Here I share some DIY vehicle drawer ideas from my own 4X4 storage drawer build. I decided on these ideas based on a lot of research and they can be incorporated into drawers to suit a 4wd, van, camper or any other similar vehicle where easy storage is needed for camping or traveling on the road.
If this video has helped you and you'd like to show your appreciation you can buy me a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/LoveOfVideo as a thank you, it really helps me to make videos like this and supports the channel. Thank you!

Absolutely brilliant, love the battery system, the battery monitor in front is a good idea. They say that if 1 idea does 2 jobs it's a success, table and lunch maker, solid idea works well. Thanks for the great idea about the high density poly, have ordered already. Please keep going with your ideas.

Another upside of the slides is the weight saving. Also, threaded inserts work better than T nuts

Very handy little things those tee nuts. I'm going to install some more tee nuts around the edges for extra tie down points too. That way they're easy to unbolt and remove if needed.

Totally agree low friction slides over ball bearing rails. Have a Disco 3 and 2015 made a draw system very similar. Plastic slides double sided taped down, very thin. I also added a metal bar between the mount points across the car and routed a slot in the base board to spread the load of the unit forward/rear. Fitting eye bolts to mounting points and throwing a ratchet strap over the whole lot meant I secured the whole system to the car using legal and third party equipment. The coppers can get you for unsecured load you dont use certified equipment. Left the wood uncovered but hit it with polyurethane so spills and dirt was easily cleaned and I could maximise space. The draw system was so precise the draw pulls were routed holes in each draw and they needed to be there or opening a draw would create a vacuum suction holding it closed. Was running a big battery with inverter for (coffee machine) that was my only miss-step, the battery needed more cooling then I allowed for. After 18,000 klm including the telegraph track and gunshot the only problem was the battery needed replacing. Love your work and the table is so cool.
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 Год назад
Sounds like a really well thought out setup, and I like the idea of the metal bar support. I've come across the vacuum issue before, where the drawers are hard to pull out and push in quickly because the air gets trapped. I cut away the top side edges of my drawers to negate this problem, with the bonus being it makes it easier to reach in under the table and fridge when they're out and grab things from the side of drawer.

Great setup. There could have been an opportunity for an idea I am yet to use myself but could work on your left drawer. The idea is when there is a seperate area behind the drawer (in this case the battery compartment) you could extend the drawer sides into that area, without losing a heap of volume. You would end up with a timber drawer that can be extended all the way out.

Thats a really good idea, I wish I had of thought of it when I built them! Will keep in mind for any future drawer builds.

Thank you, this is really great. Been working on designs for a long time and trying to figure out how to use my folding camping table as a pull out table. Currently have it as a "false top" on my drawer, but I like your idea better with its own compartment. Question: Do you like those drawer latches? If so, can you share a link? No worries if not, thanks again!
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 Год назад
I like the drawer latches, the main reason I bought them is because you can easily adjust where the latch itself sits, so you can adjust the tension easily. Admittedly the spring loaded handle latches are nicer to use, but I think getting the right amount of tension so the drawer doesn't move back and forth when closed could be tricky. I just bought my latches from Bunnings... www.bunnings.com.au/goliath-stainless-steel-key-lockable-drop-t-lock_p4230017

Great video - thank you. That's given me some inspiration for my LR4 storage. Love the idea of the t-nuts. Out of interest, what is the grey covering on the plywood? Gives it a good finish.
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 Год назад
The grey covering is just Matpro carpet from Bunnings, comes in a 3x1m roll which was just enough to do these drawers. Cost was about $60. It's not as thick as marine carpet and is really nice to work with, especially where there are tight bends or folds. The internal plywood walls of the drawers etc. is just grey spray paint.

Excellent idea with the table as we have 2 of these just in storage most of the time. Your complete idea will go into the tray of my Dmax once the canopy is installed. Is the aluminium strip recessed or just screwed over the carpet?
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 Год назад
Hi Richard, glad you liked the table idea, and thanks for the coffee! The aluminium strip is just screwed down over the carpet using small countersunk screws. Gives it a more finished look I reckon compared to having just carpet.

Locks are perhaps not necessary, I don't lock them often but handy to have in those instances where you want somewhere secure to lock certain items up.

Drawers are looking great. Did you recess the plastic strips and what thickness ply was used for the drawers?
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 2 года назад
Thank you 👍 . I used a trim router to recess one side of the plastic slides just enough to get a snug fit, but still with enough clearance to slide nicely I.e. not too tight. I used 12mm ply for the drawers, except for the very top which is 19mm for extra strength, as 12mm would sag across the large table slot when the tables out and there's a bit of weight on top (learnt from previous setup).

I'm looking at doing a set of drawers in a canopy similar to this with hdpe or uhmw slides. I'm currently stuck on how much of a gap I need to leave between drawers for a Snug fit with carpet and I I'm struggling to find something to use as a lock strike for the push to close or slam locks. Do you have a drawing or parts list for this build? It would be awesome to reference

@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 5 месяцев назад
Just carpet from Bunnings. Pretty sure it was the Matpro 1 X 3m roll you can buy off the shelf. Really easy to work with, as it's not too thick, and not expensive either.

@rogerhewison8914
@rogerhewison8914 Год назад
Sorry to be a pest, but I don't know if you have thought about this, you really should get a patent for what you have done. If you have a Prado then this will fit all prado's as a kit form the same design could also be made for Landcruiser & Patrol. Using all the same components. Take a photo in your mind.
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 Год назад
Honestly hadn't given that a thought, but a patent could be a good idea, as once the design is put on paper it would be relatively easy to build as a kit.

@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 10 месяцев назад
12mm normal ply for all of it, except the top which is 19mm for extra strength across the void the table leaves when it's removed. Last setup had 12mm ply for the top and it sagged eventually with a load on top and table removed.

Too add, to my comment. Do you plans for the electrical aspect
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 2 года назад
I don't have any plans showing how I installed the electrical stuff. In short, it's a DC/DC Charger, which does alternator and solar charging. Wired to a 100aH battery. Powers fridge and 12v sockets (rear of drawers) as well as inverter (back left corner of electrical compartment), and it powers a USB charger and voltmeter in the dash of the car. Includes fuse box, earth bus bar and thermal trip circuit breakers too, all inside electrical compartment.

I have one question, what stops the drawers from sliding all the way out?
@fortheloveofvideo6306
@fortheloveofvideo6306 Год назад
At the 0:15 mark in the video you can see a small piece of plywood screwed to the inside top of the drawer cavities. That'swhat stops the drawers sliding out all the way. The top of the back part of the drawers are cut out so that the drawers can be angled to get them in, but once sitting flat the back of the drawers will hit the plywood, hence they don't slide out. Short answer is a small piece of plywood, very low tech 😅
@callingrantham2553
@callingrantham2553 Год назад
@@fortheloveofvideo6306 low tech but very logical and neat. Thanks for the response.
