Had bunch of these come in. Customers always think its going to need a trans or major overhaul. Drop pan and swap the tubes out in like 30-45 mins and customer back on road happy as a lark.
You are so right about the code 1810. When I foolishly swapped a 2003 Cavailer engine/transmission into a 2004, everthing was fine. However, when I then installed the 2004 engine/transmission into the 2003, I could not get rid of the 1810. Thank you for your video.
I first suspected those tubes. It happened to me no forward but reverse ok. When it happened to me I though it was a solenoid but after watching a few youtube videos realized it was the tubes. I couldn't do the job myself because it is winter and I don't have a garage, so ,I brought it (had it towed) to a shop who wanted to change the tranny .I said no brought it to another one same thing. Had to change the tranny , but it has been summer time , I would have change those tubes myself.
Hi Gary, I have a question. I removed the stub shafts in my 4T45-E transmission to replace the seals and cups. The RH side shaft came out with no problems using a slide hammer tool I made that grabs the groove for the spring clip. The LH side however was more difficult. It finally came out but the inner spring clip was broken in half. I could not find the other half of the clip. I tried using a magnet as well as a vacuum but could not find it. Do you think this piece of the clip will cause a problem in the transmission or will it eventually fall into the pan? I did drop the pan but it was not in there. I have not started the engine as I am going to replace the filter and oil. Thanks. Update: Transmission started making grinding noise this week 3/6/21. Took it apart and found differential planetary gears stripped. This is where the C clip broke off from the LH drive shaft when I pulled it out. Not good!!
good day unfortunately I do not speak your language sufficiently for communication .. because I am writing through a Google translator Let me ask you a few questions. I have saturn wue. AQPP 4t45, while the gas is being added, the car does not accelerate fast enough .. can you tell me what it is preparing for? and the second question ... what's the difference between 4t45e and 4t40? with respect Alexey
Maybe you can help me out....I have a 4T45E Trans in a 2006 Cobalt..... on the TCC Lockup Solenoid that goes in the Valve Body When I took mine off the inside went flying..now I'm not sure if that little spring goes in the middle then that little shaft..or the little spring goes in the Valve body 1st then the shaft, then the sensor...Any help would really be appreciated..Is it Solenoid... then Spring.... then little shaft.. .or is it Solenoid.... then Shaft...then spring....Thanks for any help Jim
Funny thing is, one time I did repair the tubes and 2 weeks later came back with an input speed sensor code so it ended up needing overhaul anyway. Go figure. Thanks for watching
Hey Guy how you doing I have a 1999 Chevy Malibu 3.1L V6 with a 4t-40-E that was rebuilt once back in 2010 should I do a fluid change or a flush? I have no shifter issue everything seems fine also what additive should I use along with fluid? I'm going to be using full synthetic fluid by the way recommended by the dealer Dexron 6
Very insightful video, lost reverse all of a sudden after the car was towed. was thinking id have to rebuild it but those tubes being broken can cause that too? The car had a blowout in the rear so naturally they sent a spatula truck and towed it all the way home hooked from the rear! Could that have damaged internal components and caused reverse to fail? Shifts through all 4 forward gears fine, and the TCC engages like it should.
my 97 malibu 3.1 v6 has this transmission and I have a tech 2 tool showing a TCC enable sol fault and not showing any codes not enabling in 4th gear??? Do you know what could cause this?
Apparently you have to be under the correct body selection in the tech 2 tool, I was under W which is the 4t60E and mine is the N body 4t40 E and everything is fine under that, thanks for the reply, any way you can make a video assembling one of these?
I have a 4T45-e and its delaying shift and making a thud while shifting into 2nd, do you think its lack of pressure due to a crack possibly in the tubes? Hate to go through the whole thing just to be a tube.
@@GaryFerraro just realized the traction control light comes on and then it shifts way worse. on these saturn aura / malibu it seems to be a somewhat common connection. It takes off ok, drives fine more or less until that traction control light comes on. I dont have a solus or a tech 2 to read the trans codes unless there is a way to get them with a standard obd2, I know some cars will pass them along into the main ECU. What do you think I should check?
Most transmissions may not have a tag, there is an app you can down load for free by a company called Transtec, they have a chart to I.D transmission type, or call the dealer with the vin number.
You have to knock them out, i use a screw driver to get them out and a small bushing driver with handle to knock them in, if they look ok, you could also just leave them in. Hope all is well wayne, shop is pretty packed
2007 Chevy HHR. Transmission isn't catching gear when I get off the freeway (at a green light) and accelerate after making the turn. Now it's not catching gear when taking off from a red light. Do you think it's the tubes? It's super frustrating because it's already been rebuilt twice within 3,000 miles, and last time the rebuilder said they replaced all the internal parts.
@@GaryFerraro Yes, it doesn't move forward, the engine just revs. It eventually catches in first gear (I think, it might be second.) The fluid level was checked on Thursday and supposedly it's fine.
@@Bigmikepolzien If it moves forward may not be the tubes, usually when they break it will not move at all. reverse is ok? wondering if this is in limp mode, when it is it will take off heavy from a stop
@@GaryFerraro Yeah, reverse is fine. It was driving fine on the freeway, then out of nowhere, the rpms started jumping around, I slowed down and it went back to normal, then when I excited the freeway, that's when I had problems with it "neutralizing." (That's the term the shop that rebuilt it used, but they cant seem to figure out the cause of it.)
I have a 06 pontiac g6, that had been bang shifting for a year, only sometimes though. So that led to people trying to diagnose an issue just based on my description, as when they would drive it it would shift smoothly. Then yesterday parked it at work just to run in quickly, left it running, tried to leave, but no reverse, never felt even try. I still drove it for the next few hours running errands. Its parked at home now and while in reverse there is now ticking, nuetral too I believe but not in any forward gears. Please help or point us some where. I would love to exchange emails or let my husband pick your brain by phone. We are desperate and broke
carol woodruff same thing happened to me. 2008 Chevy Malibu 4t40e, which has same transmission. Finally pulled it out yesterday and disassembled. Found out the sun gears were destroyed. Hope it helps.
Gary, great video - thanks! I have ''09 Malibu with 2.4L/4T45E with over 195,000 mi. The transmission is "missing" 2nd gear in "D", it goes 1-3-4: to high RPMs in 1st and then in 3rd (in "I" it goes from 1st to 2nd as expected). To rule out TCM issues, I did a test drive with OBD2 scanner connected: the TCM commands 2nd gear but the gear ratio stays as in 1st until TCM commands 3rd gear then the ratio jumps to 1:1 (3rd). Overall, it looks like a common issues with missing 2nd gear in 4L60E (atracom.blob.core.windows.net/manuals/individual/2013/2013-038.pdf). So I suspected that pressure was off and too much signal oil was entering 1-2 solenoid and was holding 1-2 shift valve until 2-3 opens and oil is routed to the spring end of 1-2 valve. Without removing the transmission from the car, I replaced Pressure Control Solenoid, and both 1-2 and 2-3 solenoids, but it made no difference: still missing 2nd gear in "D". The 2nd gear still work fine when driving in "I". I don't understand how the oil flow changes when driving in "I" vs "D", so I have hard time identifying the root cause. Do you have any idea what can be wrong or what other tests can be done? As a side note, when changing solenoids, I changed oil and filter: oil was fine and there was little accumulation on the pan magnet. Also there is no any fault code.
In 2nd, the 2nd clutch is applied and the 2nd sprag is holding. This is not common, haven't really seen this problem, could be a stuck shift valve, or bad sprag.
@@GaryFerraro Gary, I was thinking about stuck valve too, but I don't understand why would a valve be stuck when driving in "D" and would work properly when driving in "I"? Or is transmission works so differently in "I", that stuck valve would not matter? I have similar question about your the bad sprag idea. Any thoughts?
Can you just remove the valve body assembly with out pulling the pump off? Just looking to swap out the chain set gears without doing a full rebuild! 😄
@@GaryFerraro no I want to change the gears to change my final drive ratio from a 3.05 to a 3.63 by changing from 35/35 tooth sprockets to 32/38 tooth sprockets. Just trying to do it simple as possible! Lol
great video Mr.Gary. plz I need 722.3 transmission teardown and reassemble videos . I search but I didn't find it. can u plz send me the link for treason and rebuild videos. thanks
There is a company in miami that has a CD that is downloadable to a PDF file on this unit, its says it covers diassembly and reassembly. The company is ATSG(Automatic Transmission Service Group) You could probably purchase online and download it.
Hey Ivan, i guess i did not show the springs, sorry. Will keep that in mind for the next teardown, recently did a teardown on one of these, maybe i show the springs in that video
@@GaryFerraro i took a valve body cover off mine and as i stated to separate it from the case i noticed a bullet shaped object fall out it got groves in the side and ashot needle at the end of it !!!! any idea what it might be ?
