4WD trip preparation is very important for any destination, and particularly 4WD trip preparation for the Victorian High Country.
It's very easy to get into trouble if you don't put some serious trip preparation into where you are going.
Camping and 4WD trip preparation tips are advisable when planning your 4WD trip into the Victorian High Country around the weather incase of bush fires, and floods.
Also gain as much information about the 4WD tracks you are planning to drive.
Safety is key with any 4WD trip preparation, but even more so in the Victorian High Country.
The weather down here can change very quickly at any time of year, and sometimes without any notice.
Make sure your 4WD is well set up for the steep country that you plan to drive.
4WD trip preparation is half of the fun, when planning out the area you want to explore.
Have everyone thats coming on the 4WD trip, involved with the planning and preparation of the itinerary.

Another great vid Tim. I reckon knowing know how to read a weather map is also an asset. Like contour lines on a map for gradients it will tell you if there is likely to be strong winds and the direction of the wind. Also knowing what high and low pressure systems mean all help to choose where to go or conversely areas to avoid. It will also give you more information further out from the forecast if you are staying a while out of reception range.

Some great tips. A PLB will cost you around $40 a year over its 10 year life... cheap insurance. All my hiking and 4WD maps are laminated. When you need to look at a map, it's often when the weather is bad. An unprotected map may not even last one trip in those situations.
@timbates4wdadventures

Good info bud, i go into the high country hunting, that weather can change at the drop of a hat for sure, i carry a plb its the first bit of kit in the bag, about a year ago i purchased a garmin inreach explorer se cus generally no phone reception in high country victoria, it is a game changer for comms in remote areas. It combines gps mapping and IRIDIUM satellite worldwide coverage for text and email as well as interval tracking at a pre set rate in csse you cant hit the button people at home know for position, i pay $25 a month for the plan and about 10 free texts tracking is about 2c a ping , you can get detsiled weather reports , which ss saved my ass a couple of times up there $ value is around $650 , my hunting mates carry em and you can comunicate with free 3x pre set messages ie (ok) (back at camp) ( need help) type of messages pre set before you leave normal reception well worth s look if you require more than a plb for when you need help, you the beauty of this system is that for the months you dont use it you suspend the plan , thx tim

That's a good little setup young felah,l have decommissioned my old 4x4 and in still in the process of kitting inside my landrover,l have got the digital rooftop maps on my laptop so l don't carry paper maps. I thinking about putting chainsaw on roof but my arthritis starting to kick in this year. Saying that you can get a battery operated Jerry can syphoner on ebay so l going to invest in one so l don't have to lift. I like your draw setup,is that where you keep your wallet at night.
@timbates4wdadventures
@timbates4wdadventures 4 года назад
G'day Greg, Some good tips in your list. The battery syphoner sounds a great idea. The jerry cans are heavy to lift when they are full. Digital maps would be a great idea, rather than carrying around all of those paper maps. But if you digital maps fail, then you have no back up to see where you are going. Good idea to carry both. Thanks heaps for your reply and feed back mate, greatly appreciate it. Cheers Tim.
