noted the mechanism stopped working. I pulled the fuse and put it back in - didn’t work. But knowing it was a jam issue made me toggle the lock/unlock a couple times and that did it. Thanks again!

Thank you for this, I put a backup camera on my sons 2008 4Runner and all of a sudden the tailgate wouldn’t unlock. I did notice the rubber on the button was basically melted away so I replaced it and still couldn’t get it to unlatch. Following this video I had to resolved faster than switching out the button. And thank you Toyota for putting those fuse pullers in the box.

This 100% helped me diagnose my customers issue. Door opens and shuts fine after the reset. However I think his ECU-B is going bad since it will work for 2 minutes after resetting it then stop responding again.

Hell yeah my guy. Completed a full refurb on the rear hatch and unplugging the lock module from the ECU must've dropped it off the bus. Fixed right up.

I followed this hack, and it works. It saved me from lot of stress. Other videos go for the direct replacement of the actuator, which I did and then undo. I was looking for the fuse but no one know or can't find it online. The door handle could be a potential problem too since it has a motor. Thank you for this quick fix, I hope no major problems with the trunk for awhile.... Just subscribed in case more great idea come my way....
