Back in the 1960s and 70s my dad was a mechanic and he had something called an air stealer. It was a hose with two connections on it so you could take air from the spare tire or another tire and fill one that was low. When he would go out on road calls for a breakdown the spare tire on the truck was overfilled for just such an occasion.

I'm still a little jumpy! As you saw, it certainly got my attention, I wasn't hamming it up for the camera at all, I needed a bit of a sit down to regain my composure. Though, I think the data was worth it. I would hate to say it's fine to pump them up to 150psi and have someone hurt, when it's not leaving enough safety margin.

i know I'm safe behind my laptop at home in the lounge room, but I still felt uncomfortable waiting for the tyre to explode.😁 Good to see there was no damage to the 4WD you were sheltering behind. Explaining the damage to the insurance company might have been a little tricky and they might have reported you to some kind of government terror squad. 😂💣💣 At least I now understand the limitations of my tyre pressure. I always worried when adding some extra pressure, but now I know it's nothing to worry about. Jack Absalom was a legend. I met his son once. RIP Jack.

I would like to add tanks, just like the LandCruiser, there's just no room, that's what led me to the idea of using tyres initially. If the valves can be made to flow well enough, it might just be work it. The Schrader valve has a strange external thread 8V1-32 from memory, so as soon as the tap arrives I can knock up a couple of adaptors and see if all of the work was worth it or not!

"The power of compressed air". Thats why tractor tyres have water in them and when they test aircraft tyres to failure, they fill them with water. A Boeing 747 tyre has enough explosive potential to kill anyone standing within 50m instantly. Compressed air is scary. Now the Yanks go on about a shrowder monster valve or something that flows more than a normal car valve. Feel free to correct me on that as I heard it at passing and did't really take too much notice of its name.
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing Год назад
You're right, any highly compressed gas holds a heap of potentially dangerous energy. I've seen a higher flow valve used by a couple of aftermarket mobs, though the standard tractor sized valve could be a great thing for 4WDs as converters are readily available if you have to pump up using a standard sized Schrader valve.
@liamcooper6721
@liamcooper6721 Год назад
@@LockyourHubs4WDing There would no doubt have been someone out there doing larger type valve conversions of tractors in the 4x4 world. Can't really say I've looked into it. I've been more focused on a plug and play setup that allows all 4 (5 or 6 if you tie the spares in) tyres to be inflated or deflated at once instead of doing each tyre one by one.
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing Год назад
@@liamcooper6721 I use a Jamec Pem Auto 1000 that's been converted to allow two tyres to be pumped up simultaneously. It works ok, but the hoses are constantly getting tangled! Two is bad enough, I can't imagine 4!

@liamcooper6721 Год назад
@@LockyourHubs4WDing hahah well its much the same because the way this is done. The Jeep boys put the ARB twin under the front seat and have 2 quick connects (1 on each side of the car) to plug the airline into which has a y splitter that then goes to each tyre. Hook in 4 tyres in one go for inflation or deflation.

Years ago I had a setup that inflated/deflated 4 tires at once, with a decent compressor it filled 4x 34 inch Simex Jungle Trekkers on an 80 series from 0psi to around 50psi in 4-5minutes. The idea was that with a decent compressor the valves were slowing down the inflation, it might be relevant here for the question at the end of the video? It would also be very interesting to see how quickly your nitrogen bottle could fill 4x muddies!👍
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing 3 года назад
I've found with a decent sized tank setup with 150psi in it, both the valve and the ARB digital inflator were slowing things down. To use them as airtanks, the Schrader valve will have to go.
@Wdeane1957

@@LockyourHubs4WDing would it be possible to adapt the fitting from a tyre deflator that removes the valve and have the "inlet" hose connect instead of the pressure gauge on it?
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing 3 года назад
@@Wdeane1957 I've looked at them and the insert that's used to remove the actual valve uses an o-ring to seal and looks like a potential point of leaks to me. I've got access to machine tools, so I think I'll knock up an adaptor.
@BenMitro
@BenMitro 3 года назад
What a brilliant idea and magnificent technical assessment. So dredging up the high school physics, given identical tyres and temperatures kept constant throughout the inflation/deflation procedure, one is used as a reservoir inflated to 90PSI, would that allow two tyres to be pumped from flat to 30 PSI? How long would it take to inflate the second of the two to 30 PSI assuming the first is inflated and presumably the spare starts at 60PSI? This is very pertinent to me, I am building a camper and very little room left for a tank in either the camper or the tug, but with two spares and 6 wheels in operation at any one time, this approach will be a game changer.
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing 3 года назад
The ultimate intention is being able to pump up the spare with a hard mounted air pump while still driving, so you stop to inflate with the spare fully pressurised. With your senario, on the second tyre, the pressure differential will be less and therefore it'll take longer. Though I want to keep the Zook's engine running and the air compressor continuously running. I'm going to have to custom machine an adaptor for the schrader valve stem to an air line that doesn't have any restriction, I can't find anything commercially available, it's a weird 8v1 32 thread.
@PhilTaylorPhotog
@PhilTaylorPhotog 3 года назад
I’d like to know a) what pressure it would get to if you start at 100PSI cold and sit it in the 45° heat for a few hours & b) whether there’s any regulatory concerns or insurance issues here. Don’t wanna be “that guy” but it’d be interesting to know.
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing 3 года назад
The resultant pressure would depend on a number of variables, including tyre size, tyre location (under the car in the shade, or exposed in the sun etc) and the starting temperature etc. Though most of those concerns aren't relevant for the use case senario here. Only the ability of the tyre's structural integrity to hold the pressure for a short period of time matters. The senario I would envisage is, you're heading out of the forest/beach and for a few minutes you're able to still drive and pump up the tyre using the on board air compressor. When you stop to pump up the deflated tyres, your tyre/air tank is to the set pressure and ready to go. As to regulatory and insurance requirements, that would depend on the jurisdiction and individuals insure's PDS.

Is the valve the weak point and if not, what is the Max pressure the standard rubber valve can take?
@LockyourHubs4WDing
@LockyourHubs4WDing 3 года назад
The tyre was the weak point, the rubber valve was ripped from the rim on the muddy and broke the steel valve in the passenger car tyre. Steel Schrader valves are used in applications of multiple thousand psi of pressure, while they might be a flow restriction, the strength isn't an issue.
