Printable template:
It's already scaled for printing on 8.5"x11" paper, so there are two halves. Just print them both out, overlap them, and tape them together. If you do have scaling problems, just be sure to maintain the 3.625" dimension for the post-hole. This design will accommodate most 7" plastic pots, but sizing may vary; there's still room to make mild adjustments by reducing or increasing the size of the pot-hole diameter. Assuming 3/4" plywood material, you have strength to spare.

About my pattern:
It was made from 0.19" aluminum trim coil. Coil can be cut to extremely high tolerances, and it is ideal for pencil-tracing. As a pattern, it keeps its shape well, and it's easy to store. Handy stuff. I buy trim coil in a 2'x50' roll, but if you know a contractor, they will likely have some scraps sitting around for you. Note: typical fascia is thicker material than the average coil stock, and so it's harder to shape. Expect a future video about break work.
I also applied spray adhesive to one side of the pattern for friction- not enough to make it stick, just enough to prevent sliding while tracing. Remember, saved seconds add up: it's not overboard to make a good pattern for a project that you intend to batch out, or for one that you expect to make again someday.
Title:
As for the not-too-tasteful alliterative pun, excuse it. But I fear that it will go largely unnoticed by a mass constrained by its historical ignorance, so I've allowed it to remain as a piece of pointed satirical commentary; if you don't know who the monstrous Pol Pot was (the once leader of the genocidal Khmer Rouge), then consider yourself to be the butt of my tragic joke. We might do well to mind our place in the great context: the gravity of our cultural centrality is an illusory one, as it affects only those caught in its tiny well. We, the present victims of localized "terror," oft forget the pains of the past, many of which pale our present discomforts- except that they no longer freshly resonate in our minds and ears.
On a much lighter note, here's another egg for you description readers: v=TDBE9wD7nMQ
More of a gem, really. If you want to investigate it, just place this code into the address bar at the top of your screen, right after the place where it says 'watch?' (and don't add any spaces).

bravo, one of those "why didn't I think of that?" moments for me. I might produce a mess o them next spring. Maybe half lap the curved bit, round the ends of the lap and run a pivot through it so it hinges open, then maybe a pin through a similar arrangement in the back? I mostly work with solid wood, so that might not be ideal for ply, but it gets me thinking.

I made those with a dremel tool (don't have any better but it worked) but made them 5 shaped (the open square goes around the column, the open circle around the pot). Thanks for inspiration! :)
@pocket83

How do they work? I considered doing that. I was worried it would be disastrous in the comments, so I took the cautious route.
@cprn.
@cprn. 7 лет назад
I made simple cutouts with sanded edges and several layers of transparent varnish. The idea of biting under pressure is exactly the same (the square part "hugs" the pole on three surfaces and can be easily taken off by moving to the side). They work great and I didn't had to do the joints so win-win, I think.

Hi Pocket. I was thinking that since your project looks so much like a can tab that you should make something that looks like a can to go underneath it. I was thinking maybe a larger ground planter or a trashcan to look like a soda can. A nice looking trashcan would be great in the backyard for those times you have family gatherings and if it looks like a can and fits around a pole and looks great people wouldn't mind having it close by like a cheap plastic trash can.

Very cool idea. But you can make it from one piece of plywood, if you do it without one of the sides of the square hole. Then it looks like a hook.
@pocket83
@pocket83 7 лет назад
I tested that idea during prototyping. Far too weak, and far too easy to dislodge. In order to change the geometry to make it work, it would lose too much aesthetically. But maybe a "gate" could be made that way, so that it slides on and then latches closed?
@PasiSavolainen
@PasiSavolainen 7 лет назад
Maybe just a wooden dowel through the rear? o.O There is of course the issue of closed ring for the pot, but it could also be open up to a third. Also the rear gate could be a sorts-of "shackle" that is put on "spurs".
@marka9292
@marka9292 7 лет назад
you could make that as one piece and instead of a closed square to ride on the 4x4 you could just leave one side open and use 2 screws to attach the last side after sliding it on the post.

@pocket83
@pocket83 4 года назад
It was a driveway reflector encased in wood. You'll have to cut away the plastic part of the white ring that attaches it to its stand, but after that I think it was just a press/friction fit. Use Cedar for its longevity and sculptural ease. Mine was Cypress. ... A close-up of it and a few other details can be seen near the end of this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iXKmL-UP9A4.html

Hey pocket. Have you tried to get into 3D printing or CNC or have some philosophy behind it using those? I think it is more fun to challenge yourself with doing it all by hand then taking 2 seconds to make this on a 3D printer
@pocket83
@pocket83 7 лет назад
I have no objections to using any tool. Use anything at your disposal. But- I presently have neither the space, nor the time. They've even offered to send me one a few times! Given the choice, I would take the 3D printer over a CNC; if I had one, I would print out many intricate geometric forms I think. I once saw a printed tesseract that made my mouth open a bit.

@felixdietzCGN
@felixdietzCGN 7 лет назад
neither 3D printing nor CNC machining are easy or done in "2 seconds" and you obviously didnt use both before. Its a different approach but stll challenging - try modeling an object, do the CAM and machine setup. This also takes certain skills and can be as hard to master as any other craft!
@BRETTVARG
@BRETTVARG 7 лет назад
Felix Dietz I am actually very proficient in 3D printing. Modeling for something such as his pot planter isn't very difficult to build actually. I could do it. I used 3D modeling software as a small source of income. The longest part about 3D modeling is the actual printing. Thanks for trying to shoot down my credibility of being a good source of information. Next time let's learn about the person who is speaking before actually attacking them. In a podcast I have I talk about 3D printing to my friend and describe how it works on software. So it wouldn't of been that hard to research my credibility since the podcast is linked to my RU-vid.
@felixdietzCGN
@felixdietzCGN 7 лет назад
BRETTVARG I'm sorry if this felt like an attack to you, this wasnt my intention. And yes, i presumed you didnt know about the topic because i heard those arguments many times by people who didnt knew what they were talking about. You are right, i could have checked your profile but didnt see the need to do so. Again - not meant as an attack more like food for thought. I could model this plant hanger in minutes, but only because I have a lot of experience. My first time drawing vectors and setting up machine paths for a cnc took hours - its in no way an easy task and i think i get a little pissed when some self-declared master of fine woodworking looks down on it. (not you, i meant in general). Sorry for the harsh words.

I have a question; why is it that you. Are the hole at the back so small and the second hole 'as deep as you can'? Also, why is the back hole larger than the front hole? Would to not make more sense to make both holes the same size and depth?
@pocket83
@pocket83 7 лет назад
The front and back holes are both the same: 3/8" wide and 3/8" deep. The center hole is 1/8" wide, but on ONE of the two parts, this hole is countersunk with a 3/8" bit so that a screw head will fit down into the hole.

That will never happen. The fact that I am less-than-tolerant of rudeness and stupidity ensures slow channel growth. This will always be a niche channel, and to be honest, I feel lucky and privileged that so many of you keep coming back. Not being patronizing there.
@VeteranVandal
@VeteranVandal 7 лет назад
pocket83 Well, I'm not sure. I honestly do not mind that youtubers stop reading comments as long as they stay true to their content, and have quality in mind when releasing content (I think this is actually something almost impossible of avoiding - of course I do not have your analytics...). I mean, I have NO idea how many comments you get per video, but I haven't seen many youtubers address communication with their audience well after hitting 10⁵ subscribers (this is not exactly the point at which they give up, but it is around this order of magnitude, from my empirical observations). While niche, for sure... I think no tolerance for rudeness and stupidity is might keep you safer. Because the internet in the best spot for rudeness and desinformation. I'll keep watching to see if your approach will work (and if you hit 10⁶ while STILL succeeding with your "way of dealing with the comments"), then I'll have to ask you how you do it, because I've never seen anyone succeeding, or at least not in a way I deemed satisfactory. Cheers.
@pocket83
@pocket83 7 лет назад
By percentage (and aside from the first day on a new video), very few of the comments actually make sense enough to warrant a serious reply, so it might be easier than you think to address a large volume of them. In fact, I find it a bit ostrich-like that so many 10⁵+ channels decline to participate. I have a moral objection to such self-preserving abstinence. I've posted some pretty fair comments on many medium-sized channels (never posed with ad-hominem or obscenity), and they usually always go ignored. Tactful neutrality? Nonsense. Grow some stones, and defend your content.
@VeteranVandal
@VeteranVandal 7 лет назад
pocket83 I don't think it is tactful. They just refrain from checking it. But if you are saying the percentages of comment per view are low... Well, you'll be safe for a little more time. Guess we'll see. I know some exceptions about comment responses, but they deal with it with the "collective" approach (which is not really a "great solution" as far as interaction with the community is taken into consideration): "A lot of you guys were saying this..." or "People are giving me a lot of hate by this..." or "It seems people are loving this type of videos, so I'm doing more of them". But I agree people should defend their content more. Some people apologize when they shouldn't. It is not like I'm directly giving you money, so you have to satisfy me (except those that have patreon or do think their sub base have some inherent value). Of course I know some youtubers that wouldn't be able to defend their content well, because they are doing content to please a big amount of people. I'm against that, honestly, but I see no problem doing it, even if I find that misguided.
