Well mate, that is the best drawer vid on the net. Well done. I approached Drifta for a set of drawers, but incorporating my own upright water tank at the rear. Unfortunately they could not accommodate, so I built my own similar to yours. What I learnt: 1. I used a sheet of 3mm HDPE that I cut. It was too thin. I screwed it in as I was not sure an adhesive would hold over time. As it was thin it slightly bowed. I also made the strips too wide @50mm. Your width looks good. Mine still slide OK, especially with silicon spray. 2. I remove it between trips. It is awkward and heavy to install/remove. 3. Nutserts can work loose when you are installing bolts. 4. Even expensive ply will bow. 5. Drawers are a bit overrated. I will re-design with one drawer, mesh shelving and tubs. 6. The Waeco dual fridge slides weigh a ton. 7. Price came in at about $1k including water tank. 8. Don't leave rear floor seat bolts unplugged...... Again...great job. Regards, Nick

a trick i learned from a guy that builds subwoofer enclosures is lay your carpet out in the sun for about 45 minutes to an hour to let the carpet "relax" then it'll be easier to work with and you dont have to fight creases and folds, and on cold days a quick going over with a heat gun or a good hot hair dryer works a treat for making carpet more manageable, never tried it myself with anything other than replacing seat covers, great vid and an awesome solution to a problem, i'm thinking about working with a friend of mine to build a set of drawers for a '91 jeep XJ that i'm about to do a repower on

Great drawers mate, will try build a similar set for the back of my car! Btw, the surface area doesn't come into play when calculating the force required to push the drawers, Friction force = (friction coefficient of the material) X (downward force or mass of object) You're saving money on materials by dividing it up into two strips but not halfing the force required to push the slides

big fan of your videos...but why even mention DRIFTA? As if Aussie manufacturing isn't doing it tough enough.. When the owner/manufacturer of locally made gear isn't willing to give up their materials or IP you publicly say they 'weren't willing to help' - of course not, its their business, theirs and their employees livelihood. And then produce 'How to Build your own DRIFTA drawers' ..again, why even mention their brand?? This stuff does damage, whether you think it does or not. I proudly work for an Aus manufacturer and deal with it all the time.
@Australian4x4Adventures
@Australian4x4Adventures 3 года назад
Not my intention to hurt them at all. In fact I think they should be chuffed that ppl want to copy their design. When I say they didn’t want to help I meant that they didn’t want to sell me the Teflon slides. That’s all. I never asked them for ddetails on how to build their drawers or anything else. I just wanted to buy the slides from them because I have all the machines and know how to build my own Ppl who watch this video would of been willing to make their own anyway and would never have bought pre made drawers so I don’t think I am taking business away from them. And the ones that watch it who can’t make their own now know that drifta make a great drawer very much like my own. Definitely not trying to hurt drifta, I think they are a great company. But some of us want to make our own stuff that’s all.

Well done. You can only imagine what Drifta would have charged you for that set up. Telflon is overkill for drawer slides. You could have saved yourself a motza by using UHMWPE which is specifically designed for use as wear strips. Much cheaper and works just as well. I have always wondered if Drifta actually use real Teflon (PTFE) based on the price. Most people see non stick plastic and just assume teflon ( i am in the plastics industry). I made my own drawers using UHMWPE runners and, as you have demonstrated, there is a bit of time involved but it certainly isn't that hard. And better still, you get a result which can incorporate innovative design features that would be very difficult and expensive to get from a manufacturer.
@Australian4x4Adventures
@Australian4x4Adventures 3 года назад
Yeah I looked into the other types of plastic and was told it’s heaps cheaper. But wanted to try and replicate drifta as closely as I could so went with real Teflon. Yes bloody expensive stuff. Having said that they glide sooo nice.
@timphoto83ec
@timphoto83ec 3 года назад
Mustafa , if your in the industry then you know why UHMWPE is a better choice than PTFE even if it was the same price. I think many just say "teflon" because people then understand even if they are using something else.
@timphoto83ec

Great video but one big warning, don’t rely on screws in your fridge slides. They need to be bolted with lock tight. They work fine in a kitchen but not in a fourby on corrugations and rough tracks. I used T nuts in the sides with a wafer head bolt through the track. If you don’t bolt and glue everything the runner screws eventually come loose and jamb up in the runner either making it impossible to open or worse close the drawer (ask me how I know, and yes I’m also a cabinet maker) I had to grind off one runner so I could close my back door. 😡🤬🤬🤬

Bloody brilliant job. Considering you hand cut all the components, it actually fit better then half the ones I have seen come out of Drifta and they CNC cut their components. Probably saved yourself around 3k and months of wait time.

The big thing i found making my own draws was not the skimp on the quality of ply. I had basic construction ply (12 mm) twist a bit which was a pain. It was OK for the base though. As for slides, yep used yellow tongue from Bunnings (its real cheap)
@benpaganin8354
@benpaganin8354 3 года назад
Was thinking of using that yellow tongue stuff. Is it any good for drawers?
@ShaneB666
@ShaneB666 3 года назад
@@benpaganin8354 yes, l used a bit on the base and then a bit of the draw so it slides on top of each other. Just router it down into the timber a few mm and screwed it on.
@Australian4x4Adventures
@Australian4x4Adventures 3 года назад
If you know how to join it properly you can get away with 12mm but it is much harder to work with for sure. I used 15mm for the top and bottom for strength and 12mm for everything else. Build it the right way and you can get the twist out of the sheets and hold it square But using 15-18mm ply would be heaps easier for someone who doesn’t know how to work with twisted sheets.

Hi mate, great build. Just wondering, when you pull the drawers approx halfway out and the weight balance is unsupported at the front, do they start to tip down a few mm and the back edges catch on the roof? Building my own drawers atm and unsure if this will become an issue. cheers
@Australian4x4Adventures
@Australian4x4Adventures 2 года назад
Hey mate. Yes that’s exactly what happens. That why the gap needs to be nice and tight 5-6mm so the further it comes out the more pressure it puts in the roof of the drawers holding it in place.

Hi Steve, I can see that every time you cut a piece of ply then you run the router over the edge. What is this for and which router bit do you use?
@Australian4x4Adventures
@Australian4x4Adventures 3 года назад
I only ran the router of edges that would be seen later on. It was only to take the sharpness out of the edge and to help prevent damage later on as well. A curved edge is stronger then a square one. It was just a little 5mm pencil round bit. Nothing special.
