I have OCD and you didn’t disappoint me on this installation. I’m extremely picky on my installs and wouldn’t have did anything different than was made here. You installed all electrical, and antenna, connections exactly like I do. I even check for continuity on my antenna connections like you did here. I also plot my antenna SWR as well. I have never let anyone install any ham radio gear in any of my vehicles in the 25 years I’ve been a ham radio operator. Yes, I am that picky. I’ve worked, part time, in the two way radio industry a few years back and treated every antenna, and radio, install as if I was installing in my personal vehicle. This is saying a lot but, I would actually let you do an install for me if I was never capable of doing it myself. Good job.
Nice clean install. I have 2 of the same model radio. One is mounted in my vehicle. The other is mounted in a fat-50 ammo can with two 8aH AGM batteries. There's enough room for 25 feet of coax, a roll up j-pole antenna and a length of paracord to hoist it in to a tree. It's great for remote operating.
Great video. After my MOAB trip, I need to reroute all the wiring and cables for all of my Radio setups. Im over the top, I have HAM, FRS/GMRS, and CB in my 4Runner. Moab trip we used FRS/GMRS radios the entire time.
Look at the Cobra 75 for CB. Compact unit with everything in the mic. Works better then my hand held Cobra in the fact that it gets the signal out of the vehicle so you get good range for CB... a full football field LOL
Sure nice to see someone out there still knows haw to use a soldering iron. He does good work. I did my GMRS similar but need to get it tuned. Thats the one tool i dont have in my box for anything but CB. Nice clean install with a factory look as it should be.
I've seen many people go straight from the B+ through the firewall without a fuse. Don't do that. There are weatherproof fuses holders available to keep things from corroding.
Nice work. I really dig the coin tray mic connector! Curious why you didn’t run power from the accessory fuse block inside the passenger cabin. It’s right in front of the firewall penetration you made. Plenty of open, hot locations and your choice of bolts to ground to. No need for additional holes in the firewall. You can even choose ignition switched or always on.
A couple of reasons - less chance of interference, and a better wire for the amp draw of the radio. It's probably not strictly necessary, but it's not too bad running the extra wire!
@@RevereOverland Thanks for the reply. Excellent point about the amp draw. Hadn't thought of that. Heck, I don't even know what mine actually draws in the real world. I'm off to test!
I have a 2001 4Runner with the TYT9800. I'm getting RFI from the alternator. Any tips? My antenna is lip-mounted on the rear lift gate. Positive is directly to the battery. Negative is to the frame, similar to yours.
Just a FYI.... Nice work but why CAT? There was no need for such a hack mod for the mic. They make 6P6C phone cable(flat and round) with RJ12 connectors and also 6P6C RJ12 jacks that could have been used instead of CAT and not voided the radio mic's warranty. Just curious.
I wanted that particular plug for it since it looked good. Turns out the mic plugs into it without replacing the connector. It’s not as secure of a fit, but it works.
Did you add any extra coax cable from your antenna to your head-unit under the drivers seat? How much coax did you get? Also, what size fuse did you guys use for the radio in the fuse block? did I see 15?
@@RevereOverland btw, REALLY good tutorial. Best on youtube! Please consider doing a tutorial of how to wire some baja designs ditch lights! There isnt a decent tutorial on youtube.
Thanks! I actually have a video on Baja ditch lights half done. It was too difficult to video as I went since I was by myself, so I need to show what I did.
