Appreciate the honesty. All I see is people talked about OEM Audio and there is no way I'm going to spend that kind of money on an audio upgrade.lol. Thanks for doing a video for the average joes out here. Very helpful.
Just replaced my dash corner speakers with a "Subaru" tweeter upgrade from Kicker. Took 3:47 seconds from start to finish. Plug and play. NOTICEABLE improvement. Highly recommend!
I went with JL Audio C1 690 up front. And put the tweeters up front also to replace those stock ones. You will be so happy and very much surprised what those tweeters pick up alot of vocal and make it sound like if it was a soundstage in front of you.
A little late, but today I used your videos for instruction on upgrading the speakers on my 4runner. It sounds so much better, I will be adding a sub and amp later on if needed, thanks.
Hey Jon. Silent watcher of your vids, but I have to say thank you for your videos! They gave me the inspiration and courage to change out the front speakers myself to the same ones you have. I also sound dampened the front doors like you did. Big help, thanks again!
Ended up just doing a JL upgrade on my 4R with powered sub and powered door speakers. Amazing difference. Bit of a high upfront cost and debatable upgrade for most, but I'm happy.
I just installed the OEM audio set up and still using the stock head unit. It is super clear and loud. I do wish it had a little more bass but it’s much much better than the factory
The series was great! Had a 4runner 2010 for 12 years and loved everything about it EXCEPT the sound system. Just replaced my old truck with a brand new 2022 4runner. First thing I purchased was replacement speakers. Sounds amazing! I did sound treat the doors more than just behind the speakers and I don't regret it. I still can't believe the crappy speakers Toyota put in there. Isaw the video you did on how paper thin they are but holding them in my own hands was quite the surprise. They went straight to the trash, where they belong. Thanks for splitting the videos into specific topics. The whole process was quite easy, thanks to you.
You really have to get the entire kit ... 8 speakers, sub, and DSP/AMP ... it makes a huge difference and is NOT underpowered at that point IMO, using the stock head unit. It's worth the money.
Thanks for your time and efford with those videos, now im gonna do mine, i will put infinity kappa, and than the after market head unit, in thinking “Alpine-Halo” but i will wait until your DIY video for that!! Again thanks a lot for your videos!!
Nice video, disagree with your assessment of not wanting to do the rear speakers. 6.5" speakers are very close to the surface area and air movement of your front 6x9. Even though the speakers are physically further away from the driver seat, they still make a huge difference in audio quality. Unplug the rear speakers and drive around, you'll see the difference.
I’ve sat back there and can tell a difference now since making this video. I just wish I when with different speakers for the rear doors. I went to small.
Great series man. Glad to see some good DIY videos for the 5th gen that are not from audioplus or taco tunes. (Not that there is anything wrong) Great Work.
Just found out today that the Subaru Kicker upgraded tweeters are plug and play replacements for the 5th gen 4Runner dash tweeters. The part number is H631SFJ101... I've ordered these from Amazon and should be here next week. There are additional RU-vid videos showing the installation.
I didn't know that Entune has issues getting stuck. I've seen only after market headunits having issues getting stuck. I'm so glad non of my stock headunits had those issues. Thanks again for doing this. Shopping around to see what I can do with not so expensive amp and speakers. For sure I will be very careful with amps as in the past i've seen bad experience with my buddies Mazda 3 where he got installed an amp from CarToys and when music is not playing it gives a very annoying hissing sound. When he complained to CarToys they said thats how it is when you fix an Amp. Lucky for him a shop in Denver Lynx customs help him and fixed the problem. so lessons learned there 1 buy good product 2 go to a good shop.
Good job with the videos! It's really worth the 30 mins to put those tweeters in - the stock dash speakers are just horrendous. If you decide it's too bright you can always pull them back out very quickly but the clarity is so much worth it.
@@TRDJon you can probably just use spade connectors and jumper the connection at the dash speakers and not use anything at all in the dash as an option too. There has to be a connection at the dash as the dash / door speakers are run in parallel. The tweeters you got have a crossover built in so it's plug and play. Did you get a harness to go between the dash speakers and the stock plug? If not, you can use this spade connector attached to the end of each wire. It fits perfectly in the stock harness to bridge the connections. www.homedepot.com/p/Gardner-Bender-16-14-AWG-4-6-Stud-Spade-Terminal-Vinyl-Blue-10-Pack-15-113/205846650
@@TRDJon yeah there's actually 4 pins in the dash speaker connection. If you connect a spade connector to the ends of each wire then your + wire from the tweeter, the spade connector will plug into the light green and pink wire pins in the stock harness plug. This is the same for both driver and passenger side. The - wire from the tweeter, the spade connector from it blue and violet on driver's side and blue and yellow on passenger side.
There is a secret to re- installing those pesky 5th gen rear door panels!! 1. After snapping cables/harness back- put the key in and ROLL DOWN THE WINDOW 2. Be gentle believe it or not, force is not needed 3. Gently rest the panel on the top with panel hanging naturally (flat) then with one hand on the bottom of the panel, pulling the bottom away from the door (rocking it) till the top engages properly. It will even make a snapping sound when you get it into the track ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN MY FRIENDS!!
Great job on the video. I am like you and really dont want to get rid of the stock head unit. Will have to talk to my buddy more about the system he has planned for me.
@@TRDJon I installed Noico sound deadning for the inner and outer front and rear doors which made them bit heaver but I kind of like it though. Doors dont sound empty anymore) And installed Focal IS690TOY for the front with tweeters and focal IC165TOY for the rears. Will install the same ones for the rear hatch later. So far so good, defenetly improved sound quality. Clarity is good and Bass is more than enough for me, no need to install sub. I bet with amp it will give more power but for me it's good enough so far...
@@TRDJon they are good, plenty of bass from the fronts, readio is def less muddy, tweeters seems bit louder than stock ones. It really depends on what sourse you listening to but i did noticed with blutooth you do have to turn up the volume up close to 40-50 which not that big of a deal just something I have noticed. Will see how it will sound with rear hatch focal too. Will do the same sound deadning like you did in the hatch.
Just front speakers isn't gonna do it. The EQ in the stock head unit needs to be corrected with a DSP to get rid of the boomy mids no matter what speakers or Sub config you add. Best will be to get rid of the stick head unit, but if you are gonna keep it, maybe run a kicker key amp or an audio control amp between the head unit and the speakers. OR, just get the OEM Audio plus system and call it a day. As a long time yota guy (15 years) and with about 4 sequoias and 2 4runners build under my belt, the weakest link in the chain is the stock headunit, then get speakers, then Amp for speakers and a sub....if you do all that, you will be at about 2500...Or, just get the entire OEM Audio + setup and you're good.
If the stock head unit should be replaced, how is the OEM plus system better than buying individual component’s since it still utilizes the stock head unit? Genuinely curious because I am leaning towards the OEM plus system and then saw your comment about how the stock head unit should be replaced. I honestly do not know much about audio. Your feedback is appreciated!
The stock head unit isn't your problem. The bargain speakers and a lack of an amplifier are. I installed OEM Audio speakers in back lift door, rear doors and front dash tweets without the amp, sub or front door speakers. Honestly, I could have stopped right there. The difference was night and day.
Hi Jon, Thank you for al the material you post on your channel. I have a TRDoffroad 2019, and I need to upgrade my audio. Not looking into competition or stuff, but definitely a little more punch and loud. How are you feeling 1 year later with this set up? I visited a store in town, and they wanted just to add an Amp and woofer for $900, which seemed quite expensive right off the bat, but I dont know much about this subject. I do have a Stock head Unit Thanks again man!
Damn...didn’t even think to put that in there. I’d say 4.5 - 5 you really loose it when the stock speakers are turned up loud. Where these are still clear when turned up
Why upgrade? Isn’t the point of buying a 4Runner it’s reliability and having it last problem free for a long time? Why people feel the need to constantly having a $500 car payment is beyond me
You’re right the stock head unit is the weak link. I’ve never liked the functionality of aftermarket units. They cost a lot and the UI is always terrible... but they sound better. Tough spot.
Someone sponsor jon for an aftermarket head unit.. the stock one sux.. my 4runner only has 13k miles but my head unit shuts off randomly like if its older
😂 I just delt with the passenger rear door... 🫡 I told my wife. That door wasted 10 to 15 extra min of my life. Lol, it's the one thing that took me for a spin... Like 10 things have to be done right for it to go in 😂
